so after much waiting the GT finally came around. This year as you all probably know by now i took my Daemons:

Ku'Gath
Epidemus
5 Fiends (1 with S6)
7 PB's
6 PB's
6 PB's
6 PB's
Prince with MoN, Wings, 3+ Sv, Grenades, 2+ Poison and Gaze
Grinder with Pie Plate
Grinder with Pie Plate

So not the most optimum of Daemon lists but then it was there to show of my models and get painting nominations as much as do well.

GAME 1 - "BLAIRE" - MARINES - LOOT COUNTERS/PITCHED BATTLE

Rocked up to Table 1, yes Table 1 (Andy Smilie gave me Table 1 saying it was the only way i would ever get there....) to face the following:

Pedro
Lysander
9 Sternguard + Pod
5 Sternguard
10 Tactical Marines inc Melta and ML
10 Scouts with rifles, cloaks, ML and Telion
3 Scout bikers with beacon and 3 AGL
5 Devs with 4 ML
Whirlwind

I let Blaire go 1st, he set up his 5 sternguard, combat squaded marines, whirlwind and devs all around some Tau domes in his DP (2 objectives nearby) whilst his scouts are in a wood to my left (3rd objective) and his bikers are to my right. Bikes turbo scout move and his pod then uses their beacon to land on a hill in the middle of the board (4th and final objective). He shuffles his models around a bit and thats it.

I then get the wrong wave (joy) so bring down my 3 6 strong PB units around his 10 scouts whilst my Fiends scatter miles and end up in the open next to his 10 sternguard, pedro & lsyander. A few runs moves and my turn ends.

Turn 2, Blaire advances his squads again bringing the 5 sternguard up to support his scouts whilst the bikes and the melta gun toting combat squad take position within 12" of the fiends. Unsurprisingly these 2 units plus the 10 sternguard firing hellfire wipe the Fiends out. The rest of his army targets the PB units but fail to kill any of my zombies (go FnP!).

I then fail to get ANY reserves on the board - oh dear so am left with little choice but to take on the scouts, i charge all 18 PB's into them, loose 2 of zombies to the butts of the scouts sniper rifles and then my techno zombies fail to cause a single casualty so i loose by 2 and loose 2 more Zombies from each unit - BUGGER!

Turn 3 see's Lysander march off towards the embattled scouts/PB's, the rest of his army shuffles around consolidating further onto the objectives and his 5 man sternguard unit charges in to assist the scouts. Combat see's things go from bad to worse for me with the sternguard killing the 4 PB's they charged, the scouts kill another PB and then i only manage to kill a single scout in return. Thankfully my Zombies passed their no retreat saves but still i was down to 6 zombies from the original 18 who charged in the previous round and was getting quite concerned to say the least. Tally = 1

I manage to only get Epidemus on in my 3d turn, things are certainly going to pot now, who landed behind the ongoing combat and then managed to kill 2 scouts with Aura of Decay - at last something positive!!!! Combat comes about again all too swiftly with another unit of PB's being wiped out but in a flurry of crazed attacks my final 3 zombies even the score killing 3 scouts. Tally = 6

Turn 4 and the Marines shuffle around to take aim where possible at Epidemus and his chums with the resulting shooting slaying 2 PB's, Lysander then trips over a branch going through some woods and thankfully ends up out of charge range of the Tally Master (thank god for that!). Our eyes then turn towards the combat with the scouts, sternguard and last 2 PB's; there is much waving of hands, pulling of faces and name calling by both sides but it seems no-one bothers to actually hit each other and we don't cause any casualties between us both. Which is great news for me

Finally all my other reserves arrive; Ku'Gath lands near the big unit of sternguard/pedro on the central hill. My Prince lands on the right between the scout bikes and 5 man melta squad whilst the 2 grinders arrive on the north of the wood were the epic combat is going on lining themselves up nicely to hit the other 5 tactical marines, devs and whirlwind. Epidemus then competes my movement by getting ready to charge into the "woods of doom" and save the last 2 PB's. At last i get to have a proper shooting phase and oh what a phase it was. Ku'Gath shoots the central sternguard, scores a hit and kills 7 of them! The Daemon prince kills all the scout bikers with Gaze. Epidemus this time kills 2 sternguard with Aura of Decay and to finish it all off my Grinders kill the ML combat squad and 3 of the 5 devs. HELL YEAH! Epidemus then charges into combat with the Sternguard and scouts who are obviously dumb struck by his glorious majesty, do nothing to him and then get battered to the ground leaving only a sole sternguard and 3 scouts which in all means i have killed 15 models with my Nurgle units in one turn and the tally hits 20! GET IN!

Turn 5; I summon a Nurgling base in near Pedro and safe to say Blaire is awe struck by what just happened but shoulders the carnage and tries to hold onto the objectives. The 5 tactical marines line up to shoot my prince supported by the remaining 2 Sternguard from Pedro's unit and after the bullets have stopped flying i've only taken 1 wound which is nice. His last 2 ML devs take a pop at one of my Grinders and immobilise it but i'm not massively bothered as it has LOS to pretty much his whole army. Pedro then drops his orbital strike onto the same Grinder but it scatters spectacularly - phew. We move to assaults and Lysander decides to charge Ku'Gath who smacks 2 wounds on Lysander without taking any himself and then laughs as Lyander stubs his toe in confusion taking a 3rd wound from No Retreat. In the woods the tables have finally turned and my 3+ to wound (remember the tally only takes affect in my turn) is too much for Telion, his last pupil and the sternguard who all turn to rotten mush under the PB's and Epidemus' attacks.

I then summon a 2nd Nurgling base but it is pretty much all over as far as i am concerned. My 2 grinders blast the last 2 Devs into the afterlife. My prince kills 2 marines with Gaze then charges and finishes the last 3 off. Ku'Gath squashes Lysander like a bug and waddles towards where Pedro is hiding but before Big K can get there Pedro gets charged by one of the free Nurgling bases, who score 3 hits despite needing 5's. I then inform Blaire that the tally affects these little buggers as well so they wond on 2's, 3 wounds rolled, and count as having power weapons. Que Pedro failing his inv saves

The game ends at this point and i win 1-0 on objectives and massively on VPs (he has only his Pod and Whirlwind left)

I manage to only get Epidemus on in my 3d turn, things are certainly going to pot now, who landed behind the ongoing combat and then managed to kill 2 scouts with Aura of Decay - at last something positive!!!! Moving onto game 2 and i saw i was facing Dark Elves.....

Obviously this was a typo and its was infact Dark Eldar

GAME 2 - IAN MCSOMETHING (sorry i forget) - DARK ELDAR - HOME & AWAY/QUARTERS

Lilith
Incubi & Character + Raider
2 Lots of Wyches with various upgrades + Raiders
4x (?) double dark lance warrior squads
6 Grotesques
2 Ravagers (2 darklances and 1 disintegrator)

So he has 15 Darklances then.... ok this is going to hurt big time!

I managed to win the roll for 1st turn so decided my best chances would be to hit him as hard as possible when he is still in his D-Zone which means i went 1st for once. I also then got to pick quarters and essentially put him in the only quarter that had no decent terrain to speak of (a single pile of rocks)(the rest of the board was packed). Ian deployed his army predominately around this rock formation; 1 warrior squad inside, 1 to either side and 1 behind with his flag. Grotesques in a screen to the front and then his Radiers and Ravengers placed on the flanks.

Turn 1: To my delight i got the correct wave! YES! and proceeded to land both Soulgrinders, Ku'Gath and my Daemon Prince right infront of the enemy with the Fiends also coming down behind the big boys ready for a turn 2 charge. My shooting phase commenced with my 1st grinder nuking a ravenger with the resulting explosion killing half a Warrior unit. The 2nd Grinder missed the other but the scatter landed ontop of a Wyche Raider, blowing it up and killing all but 2 of the girls inside plus 4 Warriors from another unit. My Daemon Prince then stunned the Incubi/Lilithe Raider so it wasn't going anywere and i ended the shooting phase with Ku'Gath and the Fiends running forwards to threaten the Warrior lines.

Ian was a bit stunned by how destructive my Grinders where and decided to do something about them, he shot his remaining ravenger at it, scored 2 hits, 2 6's to pen and double 6 to blow me up. I was expecting this and was waiting for the other grinder and/or Ku'Gath to no doubt suffer a similar fate. Grandfather Nurgle was smiling on me as Ian then failed to hit with any of the other Lances!!!! I couldn't believe how lucky i was and really felt for him at the same time as now he knew that 2nd Grinder and the big guys were going to take out his army in short order. He ponders for a few minutes and then decides to unleash his 2nd Wyche unit on my Fiends to at least remove then from the equation. Unfortunatly his charge failed to cause any casualties, my Fiends then unleashed 25 attacks on him resulting in 4 dead Wyches and the unit been overrun when they broke.

At this point i am looking at the board dumbfounded at how jammy i have just been and knowing that i have basically won the game.

Turn 2 onwards was over very quickly with the Prince blowing up Liliths raider, the Grinder taking out the ravager whilst the Fiends and Ku'Gath ripped through his warriors in no time at all. Lilith and the Incubi fell to the combined might of the Prince and Grinder and despite the game kept going to Turn 7 but really from the end of my 4th turn onwards all he had left was a single raider contesting my home flag (Fiends & Epidemus/PB's charged it twice and failed to kill it) whilst i had 2 PB units sat on his.

1-0 to me and again another 1400+ VPs.

Ok found out of a a friend of a friend that it was mearly the Lilith model armed as near identical as possible but not her ladyship.

GAME 3 - JOSH ROBERTS (EXODITE) - ORCIES - KILL POINTS/DAWN OF WAR

Ah so i am scoring too many VP's and am now on table 3 versus Josh's Battlewagons

EEEEEP! I knew this was going to happen sooner or later. My army struggles versus AV14 mech due to its highest ranged weapons been S8 so i have to get into combat but versus Orks that is not always ideal since they are likely to counter charge you in return. I've have though beaten Battlewagons and Land Raiders in the past with this army, granted i did enjoy a fair old chunk of luck to do it but hey i can get lucky again right? And it'll have to be really lucky versus someone as game savy as Josh!

I actually won the roll for board edges and graciously allowed Josh to pick and go 1st. Josh obliged by rolling all 4 wagons forward in that much loved and recognised formation of his (big wedge side to side) and things quickly moved to me.

Things started well with me getting the right wave. In this game it was slightly different to the norm; Ku'Gath, Epidemus and all the PB's went in wave 2 as they cannot really hope to touch Wagons whilst my Grinders, Fiends and Prince came down 1st hoping to pop open the Wagons ASAP. I managed to land a grinder to each opposite flank of Josh's army but unfortunately both the Fiends and Prince scatter considerably towards the Orks bringing them dangerously close. My shooting got me quite excited when both Grinders scored penetrating hits on 2 wagons but the blasted KFF saved them both.

Turn 2 and the wagon full of Orks peels off to attack my left Grinder via thier boarding plank, thankfully Josh fluffs his chance and my Daemonic Engine escapes unscathed. The other 3 wagons roll forwards disgorging the Burnas opposite my Fiends and 20 boyz straight beside my Prince. The Fiends suffer heavily at the hands of the Burnas with only 2 surviving and thankfully out of range for the follow up charge. My Prince does much better killing 4 Boyz whilst only taking a single wound himself (shame they are fearless).

The Gods seem to smile upon me in a way when non of my reserves arrive, which is good as there are still 4 untouched wagons driving around. I push my right hand Grinder forwards towards the Battlewagon line, scoring another pen with his phlegm shot which once again bounces off the blasted KFF. My other grinder managed to dodge the Grabbing Klaw, move to the side of the wagon and before charging also scores a pen with his phelgm attack. Woooooo no KFF now baby. Ah balls i roll a 1. Well its ok i might get it in combat..... yes i score a 6 to hit, auto pen...... another 1... FUCK! Then to upset me further Josh uses that boarding plank of his to run the Nob out and blow my maw weapons up (so no phlegm). Next up my 2 Fiends charge the Burna boyz and with the 12 attacks manage to slay all but 4 buggers. Doesn't help that Josh managed to score 4 wounds out of 8 attacks and my last 2 Fiends vanish back to the warp. Finally the slug fest with the prince continues, he slays 3 or so Orks and takes another wound from the Klaw.

Turn 3 and Joshes Grots show up unsure were to go with Grinders to either side and plump for the centre of the board. He then rolls Big G's Wagon over to my left hand Grinder to support the original wagon which also lines up for another plank attack. The Nob from the boy unit does nothing but not too surprisingly Big G's 7 S10 attacks make short work of my engine and reduce it to scrap metal in record time. The Burnas pile back into their wagon and together with the remaining tank move into a blocking position against the last grinder preventing it getting LOS to the Grots. Once again we turn to the Prince versus Boyz, again i score 4 kills now bringing them down to only 4 models..... shame the Boyz now realise how to wound me and i fail both 3+ saves This isn't really going well is it? Can't get any worse though, can it?

My turn and i get all but 1 of the PB units down. Looking at the board and the fact i am 3-0 down on KP's i am going to have to be a bit ballsey to even the score. I send 1 unit of PB's down beside the Grots knowing that the Wagons are all going to be just too far away to save them and the Orks will have to Waaaagggh to charge them. So i should be able to charge them and kill them before i die. Well it will be a start. Next up Epi scatters miles backwards and ends pretty much in the bottom right corner closely followed by the 2nd PB unit. Well not too bad i guess but they aint going to be doing much either. Finally Big K.... ok i am down on KP's do i need to do something quick and decide its gotta be all out with him. So i stick Big K reasonably close to the last 4 Ork boyz hoping to get his Breathe off and make them run. Now i never normally risk him this close for fear of a bad scatter..... and that is what i got landing directly on top of the Boyz and rolling a 1 on the mishap table. BUGGER! That is my last big change of winning gone. The rest of my turn moves quickly with the last Grinder slaying the 4 boyz responsible for K's death with his vomit attack (S6 hvy flamer) and all the newly arrived PB units running to better positions.

Turn 4; Big G's pimp mobil and the supporting Boy wagon both steam back towards the centre of the board whilst (after some encouragement from me) his Grots move towards the PB's to shoot them.... what do you mean they have killed 4/6! That's ridiculous! Wait a minute you're charging them now and you've scored how many wounds!!!! **** Note to ones self. Never encourage 10 Grots to take on 6 PB's as the PB's get squashed like flies **** Things are really not going for me are they?

From this point on i was 5-1 down and rapidly running out of options. My only hope lay in my last Grinder who heroically charged into the Wagon containing the Burnas after a nice fleet roll. Maybe a double kill might start to even the score. Shame i missed all my attacks this time. Again Epi and the Pb's shuffled away from the approaching doom known as Big G and 4 Mega Nobz.

Turn 5 saw Josh seal the already inevitable victory with Big G calling the WAAAGGGH to get into combat with Epi and his body guard. Despite Epi scoring a wound on Big G the result was inevitable and i died to a mass of S9/10 Power Klaws. Next up the 2nd unit of 20 Boyz charged out against my last Grinder and this time the Nob remembered to switch on his Klaw nuking me twice over.

With that my game was over, my turn i ran my last 2 PB units away from the Orks and thankfully the game did not continue to a 6th.

End score 8-1 to Josh and about 1320 VPs to about 400 (a 3rd from wounding Big K).

So end of Saturday despite a resound spanking at the hands of the Stallion i was still on a respectable 2 wins and about 3,000 VPs.

(aye it does).....and i finished the night with a rather nice kebab and chips on the way home (been ages since i had kebab)

Right since i am not allowed to go into Uni due to having "flu like symptoms" (i don't, i have a chest infection but the lecturer yesterday wouldn't listen) and its a bit early to read more on chivalry (need to summarise a 16pg txt into 300 words - tis hard!) i may as well move onto Game 4.

GAME 4 - GUDBRANDUR MAGNISSON - ORKS - KILL POINTS/QUARTERS

So that's 152 models for me to fight! Well its going to be messy that's for sure! We rolled up for the quarters etc, i won and "kindly" deposited him in an essentially barren quarter of the board which he then filled to the brim with greenskins; Grots in 2 lines covering the army, 3 boy units behind, Big G, the KFF and the last boy unit behind them with the Lootas spread out across the back of the board.

Turn 1: I get the wrong wave! Good start to the Sunday me thinks...... mmmm. So down come the Fiends behind a central building within striking distance of the Ork army whilst the 3 smaller PB units all land deep into my quarter and run to cut out any LOS to them from the Lootas. Exciting turn eh?

The Orks then predictable all move and run forwards slowly dispersing from their DZ and whilst this took some time nothing else actually happened.

Turn 2 (or as we later decided when the battle really began): I roll for my reserves and Ol Pappa Nurgle is obviously happy with my consumption of a dirty kebab the night before as all my reserves except a single Grinder arrive. The scatters though weren't so good: Ku'Gath sails 10" directly away from the Ork army landing beside a small PB unit. Epidemus sails 10" directly towards the Ork army and in LOS of all the Lootas. My Grinder does the same and ends up 2" away from the whole Ork army (!). The finally not wanting to be different my Prince also scatters away from the action narrowly missing the Fiends when he lands. Well at least no-one misshaped. I then shuffle the PB's forward slightly with Epi trying to put some distance between himself and the Orks. My Grinder then opens up on the nearest Ork unit with his Vomit/Flamer cooking 5 Orks and 4 Grots who were also in the way but his Harvester bounces of the massive KFF bubble (it is actually protecting an area close to 24" across). Ku'Gath and the prince both run back towards the Ork lines and then i turn to the Fiends. Ok there are 2 big Grot units in the way of the Ork army. To get to the meat i need to kill them methinks and so i charge the Fiends into both units surmising it will be a 2-1 exchange when the Orks counter charge them but importantly opens up his boy units to my bigger hitters. Thankfully i didn't fluff my attacks and both Grot units are destroyed without the Fiends taking a single wound and to make things better i roll a 6" for my consolidation and scuttle back up the building i just came from. (Tally = 0)(2-0 KP )

Big G obviously had a soft spot for those Grots as at this point he calls the WAAAGGGHHHH (somewhat odd i though seeing as Big G is miles away and never going to get into combat, infact most of his army is too far away) and proceeds to charge Epi/PB's with 1 boy unit (4 boyz make contact), Ku'Gath and some PB's with another unit (about 6 or so make contact), the Grinder with his 3rd boy unit and finally after shooting all his Lootas and other Orks at the Fiends (no kills as i went to ground knowing i will still strike 1st in combat) his 4th unit that no longer includes Big G (he breaks him off in the movement phase) slams into the Fiends (about half make it). Combat rolls on with the Orks bouncing off Ku'Gath and the PB's, me killing a handful (9 iirc) and then the Nob klawing 3 Pb's in return. Epidemus and his bodyguard kill another 4 Orks without a loss (no Nob in range). My Fiends slay about 10 Orks with some handy rolling on my part and somehow manage to survive the massed return attacks with 2 of the spiders alive and again slaying more Orks due to Fearless - they then hit and run lining up to re-charge Finally things stop going my way when the Grinder fluffs his attacks (not that it would have made much difference) and gets blown up by the Klaw from the final Ork unit. (Tally = 12/13)(2-1 KP )

Turn 3: Things are looking good for me and despite not getting my Soulgrinder i'm feeling pretty confident and decide to commit my army to the assault. I send a 2nd PB unit in to "help" Ku'Gath and the original PB's whilst the remaining PB mob and the Prince fly over to assist Epidemus in his struggles. After killing a couple of Orks in each major combat with Aura of Decay (so cheeky when you roll 6's versus orks) my Fiends also charge back into combat and i pick up my dice in anticipation. I was not dissapointed! My Fiends mullered the remaining Orks and despite loosing 1 more to the return attacks the Orks took enough casualties to wipe them out due to still been Fearless thanks to Big G's WAAAAGGGHHH. Next up the combined forces of my Prince, Epidemus and PB's took out enough Orks to again despite loosing several more PB's see them be wiped out from No Retreat. Finally the combined prowess of Ku'Gath and more PB's was too much for the final Ork unit who again despite brining both PB units down to size didn't have enough models left to stay alive for another round. I consolidate 3 of my PB units away from the Orks and into cover (all 3 had only 2 models left purely due to Power Klaw attacks) and i tot up my Tally quite smugly (Tally = 20+)(5-1 KP )

So moving into the Ork 3rd turn i am feeling pretty confident that the game is going to be mine after that wicked combat phase. Gudbran took stock of his army. There was only Big G, the KFF, 20 odd boyz and his lootas left versus the majority of my big hitters. Undaunted he moves his remaining boyz into position to take out the last Fiend and Big G starts stomping towards Ku'Gath and 2 of the depleted PB units. The shooting phase commences with the big Loota squad opening up on my Prince, he only gets 15 shots of so i am pretty confident he'll still be around after this, oh wait a minute that's 4/4 failed 3+ saves. POP! *** Question: Why does my Daemon Prince always pass his 5+ inv but then always dies to petty small arms fire against his 3+ save? *** Next up the last unit of Boyz takes down the Fiend in combat and then gets a mighty 6" consolidate launching them towards Epidemus and his 5 remaining chums. Finally Big G gets a sprint on to attack Ku'Gath but without his 2+ WAAAAGGGH Inv he suffers 3 wounds before he can swing, only causes 2 in return (Gudbran wasn't too chuffed about me having defensive grenades) and then promptly rolls a 1 for his No Retreat save - SQUISH! (Tally=20)(KP=6-3 )

Turn 4 finally see's the last Grinder arrive and it lands in close to the big Loota unit, cooking off a few of them with its Vomit Flamer and harvester but not enough to rout them. Ku'Gath see's he is too far away from the last Boy mod to charge them so instead skips towards the smaller Loota unit and kills them all with his smelly breathe and explosive nurglings. I suffle the 3 depleted PB units further back out of LOS and then move onto Epidemus... The Orks are about 8" away so a decent move and run should see me safe; errr double 1 to move and a 2 on the run was not what i was looking for! (Tally = 20++++)(7-3 KP )

Moving to the Ork turn the Lootas desperately try to stop the Grinder but fail to score any glancing hits The Orks quickly pounce upon Epidemus's pitiful stumble launching into combat with him and his PB's and despite me scoring a couple of hits its not good enough and only Epidemus is left alive on 1 wound. At this point i advise Gunbar of a rather interesting rule regarding the fact IC's must pile in 1st where possible into base to base which means his KFF toting Big Mek has to face up to a rather upset, 2+ to wound power weapon Epidemus for the next round of combat (7-4 KP )

Turn 5: Ku'Gath tries to gather some momentum to get in and help Epidemus but the big guy is distracted by something pretty in the woods and decides not to bother (double 1 and a 2 on the move left me well short of the charge). The Grinder is not slow however and steams straight into the Lootas (after cooking more with his Vomit attack) to quickly chop them into little pieces with his big buzz saw. Yeah! Our eyes move towards Epidemus who gets to swing at the big mek 1st, he scores 2 wounds buts its not enough and a quick blow to the back of the head by a cheeky Ork banishes the Tally man. (8-5 KP's )

Things are still looking good for me and Gunbar knows it. He decides he has to gamble for the win so sends the Big Mek off alone to chase down the much battered PB units. He'll need at least 1 more turn to get there though so i am not too worried. He then opts to send his last Boy unit in Ku'Gath in an attempt to take down the big man and he nearly does! The Boyz alone score 3 wounds on Ku'Gath despite his saves and FnP and i narrowly avoid Power Klaw banishment by passing 2 4+ inv saves! That was not how it was meant to happen! (8-5 KP's )

Turn 6 (the slug fest continues) was pretty quick for me. All the remaining PB's lurch despairingly slowly away from the Big Mek whilst my run of bad terrain tests continues with the Grinder failing to move into support Ku'Gath. We move to combat and despite Ku'Gath dispatching a few orks with Aura of Decay and 5 more with his sword it is not enough, the Nob manages to land a single Power Klaw blow which i fail to save and Plaguemaster is gone (8-6 KP's )

A quick assessment of the boards shows that if the Big Mek can really get a more on he might just make combat thins turn, thank god then he fluffs his terrain (its contagious these bad terrain checks) so Gunbar needs to get his Orks into combat to kill the Grinder, he makes his terrain check this time, and get another turn to get that big mek in to even the score...... My Grinder swings and chops up a couple of boyz. The nob then lays in with the power klaw scoring 2 pens.... oh dear.... double 4 - imobilised! GET IN! I am still in the fight!

We pass the dice to an neighbouring table to roll for turn 7, its a 1 and the game is mine 8-6 on KPs and less than 400 Vps left alive on the board between us - This game won me and Gunbar the "Chosen of Khorne" award for most bloodiest game

Great game and a 3rd win under my belt saw me moving towards qualification.

GAME 5 - KARL (DUDLEY DARK LORDS) - ELDAR (BOOOO!) - HOME & AWAY/PITCHED BATTLE

Right so once again it is Home & Away versus Eldrad Holo Tanks. For those who don't know every since the advent of 5th Ed I always face this kind of army in a home & away game at tournies (at least once, sometimes twice a tourney) and it always ends up with the Eldar turboing onto both objectives turn 5 and the game ending there are then. I have nothing against Eldar armies (think they look ace and will be getting my own soon) but just a bit fed up with getting bummed by holo tanks and random game length...... oh look i am ranting about them again

So with those thoughts running through my mind i was determined to make sure it wouldn't happen again....

(i'm not bitter honest)

As i roll up to the table i am pretty pleased to see that Karl is one of the green t-shirt wearing Dudley Dark Lords, i have played a couple of these lads before and each game was a fun one so already my doom and gloom about holo tanks was disappearing. More so me getting to choose to go 2nd made me even happier (can have a chance to kill the tanks after the turn 5 turbo move) and the game was on.

Turn 1: Karl decides (sensibly) to hold both jetbike squads in reserve while his Warwalkers go off outflanking. He deploys his Pathfinders on his home base amongst some rocks in the top left with the Avatar and holo tanks taking station nearby. Quick casting of fortune on both holotanks by Eldrad and the buck passes to me.

Righteo holo tanks eh? I plump for all my big anti-tank hitters (Ku'Gath, both Grinders, Prince and Fiends) in the 1st wave and the gods are smiling Ku'Gath lands about 10" from the Avtar, the fiends and prince behind him amongst a MASSIVE ruin (this was something like 10x10"). My 1st Grinder landed to the other side of it and then was promptly joined by the 2nd and when i say joined i mean landed ontop of. Ah! I just rolled a 1 and 1st blood (well technically) goes to me for killing my own Grinder. The shooting phase is a non starter with all my shots scattering or missing. So not the best of starts then.

Turn 2: With no reserves arriving Karl steams the Falcon with Eldard and the Dragons in next to my Grinder ready for some tankhunting close ranged melta action, even casting guide on the dragons just to make sure. He then casts doom on my Daemon prince and again fortunes his own Falcon (damn 3 spell pixie wizard). The Avatar shuffles around as does the Harlie Falcon and the shooting phase commences. The Pathfinders and 2 Falcons both target my Prince and due to some audatious luck i don't take a single wound. Things then get even better when the dragons only score 2 penetrating hits and both roll 1 on the chart doing NOTHING to the grinder! YEAH BABY!

With a big grin on my face i Epidemus and one of the other PB units arrive. Epi lands on my home base (bottom left in a wood) whilst the PB's land in the mega ruins opposite the Eldar castle. Ku'Gath stomps towards the Avatar knocking a wound off the supposed God with his breath but chumpishly fails to charge Its ok though as my Fiends do have the range and slam into mr Eldar God. At this point i think i should have been making mockery of how puny the eldar gods look (Karl has the old metal avatar) as my Fiends massed attacks fail to cause a single wound whilst the Avatar slays 2 of my Spiders. Next up my Grinder slams into the holofalcon but fails to score a hit. I then decide to cheer myself up by watching the Daemon Prince kill all the dragons with ease, at least something went right, and my turn ends (Tally=5)

Turn 3: The Jetbikes and Warwalkers all decide to arrive and all do so (through Karls own choice) on the far right of the board away from the main battle. Oh look the Eldar are trying to stay away - chickens! Both holo falcons take position opposite my Grinder but again its lives a charmed life and the Pulsars bounce of it. The Harlies on the other hand make a beeline for the freshly arrived PB unit and make VERY short work of the 6 zombies. Lastly (after the pathfinders again did nothing to the prince) Eldard steps out of his pimp tank, casts fortune on himself, doom on the prince and also mindwar, which fails - silly elf. He then lofts his spear on high and charges into the Prince. to my surprise my Prince actually gets a wound past the 3+ re-rolling inv save and even better Eldrad misses with his attacks! EVEN BETTER Eldard then breaks (he rolled a 10 for his Ld, needed a 9) and is promptly swept and eaten by my Prince - WHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ELDRAD DIES! I was pretty happy about this. Lastly the fiends manage to only loose 1 more of thier number against the Avatar and then hit and run away from the pixe god. (Tally = 6)

My turn and all my other PB units arrive around the Eldar home base. Ku'Gath also summons a nurgling base in close for future usage and then stomps up to engage the Avatar in a bit of mortal combat. My Prince swoops across the board and his daemonic gaze slays one of the Jet bike squads whilst the Grinder chases one of the Falcons that is moving towards my home base but his fleet roll finds him too short to charge. Things quickly move to combat with my Fiends charging and slaying all the Pathfinders and Ku'Gath knocks the avatar down to his last wound RAAARRRR! (Tally = 14)

Turn 4: Karl turbo's his last Jetbike squad(and therefore troop choice) towards my home base bringing them dangerously close to my daemon prince. He knows my mini god has to die and so pumps all 3 Warwalkers and both Falcons into him. The smoke clears and the Prince is left on 1 wound - yes! Next up despite the Avatar causing 2 wounds on Ku'Gath the little elf daemon gets smacked down by Pappa Nurgle who then stomps onto the Eldar flag. Things don't all go my way though with the Harlies charging and slaying my fiends without themselves even getting hit (damn those space clowns are good). (Tally = 15)

Things are still looking good for me, need to kill those Harlies - Que Ku'Gath and 2 PB units stomping all over them in record time. Take out the Jetbikes - Daemon Prince swoops in and eats all 3 in combat. And take out one of those Holo Tanks to win... watch my Grinder again roll naff all on his fleet and again just falls 1/2" short of charging the Falcon near my home flag. Well there is still plenty of time... (Tally = 20 but nothing left to power weapon)

Turn 5: Karl is left with limited options now. He starts off pouring all his warwalker fire into my prince but the beast shrugs it off (yep can you believe it i passed some 3+ saves). He then moves both Falcons onto each flag, spins both turrets and takes a pot shot at Ku'Gath for VP's but i save and another against the uber Daemon prince who stops been uber and dies.

Ok here we go, 2 Falcons - just need to take one out. Ku'Gath and close to 12 PB's charge the one over the Eldar flag but don't even score a single hit (even Ku'Gaths breath bounced). Epidemus and his PB's charge the 2nd, nothing. Ok its down my Soulgrinder, oh look i again roll too low for my Fleet and end up *JUST* out of 6".

Errrr there are 2 Holofalcons on each flag and this looks all too familiar.

We pass the dice to a spectator and it comes up 1. BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER its a draw!

Did i mention how much i hate holo falcons in home & away missions?

Despite my deflated feeling hats off to Karl for a great game in the face of what was on his part a lot of poor luck. Guess it all balanced out in the end with the game ending when it needed to for him.

So that's 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss and about 5500vps so far which means game 6 anything but a loss will see me through.

GAME 6 - ALBERTO - ORKS - OBJECTIVES/DAWN OF WAR

Mega Armoured Warboss with Cybork body
Biker Warboss with Klaw, Squig, Cybork Body

4 Biker Nobz in Painboy, Klaw, Pole, Banner
15 Lootas
20 shoota Boyz inc nob with klaw

3 Battlewagons

So more battlewagons to face then? I was surprised that Alberto hadn't taken Mr G but he said he preferred not to which is a refreshing change and was even happier when he suggested we grab a beer before starting to play (a man of my own heart it seemed).

The board was pretty symmetrical, 2 big woods in each D-Zone, another MASSIVE ruin in the centre and one of those Tau domes (impassible) on my left flank. Alberto won the roll off and "graciously" allowed me to go 1st whilst only deploying his Mega Nobz and Warboss in thier battlewagon dead centre of the board. Well if i get the right wave this could be good.

TURN 1 and i didn't get the chosen wave so i was left to drop down all my small PB's which i did on my right flank figuring at least if the warboss charges i might be able to counter act and gets some kills (obviously the beer was making me a bit too confident in my PB's), Epidemus landed on my left flank to take another objective (worth noting there were infact only 3 on the board in roughly a diagonal line from the top right to bottom left) and Ku'Gath came in close the the centre of the board hoping to entice the Mega Nobz his way.

Alberto wasn't a sucker though and after rolling this Boy Wagon and Bikers onto the board, again aiming for the centre, and his lootas on the extreme left. The Warboss's wagon rolled towards the PB's on the left with the big boyz jumping out, splitting up and taking out 2 PB units on the charge without a wound taken on their part. OUCH!

Turn 2 sees all my reserves except one Soulgrinder arrive. My Prince lands behind the central ruin thankfully out of LOS of the Loota wagon, my Fiends land to the left of it again nicely hidden (it was a big ruin - one of the old Inq terrain pieces) then finally my Soulgrinder scatters to land right ontop of the middle objective but immobilises itself in doing so Oh and Ku'Gath summons a single Nurgling base (more of this later). Ku'Gath moves towards the bikers and my last small PB unit runs into the central ruins to claim the objective my Grinder is sitting on. My shooting phase is actually pretty damn good. Ku'Gath manages to nip 2 wounds from the Biker unit. My Grinder and Prince also pour their fire into the unit, the prince takes another wound off a biker but the Grinder is the real star killing 2 bikes with its Phlegm and another by removing another wound with the harvester! Alberto is totally bemused at the fact he failed every single save he had to make but at happily for him passes his LD test. (Tally=1)

The Orks waste no time in getting to grips with my army. The Mega Nobz and Bikers both attempt to converge upon the PB unit scurrying into the ruins but luckily for me the Orks are just out of charge range. Next up his Lootas pour some fire into Ku'Gath but it all bounces of the big mans saves & FnP. He then announces that he is going to shoot the Ork shoota boyz (who have just disembarked) at Ku'Gath. When the dice stop spinning Ku'Gath has taken 4 wounds!!! EEEPPPPPP! Alberto is about to finish his turn when i then remind him that he still has 2 big shootas in that squad to fire, so that's them scoring 2 wounds and me failing both 4+ inv and FnP saves! AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH Ku'Gath is dead! Alberto does a little Spanish victory dance and happily declares its my turn.

Turn 3 with a heavy sigh looking at the space that Ku'Gath previously occupied i decide revenge is required and so i fire my soulgrinder at the orks, who are nicely bunched up, killing close to a dozen of them before i send my 5 fiends into combat who promptly slay all the Orks without even taking a wound themselves - RAAAARRRR! Next up my Prince swoops into combat with Biker Warboss and dispatches the Ork with ease. The painboy and power klaw swing but are obviously in awe of my Princes glorious body (mmmmm Nurgle) and miss with everything. They do however manage to pass their LD and now i am a little too close to those Mega Nobz. (Tally = 2)

The Grots decide to arrive now and quickly jump into the wagon the boyz have just vacated which then speeds off towards the centre of the board. The lootas try to shoot the fiends but only get 1 shot each resulting in next to no wounds all of which are saved by my killer spiders. The wagon that held the mega nobz tank shocks its way into the central ruin, pushing the PB's out of cover but its big shoota does nothing. Finally Alberto calls the WAAAGGGH and sends his mega nobz and warboss crashing into my Prince. My Prince decides if he is going to die he is taking someone with him and quickly dispatches the Mega Armoured Warboss with a quick flick of his hand. Alberto then pours 15 Power Klaw attacks into my Prince but somehow i manage to survive on 1 wound and the combat is a draw! Yeah! (Tally = 3)

Turn 4 and my last Soul Grinder arrives but scatters all over the place ending up between the middle ruin and the loota wagon, he pops a shot off at the Lootas but AV14 is too much for his Phlegm. My 2nd Grinder fires a warning shot into the Grot wagon but that also bounces. My Fiends then charge it but despite their 30 attacks i only score 2 hits which don't managed to penetrate. Now i turn towards the Prince. How can i win combat when i only have 1 wound and there is a biker with a Klaw and 4 Mega nobz fighting me. I know send in a Nurgling base!

This is what i realised:

If the Nurgling base charges the last Biker it becomes involved in the multiple combat. Then the Prince just needs to kill the biker before it can hit the Nurglings. If he does this he has caused 2 wounds, the Mega nobz can then only hit him, causing a maximum of 1 wound, which means the Nurglings will win combat!

So i do it! The Prince does kill the Biker and the Mega Nobz kill the prince. I explain to Alberto that i have won combat, he is impressed by the tactic and now a bit worried about having to pass a LD6 moral check (Nobz only been LD7). The bugger rolls a double 1 and grins and me whilst the mega nobz prepare to squish the Nurglings.

Well it could have worked. (tally = 4)

Albertos turn and he tank shocks Epidemus and his chums off the objective whilst the Grots wagon moves up to contest the one held by the PB's and Grinder. The Lootas shoot the Grinder who has just arrived and succeed in removing his maw gun. Lastly (it was a quick turn by now) the Mega Nobz squish the Nurgling base and consolidate towards the PB's and Grinder in the middle.

Turn 5 right i need to stop those mega nobz and take out one of the 2 contesting wagons. This is feeling somewhat familiar to last game... both grinders fire upon the grot wagon but again fail to do anything. Epidemus and his Zombies also bounce of the tank on their objective so things are not going well. Lastly i zoom my fiends across to attack the mega nobz; 30 attacks later and i have not scored a single wound! Not one rend and not a single save failed. 12 Klaw hits later and i have 1 Fiend left NOT GOOD!

There is very little for Alberto to do in his turn apart from move both contesting Battlewagons 7" whilst staying within 3" of the objectives and watch his Mega Nobz pummel the last Fiend.

We roll to see if the game will end but its goes to a 6th Turn - YES! I can still do this!

Turn 6 again sees my PB's all hopelessly try to hurt a Battlewagon in combat and fail. But more positively my immobilised grinder scores a glance on the grot wagon and immobilised it! Yes at last some progress. Lastly my mobile Grinder swoops into the 4 mega nobz and with 4 hits and wounds dispatches them all with ease allowing him to line up against the immobile grot wagon for the next turn (if there is one).

The Ork turn again is over quickly with the wagons doing their shuffle and the Lootas bouncing off my mobile grinder.

We pass the dice to someone else to roll for the 7th Turn, we both know that if the game continues i am likely to kill the Grot wagon and win the game....... its a 1! Game over!

Draw.

Once again beaten by random game length. One more turn is always all i seem to need. Ah well that was a brilliant game and the perfect ending to a top weekend. Cheers again Alberto, Karl, Gudbrandar, Josh, Ian and Blaire for 6 top games.

When the final results were in i missed out on a painting certificate (unsurprising considering some of the armies on show) but did get the Bloodiest Game award for mine and Gudbrandar's 4th game and overall i came 34th (3 wins, 2 draws and 6550vps) which means for the 6th year in a row i am going to the final.

(Or just go totally Slaanesh)

I also got tempted last week when i dug my Orks out for a game. Mmmm could easily make them into Speed freaks and finish painting them properly.

Oh but wait the Nid book is arriving soon....
