So, before we got to the tournament on the first day, we went and played some games in warhamer world.
I gave Kerry (a warhamster) a practice game against his dark elves. Charged into one hydra with dragon ogres and another with 2 chariots. Chariots took one down to a wound before getting battered while the dragon ogres caused one wound on the other. I managed to draw the black guard unit away (by the centigor unit charging in and one surviving to flee away forcing the pursuit) long enough to get some flank charges off on the weakened hydras with the beastlords unit. After they were gone the black guard didn't play much further part in the game with me keeping out of trouble while trying to catch the rest of his support units.

The night was spent in the salutation with an early morning start.

So first game and I'm hoping for a nice easy one to ease my way into the tournament.
I end up playing Ant spiers (the guy who won the GT last year) and his dark elves. Dragon, manticore and hydra with 2 RBT and a couple of other inconsequential units. With their 6th ed ranking rules beastman are in a lot of trouble against monsters and 3 terror causers in one army is exactly the reason I chose to go mark of nurgle rather than tzeentch this year. Anyway, bottom line is Hydra and dragon move over to my beastlords herd and breath on them, as the black dragon has caused a wound I now need Ld check at -3 to declare a charge with them next phase (before my Ld 8 fear check of course) but before any of that I've got a Ld 8 panic check. Off I run. I rally on a 10 but I'm staring at a double dragon/hydra charge next turn. I break out the power stone staff of darkoth combo and get the charge myself but have to charge both creatures. Even with the charge I get battered and then get run down. game over.

I had a chance to get a flank charge off on the hydra before it moved over to breath on me with the staff of darkoth but was just out of range of 25% of my unit being in. May have made a difference but probably not.

Second game. My Ld 8 beastman are up against siren song keeper, masque, -2 Ld banner and blue scribes. This was the same guy I played at heat 2. Had a good game and pushed him close again but at the end of the day there was just nothing I could do about the big guy. (Though I did kill the tzeentch herald atleast ). Another loss.

3rd game, table quarters - beastmans time to shine! I get drawn against a warriors of chaos army. I'm in a commanding position in the game but it all goes horribly wrong when I charge a chariot and my beastlords unit into a single T5 3 wound no armour spawn needing to kill it and then roll about a 2 to overrun safetly out the way behind his army. Chariot with d6 +1 S5 impact hits, 3 S5 and 1 S4 attack do nothing, beastlord with 4 attacks needing 3's then 2's does a single wound and bray shaman with 2 S5 (3's then 4's) does another. Spawn survives and I get flanked by a chaos lord on a manticore and a shaman on a chariot.....ouch. Thankfully while my beastlords getting himself killed the rest of my army has gone about killing all his scoring units and my army controls all four quarters meaning he can only kill a max of two of them in his last turn. First win to the beastmen 4-0.

4th game. Another table quarters scenario, another warriors of chaos army. This one had vilitch the curseling, festus the leechlord and a BSB in a unit of chosen, 2 marauder horse unit, some frenzied marauders with flails, nurgle knights with the banner of rage and a shaggoth. Both units of centigor go afterone marauder horse and pin and destroy them. Shaggoth plays keep out of charge range with my dragon ogres. Small herd forces marauders to charge forwards and get double charioted, other chariot forces knights to charge exposing their flank to minotaurs (second time I've had 4 GW wielding minos charge into the flank of some chaos knights and do 0 wounds in the first round of combat!) eventually breaking them. He's down to his last scoring unit which is surrounded, vilitch flees away still casting infernal gateway everyturn and I've run out of scrolls, he gets one off on the minos doing 8 S4 but now I do the move cast other spells reveal power stone staff of darkoth combo and charge vilitch with my beastlords herd killing him. 5-0 on table quarters to me.

5th game. My reward for winning 2 games with beastman is to face daemons. Not just any daemons either. Thirster, 2 tzeentch heralds, 3 units of horrors, 3 x 5 fleshounds, 1 x 5 flamers. Scenario is kill points. So, more magic than me, a flying nasty I can't touch, better shooting than me and better combat then me. Bugger.

However......it quickly becomes apparant that (much like all my other opponents - even ant spiers) my opponent has NO idea what beastman can do or are like. Therefore he gives my beastlord FAR too much credit. Instead of just flying the thirster down my beastlords throat in his first turn and giving me a charge or be charged situation which would have pretty much auto won him the game, he's much more cautious with him. This lets me get my beastlord into a large wood in his deployment zone and into the flamers therein - netting me 3 kill points for the loss of the centigor (1KP) on that side of the board. I feed the thirster a chariot (1KP) while my dragon ogres charge a unit of hounds killing them over 3 turns (2KP). The thirster flys around behind my army landing behind my minotaurs and near another chariot. He thinks my minos are out of range of his flesh hounds, they're not, I charge in, getting out of range of the thirster (my chariot hid armoud the thirsters flank) and again over a couple of rounds of combat I beat them (another 2KP). The remaining fleshounds were too preoccupied keeping their flank and the horror/herald block near them away from my beastlords herd to come and help out. My 2 shaman herd (over on the right flank with the dragon ogres) reached and killed a herald/horror block (2KP). This brings my total up to 9KP. His magic has cast flickering fire at S7 onto another chariot destroying that but so far he's on 3KP. The best the blood thirster can do is charge into the minos (2KP) and then fly over for a terror check on the centigor unit which fails (1KP) before the game ends. 9KP-6KP victory to the beasts of chaos!

So with 3 wins 2 losses I go into the 6th game on a high and have reached the dizzying heights of table 25 lol.
I get drawn against a dwarf list and its pitched battle. This is an unusual dwarf list. He gets the first turn and strollaz rune/marches into the centre of the table. I don't have anything deployed in the centre of the table. All my stuff is out on the flanks as I saw it coming. After the first 4 turns are over in about 20 minutes its apparant that I'm not going to suicide my army in at his immovable dwarf blocks (ironbreakers, hammerers and longbeards with lord BSB and runesmith with oath stones aplenty) and he's not coming out to get into combat either. So I say if he wants we can call it a draw and then we'll just carry on for the remaining time until we feel like stopping and I'll run my army at him and we'll see what happens.4-5 turns later and I've broken the ironbreakers and BSB, all the smaller auxillery units and he's made a lot of armour saves for his lord to save his last wound (he only had a 1+ armour and no ward it turns out so the minos were taking their toll on him with their rear charge) but the hammerers broke the DO's and minos in the rear and that paniced off the beastlords herd who hadn't pursued far enough to get into the combat. He had gone first so I had a turn to rally them all but we just called it there. Think I'd probably won the game as long as the beastlord unit had rallied (on a 10) and possibly one of the DO or mino units (on an 8) but we didn't bother counting up.

Last game draw, and a very nice relaxed way to end the tournament.

Came 45th and top beastman player so made both of my goals.

Sceptical whether or not I'll be back next year though, the UKGT is, even more so than last year, go cheese or go home. Think I'll go to some campaign weekends instead (and we let them know on the feedback forms that was our opinion).

shame about the last game, but at least it wasn't a crap last game against some nobber. 45th at the final with beasts is not too shaby at all
