Sure the prices are high, and going up, however as pointed out elsewhere: Read the financial figures that GW puts out. The production costs are not the issue in regards to the prices - it's all the other supply chain costs: Employees in the GW stores, rent/local council rates for GW stores, day-to-day expenses such as lighting and such for GW HQ etc. Labour costs (ie wages, health insurance, redundancy costs etc) are a fairly hefty chunk of the expense for example.

In other words, they aren't paying for the production costs - but everything else that goes into running a business.

Sure, we'd all love a price reduction, but in order to do that (from the analysis of the figures I've read over at Warseer) and to see reduced prices, we'd need to see GW cull their sales staff, close stores and generally shrink their presence in the physical bricks and mortar sense.

I've never been an advocate of firing people, and with the global recession going on, now is an even worse time to fire staff members to save money. So, unfortunately, I can't get behind the boycott on those grounds at all...

That said, I really don't agree with the prices going up to cover the expenses either. To me, it certainly seems like there *could* be ways of cutting day-to-day costs down without affecting productivity. Still, I'm no accountant, so I can't really make any substantive statement about the costs either...

Bottom line is that GW's financial concerns are of no consequence to the vast majority of their customers. They just don't care why prices are going up, only that they are and that this affects them negatively. If GW can't manage its retail outlets in a way that is efficient enough to be sufficiently profitable, that's their problem not their consumers.

That's why people will complain, but more importantly will reduce their spending or buy from discounted retailers. If GW stores offered special in-store only deals and offers on a regular and meaningful basis (like they used to waaaay back) then people might see more of a reason to shop there as they'd get something that they couldn't online. As it is, the company cannot only rely on people wanting to support their local stores in order to survive, especially not these days.

I imagine that most parents will be seeing expensive bits of pewter and metal as luxuries that can be cut back as budgets get squeezed.

Sorry but you don't see other companies putting their prices up in this harsh time - if anything their trying to get customers in to sell more.

GW has many options but here are two quick ones.

One
Raise prices, alienate gamers and generally piss off your customer base. run the risk of loosing them to other game systems and put people off even starting the hobby (never mind a vet starting a new project).

Two
Reduce or freeze prices, offer better priced starter kits that can only be bought in store (to avoid te eBay break up spree). this will get more new customers through the door. More vets will be incline to start new projects and overall your general sales go up thus you wont have to sack people.

If it's true that the product we're buying for £20 isn't worth £20 - the £20 is to cover costs of sales staff, store rent etc etc why not just reduce the price a little and aim to sell 2 of those boxes - that way you have two happy customers and rent eg is still covered? I think unless some amazing IG product comes out next year - GW will be seeing my debt card for the last time this year.

I think they're banking on 3: Raise prices, piss people off, but not enough that they'll stop buying things. Rely on the fact that people know that this hobby is expensive and that they just spend that little bit less on their other luxuries as they think its worth it.

I understand how this works for vets as they have a fair bit invested in the hobby. However for kids it puts a hell of a lot of pressure on the parents' budget and pushes them that much further towards saying no to the whole thing, seeing it as a fad that they'll soon forget and grow out of.

Honestly the price rise will not effect me directly all that much, I may not start those projects that have been brewing for the last few weeks, but I have more than enough stuff to be getting on with.

The major effect is likely to be on newbies getting into the hobby, with less newbies GW will not survive making wargaming even more of a niche hobby than it is at the mo and less opponants for me to play in 10 years time...

Ultimatly I think GW's attitude of recruit kids and then burn them out wash rinse and repeat his been biting them in the arse ever since the secondary market through ebay etc came into play.

I feel sorry for mike as well, thanks for the heads up though mate will help me plan, its just a shame that the hard work of the current staff is tarnished sales wise by the company put up the prices. GW can claim the current finacial crisis is its reason or give another excuse but quite frankly i dont buy it.Myself along with many others have noticed since lord of the rings was introduced the prices have increased int he other games very rapidly. I'm abit confuzzled about all this due mainly to the lack of any information about what is actually changing price- and people immediately jumping to the conclusions that everything under the sun is going to increase in price dramatically. As soon as I have info on what prices are changing, I'll pass that on- but right now there does seem to be alot of guess work going on.

As for the empire greatswords- yeah, £25 per box is alot- however how much is it for 10 in metal currently? £15 for command, £12 for line troops... for a total of £27 for the ten with command, which is what you get in the plastic box, which also comes with various parts and the ability to have each model individual instead of having the same pose and model multiple times in a larger unit. Am I wrong there?

Yeah but thats not the point is it brian, its the cost of 10 plastic footmodels compared to a similiarly sized 10 plastic footmodels.
We all know once it hits plastics then the costs to produce are cheaper etc.

All i can put this down to is they arent going to sell that many of them so need to make sure they pay for themselves and using other cheaper plastics as loss leaders for the, by comparison, more expensive plastic models.

It comes down to perceived value if I buy 10 metal models I feel that I am getting something substantial for the cost, not so much with plastic.

While I do like the customisation offered by the plastics I also greatly appreciate the fact that metal models can be paint stripped. If I build/paint/play with my plastic models then thats it. Nobody wants them anymore. My metal models however can always be stripped and sold for a good price.

Metal models give me the chance of making money back if/when I change army yet again and sell them on ebay.

That reminds me...anyone tried stripping plastic models- I heard detol works.... need to get some and try it

i think we can all agree im the biggest magpie for the new shiny thing... in the past ive never worried about the price, ive jus got what i wanted if i could afford it, however times change in the current climate im going to be shopping around for the best deal, ie 3 valks for 75 rather than 100ish, thats not to say i wont be buying from the shop anymore, if im going past and i want something sure, i dont mind paying that bit extra for the atmosphere etc etc,
