we do. they are called battleforces/battalions or army deals or the such. they will save you about 15% minimum. like wise the new starter set for 40k is better than everything that has every been produced and is about £200 worth of stuff for £40. however we also offer them through indepentant stores/internet - i will cover that in a sec.

this i thing is the key. at the end of the day to gamesworkshop seeling stuff through the store or independants doesnt make too much of a difference. the trade stores have to buy them at the same price the retail stores do - sure the retial stores get a bigger return for GW when they are sold but that also has to cover the cost of the store and everything that goes along with it. when the prices go up they will go up for both sections and so will the overall profit to GW. as it happends retail is in a little bit of growth, trade is in a lot of growth and alot stronger poistion.

so why have stores at all? indeed why are they planning to open more? i think it is the stuff that the store offers which you cant get anywhere else that makes them important. tovets this means hobby lessons, painting space, vets nights borrowing stuff lol its also intro games, general hobby chat etc and that is what you are paying for when you pay that little bit extra in store.

on a completly different subject the pirce rise. alot of people are complaining before they actually know what is going to happen, which is strange but not unpredicted. all we know for certain is metal is changing - they ae getting rid of the bands system for blisters and some models will increase a little in price some will decrease a little most will stay the same. we some plastic box sets will go up a band, ie a few pounds ie £12 becomes 15 for 10 models 15 becomes 18 for 10 elite models 18 becomes 20 for 16-20 models. this is by no means confirmed and some people i have spoken to within the company dont even think as much as that will happen. so lets all just wait an see hey?

as an aside no member of staff within games workshop took a pay rise this year as it was a choice between no pay rise across the board or start culling some jobs.

What you haven't addressed is the re-packaging:

With Orks it went from £18 for 16 models (£1.125 each) to £12 for 11 (£1.09 each) with new bitz added. Fine. Everyone's happy.

With Guard it went from £18 for 20 models (90p each!) to £12 for 10 (£1.20 each!) with no new bits. Not so fine, Guard players feel ripped off.

I know that GW increases the price of a few items every year, and this bring the usual responce from most forums across the net but the Greatsword box has produced an entirely new level of outspoken indignation. Greatswords are not equal to Terminators in their relative games but them seem to be in the same price bracket (albeit for twice as many models - you still need two boxes for a really viable unit). I don't see how HQ can really believe they will sell at that price. It seems naive, to say the least.

likewise i dont agree with the price of greatswords

and i always keep my tin hat handy comes with the uniform, standerd issue.

however i did agree that not selling stuff in store only hinders them but pointed out why GW dont
i merely pointed out we are not the only company increasing prices though i dont belive there are that many who make a big deal about telling their customer base they are going to do so in x amount of time
and i neither disagreed or agreed with the price range merely stated i wouldnt be waiting to see what it actually was

Unfortunately this is a sign of the times, Anyone who is not at risk of redundancy in these times should count themselves fortunate.

True, the extra value that you get when you go to the store is what people like and so they go there. However when it comes to buying stuff they often look online where its cheaper, especially for a big purchase where the savings are reasonably significant. Also, many people see the store experience as part of what they pay GW for their models anyway, so will happily go into the store and then have no problem with buying online for as cheap as possible.

What I'm talking about are offers only available in stores and not online retailers. At the moment GW have themselves created a problem for their own retail arm by setting up direct competition online, when it comes to price, the stores can't compete.

You have to rely on impulse purchases, the "must have it now" mentality, unwillingness to dick about on a computer and a sense of customer loyalty in order to keep sales ticking over, the same as any high street retailer. It works, but as people's pockets are lighter and kids/parents get progressively more internet savvy then the internet is going to keep taking more business. When it comes down to it, self-interest is a powerful force. Once someone gets 25% off online, they're unlikely to drop large wads of cash in-store again. Its just too tempting to save £30, £50 next time you buy a new army.

While high street retailers offer sales and in-store exclusives/deals to tempt customers in, GW refuse to give their stores a price advantage or have sales and offers better than online competitors. Seems crazy to me and price rises, no matter how small, just give people that little more encouragement to shop around. They're screwing their own stores IMO.

I had to take a 5% pay cut or loose my job and I know alot of people haven't had pay raises etc. Just how things are.

Well it is and it isn't. Look at the PC gaming world - games never really come out at full RRP as they all want you through the door and many stores offer discounts and point cards. Clothes stores are making a smaller mark up and offering huge sales. One area that isn't is hobbies. I was in hobby craft the other day and besides the OOP stock there wasn't much for sale items.

When these first came out I loved them untill you notice after a price raise or two battle forces go up as well. EG the new IG one is priced at around £55. for less models (but because of the new price inceases it makes them look better). Same with other forces. Poor dark eldar players only get 5 bikes, a raider and 20 men.

What I was meaning was starter packs - I bought a chaos army force for £50 and it came with £80 worth of goods - and I'm not talking a battle force worth - I got a HQ choice, some troops and some terminators - all different types. they had them for loads of armies back then (hell even harlies when they were their own army!)

The starter kits are a god send I admit - I have nothing against GW releasing them as they should be able to provide a good basis for a noobie to build their armies (just wish it was summat other than gobbo's and dwarves for the WFB )

Here is some thing intresting - Can the store bet a price for a bulk purchase? IE I wish to purchase 5 chimera's at some point this year (prob around sept) now I know a internet store can offer me 30% off RRP (which has gone up to £20 from £18 - baa) - can a GW high street store compete with that?

If it means that the store has to take payment for vets nights I really honestly wouldn't mind. I'm using GW's tables - some times their terrain (if it's not necromunda ) and TBH i would expect it. If store are having issues with over heads etc wouldn't this be an option (rather than pirce increases on the general stock).

I think the problem on the prices rise decision comes from GW head office thinking they still have a monopoly on the war gaming industry, with new games like warmachine and hordes it should be pretty evident that they now have competition and need t market more effectivly to keep people interested and stop them walking off to play another game. I have to laugh when people asks why have stores at all, with a game like this you have to have stores its party of the hobby in my eyes. I met most of my close friends playing GW games and without the store that wouldnt have happend, without the store it is quite possible that flame on, chosen, hired guns etc would not exist at all. Kinda the cheers effect you go where everyone knows your name lol. I try to go in and buy what i need in manchester when i get home, books have become a larger part of my shopping list and they never seem to go up in price so there is hope, i was alramed to see the lack of blisters ont he shelf however and having to order things over the net because the store does not have it in really doesnt help matters.

Actually you don't need company owned stores at all. The main game I now play, Flames of War, has a big fat 0 stores run by the manufacturer in the UK. They also compete in a market where many other manufacturers make models for the units used in their rules. I but all my FoW stuff online from Maelstrom or at conventions from traders. Battlefront appear to be doing pretty well from all this too.

Getting games is harder than popping into GW, but I can play at MAWS or at my house. So, a successful company doesn't necessarily need the store to get my dollar.In fact the main reason GW have stopped getting mine right now is the rules, but that's a minor issue to most GW customers compared to price.

How does GW manage in America where large swathes of the country don't have a GW shop within driving distance? Why are Hordes and Warmachine popular without Rackham opening shops? Independent retailers and gaming clubs provide gaming space and stock as does the internet and people's houses. That's what they'd do without GW stores in this country too, there's just be less of them.

GW's UK retail network is significant and will have done a vast amount to make them the giant of fantasy wargaming in this country. They are convenient, safe and give most of its UK customers a place to game, especially kids who probable wouldn't go to gaming clubs. If GW got rid of its stores it would lose a fair degree of turnover too as a big part of GW wargaming is the easy access to opponents. However they're not essential to a wargaming company.

i have to dissagree there i think the stores are the reason why of all the games out there GW games have come out on top. Playing in your own basement or gaming club is all well and good if you already know enough people that play the game and want to play regular. Where as with GW shops anyone can walk in and get a game of some kind, and as it is a prime outlet for the games themselves your pretty much sure to bump into someone who plays.
As for the popularity of Warmachine and Hordes well in manchester centre i think Fanboy 3 can be given some of the credit for that as they run the tournements and gaming nights for them. Independant stores are good for areas of which opening a GW store would not be finacially profitable but where people can choose from the many different games to play. Where as GW stores really have to be central and in areas of accesability. For one example ive seen alot of independent gaming stores around the country and yet the only store with total accesability for disabled people has been GW stores. However the price rise in question i feel would be more wisely targeted to the LOTR range rathe than the other existing ranges due to the fact they plan to market them alot this year (with war of the ring) and that LOTR has been shown to be one of the prime faults as to why GW began to loose money.

My point was that if the GW balkance sheet started to nosedive they could cut the stores and downsize to save cash while still remaining viable, not that stores haven't helped to make them successful. A large part of what has made GW so successful is down to the stores and the ease of finding opponents, but if they had to they could close them and still survive. They already closed some unprofitable ones in the last year or two.

also, you have to remember that the stores are as much marketing as retail. even if the operate as a loss leader/breaking even. Vets nights, GD, GT etc all help drive sales..even if they are with the online retailers. Campaigns drive sales (eg my necromunda and BB gear). seeing a nice conversion can lead to increased spending over the basic needs/wants.

If GW are anything like the lighting industry for costings etc. the price they sell to independants is already making the desired profit that head office/pen pushers want.

What Mike said about battleforces is true. when they first came out, they were GW's new sale stock, but to offer them to independants too in a market flush with discounters rids the stores of a unique selling point. £50 battleforce from store (adding travel costs to get to the store) or £40 battleforce online (generally delivered free)

the other thing that hasn't done the stores much good is the lack of specialist games releases. the next SG boxed release used to be a major source of store income as pretty much every gamer bought a copy.

now it seems to be just middle earth this or that. Its not making me want to spend my cash as the game itself hasn't grabbed me.

release something like Space hulk or Gorkamorka and i'd be one of the first in the queue. (am i right in thinking independants can't order SG stuff? not seen much on online stores) they were ace stand-alone games that got people into other armies.

I totally agree with the specialist games comment. Because the store has down sized and shelf space is valuble the seem not to have any for sale (bar the odd BB boxset). I hear that spacehulk is making a come back and I'm not suprised with the lovely plastic models they make but how but will it cost and will the rules to any different?

Not meaning to dwell ont he subject but i still see LOTR as part of the problem, when they came out and the film was in cinemas they sold loads, however the people at GW used the figures of when the film was at its hight and projected that sales would continue, to put it in a short way they didnt. I honestly think most of the money they made when LOTR was out was due to the merchendise factor if anything and now the only people who play are mostly people who played wargames befor the film came out. Yet they(GW) still have to pay for having the rights to make the game and time will tell as i predict they will again make a killing when the hobbit comes out but lets hope they learned their lesson on profits from such occurences. you guys may think im jumping the gun but this is just general observation from the time ive been playing. the prices never went up that much until LOTR was introduced,maybee its coincidence maybee its not i dont know.

so if your buying it from trade stores you get it that 30% cheaper or whatever because they have bought for set amount and GW have made X profit. if you buy it from the store you pay abit extra, that bit pays for the extra costs for GW in the store and staff and they still make X profit. if in the store we start offering the same discount sure we make our own figures look better but we are also cutting into GW's profit margin.

at the end of the day more people are heading over to internet stores ie trade accounts. this is shown in trades vast increase in growth this year as opposed to retails. and one of 2 things can happen

1. GW can decide screw stores screw the gamers the stores arnt making us as much money lets have just trade.
2. GW suck it up, offset trades improvment by retails loss and keep the stores open anyway

what would you choose?

as an aside plans are already well underway to open a significant amount of new stores in the country over the next year or two. hence the mass management recruitment drive that is ongoing at the moment.

though if you do wanna see the reall perform in the GW arsenal you should really check out how black library are perfomring this year. man their figures are pretty unreal.

Thats a shame as I remember when stores use to offer a buy 3 get the 3rd half price discount on items such as tanks etc. I think to recover it's losses from Lotr it's forgotten what made the company fun for the customers.

Thats a shame as I remember when stores use to offer a buy 3 get the 3rd half price discount on items such as tanks etc. I think to recover it's losses from Lotr it's forgotten what made the company fun for the customers.

I remember a long, long, time ago that there was a voucher in White Dwarf for a one day sale at GW Manchester (back when it was *huge*). Buy two of anything and you`d get a third one free. I went down and there was a queue of what must`ve been several hundred people snaking out of the door and down the street. Due to the time spent waiting and the fact that the offer was a pretty good one my dad got out his wallet and I walked away with several new boxed games and a pile of figures. Must`ve been a good £200 worth of stuff. Other people looked to be doing the same. They must have easily made a good few months worth of sales that day.

I guess parents love sales.

You have people who will spend their month's or year's budget in one day- the store would have a GREAT day- but the rest of the week/month/year would end up suffering... and thats assuming everything was in stock-

and hell...what do you do for the poor sods who miss it? or get annoyed because what they want isn't in stock?
I see it doing more harm than good in the long run- which is probably why it stopped-
