This isn't entirely true. What most consider to be the main failing of LotR is that when it came out staff in stores just sat back and operated the till, and it was brill. So when the big hoo-hah ran out, most staff were left stood around wondering why they wasn't hitting target anymore, then there was a whole new scheme to retrain staff and get loads of new people into the Hobby in general, rather than just selling them a game and wishing them luck.

There was a profit warning last year, but this year GW is doing amazing. LotR is not to blame, it's the way GW handled it.

Also, I'd like to say, I kinds resent the fact you keep calling lotr a noobs game. I love lotr, and wotr is an amazing add on for it. You should try playing it some time.

Get into Epic, wilsonian. 3 Chimeras for £6ish. Beats the 40k price...

I used to get bugged by the price rises too, but 'value' is dependent on each person. To say the AoBR has no value, or more value than the price, depends widely on how much you like 40k.
Similarly, saying LotR has no value, a lot of value, depends on if you like/play it.

Dumping the prices solely on LotR just because you don't play it seems a bit narrow minded. I have no love for LotR, but it has brought in revenue that was spent on better plastic mould technology.

In short, if the product truly loses 'value' to you personally, you wouldn't buy it. GW knows that plastic crack addicts will keep paying regardless of whinging.

I've left 40k, and only rarely dabble in Warhammer, so my purchases have been few and far between admittedly on these core games that require large armies (both in physical size and numbers), so I can't seem to get as worked up about the hikes.
Epic wise, I bought Space Marines in bulk years before the re-release of Epic (Armageddon) so got them real cheap, I could build properly 6-8000pts.
Nids, I have a pile of 40k Nid bitz that fills a bucket.
Guard, this was a more expensive investment, true, you don't get the same amount of 'physical bulk' of plastic as the same money spent on a 40k army, the forgeworld models are nice and cheaper though.
I guess the ruleset has always drawn me to a game, and Epic is top of my list. The new 40k plastic Valkyrie is nice, but without a ruleset to play it in, I hesitate to buy one for painting alone (and would have no reason to buy more than one).

So I'd say 'value' is influences by decent rules. I'm willing to pay £3 per Epic Leman Russ because I know I'm really going to enjoy the gameplay.

Difference with Epic is a £12 inverstment in plastic (don't know if these are going up too) gets you somewhere north of 1000 points worth of stuff for most armies, and plenty of options. The cost is mostly in Tanks and Titans, but certainly prior to the last price rises (£30 Warlord from £20 was a bit cheeky, I still bought one though ) and even still these are pretty reasonable.

The cost of anything we have is totally relative to its relationship with us.

The cost of my current army would be very high if i didnt enjoy the games i have with them. (i did have 2 very fun games last night, really enjoyed getting back into playing.) If i had spent that money and found them to be no fun at all i would feel slightly put out.
Of course with models they do last as long as you want them to, if it makes you feel better compare it to a bad night out where you spend loads of money on drink etc and something ruins the night.
The cost of that night would seem very high indeed as no one like paying money to be miserable.
Like going to a GT spending all that money on hotels tickets armies etc and then playing 6 total nobjockeys! that would seem a total waste of money.

Aye, I know the story. It's you loss, bud, you'd love playing Guard in Epic- though from a modellers POV (as I've seen your 40k conversions) it can't compete with 28mm models.
