I just wanted to check something. Is it only large targets that count as monsters etc and cannot join units?

I was thinking about trying something with my Oldblood when i come up against an army i dont want him running around on his own in.

Essentially its adding him to my Skink Cohorts unit, (it would be awkward since i assume hes on the big 50mil bases and not the same 40mil the Krox are on) giving me roughly 16 Skinks, 2 Krox and the Carny Oldblood which would reach 3 Ranks at 7 wide.

Is that do-able or can he only rank up really with things on the larger infantry bases like Saurus?

Yes you can, In the rulebook it only states flying mounts cannot join units. It does not say anywhere (at least that I can find and if you can I apologise) that monstrous mounts cannot join units so a carnosaur or even a stegadon could join a unit of skinks or saurus.

i do know for a fact that only man-sized models can join skirmishers....

In the monsters section (page 58) of the rule book it says:
"Monsters always fight individually; they can never join other models to form a unit, except when they are ridden by a character."

In Characters (page 72) it states:
characters mounted on flying creatures cannot join unites. Characters mounted on chariots can only join unites of chariots...

so it states you can.... thats just pants! you could put a steg "with a character"(unless the steg counts as a chariot?) in a unit of saurus!

amazingly tho, you cant join a character to another: monster, single chariot, unit of flyer or another character!
(i broke that rule only a few weeks ago! lol Character & Character that is!)

But yeah, Multiple Stegs in units of Skinks with Kroxigors ploughing their way up the field might be fun

Means Skinks cause Terror (or at least anything charging them needs to test for it, i know they dont count as an outnumbering fear causer since its just the Krox/Steg that counts) instead of just fear with the Krox and the Steg gains Static Combat res and a nice Stand and shoot screen

My current list runs 2 units of 16 Skinks with 2 Krox. Could stick my Engine Steg in one and the Old Blood on a Carnosaur in the other lol. Thats of course if Stegs count as mounts sicne theres a full crew etc.

I'm reasonably sure that the large target can be picked out and targeted seerately from the unit it's in (regardless of if its the only model that can be seen or not).
If that's not the case though, if any part of the unit can be seen it can be shot at and you'd be able to hit the skinks even if you couldn't see them (just like killing models in a unit that you can only see one of)
