Well, I'm by no means an expert but since Gothic is a niche game for players who often play niche games like Epic/Bloodbowl which themselves are overshadowed by larger games like 40k/Fantasy which are themselves a niche in the wargaming community which is a niche hobby...
Meh, I just like saying niche, anyway.
The rules seem fine, but they look aimed at campaign play. In campaign play losing a Capital Ship, heck even a damaged Capital Ship can cause you problems for many future games to come. In campaign play therefore you play the missions cautiously and disengage if things get ropey- it is better to lose the battle, if conserving your force wins the campaign.
But playing a campaign in any wargame I've found is an illusionary goal, a mythical shangri-la that everything excitedly joins up for then vanishes.
So for 'pick-up and play' I think Gothic needs a few extra boundaries.
First, army lists- I reckon players should aim at both a 750pts Raiding Fleet and a 1500pts Battlefleet. Of course, the 750pts ships can be used for the 1500pts fleet making this not such an expensive task.
I say this because many of the raiding missions require one player to take half the pts of the other. So it's good to have both fleets designed and ready.
My other concern is that many of the missions define Game Length as 'Until one fleet is destroyed or disengages' which translates in 'pick up and play' as 'until both players are kicked out of the gaming establishment muttering they could have won with one more turn'.
For this reason I'd argue for 6 or 8 turns for missions such as Fleet Engagement decided before the game starts.
I think the reason most missions have this Game Length being endless is that in campaign games players are far less willing to lose most of their fleet in one vicious fight, and so are more willing to disengage early.
I've waffled on enough, anyone else had some insight into Gothic, or any house rules to add?
