Seagulls squawked and screeched as they laboured into the blue sky, disturbed from their scavenging by the sudden appearance of a band of hurrying buccaneers.

“Don’t let them little buggers take the bridge!” shouted Kommodore Deffgit as the crew of the Ogresun rushed towards the river, “I’ve got me best grog stashed in the west wall…” he muttered to himself more quietly before he continued in his usual, louder-than-necessary, tone “Larboard watch that way, Starboard watch with me.”

Several of the Ogresuns bickered on the way to the bridge but no more than harsh words were exchanged for the most part. Arrows skipped off the battlements of the south-eastern tower as Briney Duff pulled himself over the parapet. A startled Halfling Thief squeaked and fled over the rickety bridge into the south-western tower as the Orc Pirate loomed over him. A pair of arguing Kabin Grots followed Duff over the ramparts but their quarrelling erupted into an exchange of blows as soon as the were off the ladder!

As a herd of pigs snuffled and grunted across the bridge the Larboard watch gathered behind a barricade and lay in wait for them –the swirling inky green smoke of Hogbreff’s quickening enchantment still clung to the pirates like a morning mist. The porkers caught wind of the odorous Orcs and the thought better of approaching.

As Briney Duff trotted over the bridge Fagin Bulger, the diminutive thief, pinged off a couple of crossbow pistol bolts but they flew wide in his panic. Duff roared “I got ye now, chump!” and leapt from the end of the bridge, cutlasses flashing in the sunlight, and caught the Halfling’s sword-hand a glancing blow. The Orc left the thief in a crumpled heap, clutching his bloody arm and slid down the ladder to the west wall of the bridge.

There before him in the shadow of the wall was a rum barrel, badly hidden under a pile of dirty sail-cloth. He greedily snatched the cask up and turned to climb the ladder again. A hail of arrows arced in his direction but all missed and clattered off the stones around him, but then little Rob the Scout took carful aim – the bow string creaked slightly as he squinted down the length of his hunting arrow. At just the right moment he loosed the arrow and it hit Duff’s shoulder with a meaty thud. The pirate yelled in pain and dropped the cask! It seemed to fall in slow motion, taking an age to reach the foot of the ladder. When it finally did land it smashed on the stone buttressing and spilled its precious contents over the flagstones, from where it flowed into the gutter and down into the river.

Briney Duff’s cried of rage and anguish echoed across the city.

“Whatssat?” said Deffgit in the street below.

Crossed Bones and Crossed Swords

Rain trickled down Wyrdtoof’s neck as he wandered through the empty streets of Vercuso’s waterfront. He was a long way from the nearest Ogresun crew member, who were all scattered about the town around the Cod & Cutlass inn searching for loot and something to drink. He shifted his tricorn hat and pulled his boat-cloak tighter as he eyed the leaden sky with annoyance.

From somewhere in the direction of the inn a deep boom echoed down the narrow streets and the Shaman span round to face the source of the sound and froze. After a few seconds of motionless listening he was sure he heard shouting and the ring of swords clashing with swords. With one hand on his hat and his carved staff tucked under his other arm he sprinted down the alley towards the sounds of battle.

By the time he arrived at the inn he found the Ogresuns regrouping and attempting to form up into battle-lines. They were fighting the human pirates who called themselves the Gentlemen of the Inferno, which shouldn’t have surprise Wyrdtoof as the two crews had been drinking together just the night before and heated words were exchanged before they went their separate ways at dawn.

Pistols shots cracked and scattered plaster and wood-splinters forcing Barnacle Nog to duck and spoiling his aim. Handgun fire ricocheted off the cobbles as the pirates bands sprinted towards one another, shouting oaths and curses. A couple of the Gentlemen were caught in a side alley by three Ogresuns and given a sound knock on the head, while in the centre of the wide main street . Nog pulled himself up slid down the ladder from his first-floor vantage point and felled the pistoleer with a heavy boot to the poor man’s groin.

Wyrdtoof let loose his witchery and the cloudy tendrils of the spell wrapped themselves round the nearest Orc deckhands. The greenskined buccaneers slammed into the Inferno’s captain (The Honourable Cap'n One Eyed Willy, Esq.) and his cronies, Crab and Lobster. The Willy floored his opposite number, but the bilge rats either side of him sank like dinghies in a storm. The Orcs turned on Cap'n One Eyed Willy and grinned their toothy grins at him. Both planted a heavy clout on the captain’s head and he went down.

Deffgit roared with glee and charged into the fray, taking on the scurvy-riddled pirate First Mate, know as Stinky Pete. Pete saw the Kommodore bearing down on him and calmly discharged his pistol into the bearded Orc’s face. The ball missed anything vital but the shock of the impact dropped Deffgit to the ground; out cold with a blackened face.

Deffgit awoke a hour or more later in the bar of the Capstan, propped up in his favourite chair by the fire with a drink on the table in front of him. “Whassat?” he bawled, not quite sure of what was going on.

“Don’t worry mate,” said a reassuring voice “we got ye back to a safe harbour!” it was Salty Ogbad and he sat down opposite the Kommodore. “We won, by the by, them Gen’lemen hauled their wind soon after you checked out.” he continued with a chuckle.

The Cod and Cutlass Inn, Vercuso.

Hog and Bothered

The Catering Corp attacked the Cod and Cutlass inn while they were counting their loot. The Ogresuns defended aggressively and held off the half-sized halfwits.

“What’s that one?” said Barnacle Nog as he held up a small silver coin for Hogbreff Wyrdtoof the Shaman to examine.
“Um.. I think it’s a Khemrian sheckle.” said the Shaman dismissively.
“Oh.” said Nog and he bit the suspect coin experimentally. It seemed to pass muster and he threw it onto a pile of other random silver coins.

The Ogresuns were huddled together around a sea-chest, each grabbing a handful of gold and silver coins and industriously sorting them into piles of similar weight and type. The tallow candle flickered and went out and for the first time they realised it was well past dawn. Wyrdtoof yawned and stretched and rubbed his head. As the crew’s navigator and Shaman (and mainly because he could get past fifteen) it fell to him to do most of the actual counting and his head was sore.

“We should get this lot aboard before one o’ the other bands gets wind of it.” he said. The others nodded but didn’t seem willing to stop pawing through the glittering heap. Unlike normal Orcs they were obsessed with treasure – gold particularly – they could barely contain their avarice.

The Starboard watch stood guard in the upper story of the inn and the pie shop, crossbows at the ready but they mostly watched the division of the booty. The first they knew of the Halfling attack was when Throg was hit in the arm but a brightly painted arrow.

“What the duce?” said Dubloon Dreg as he gawped at his ship-mate for a few seconds. Then he gathered his wits and looked around. Two cheeky pink faces peered out from the top floor of the building opposite the pie shop. “On deck there: Halflings ahoy!” he yelled.

“Hide the loot!” cried Barnacle Nog and he scooped the carefully piled coins back into the chest higgledy-piggledy. Wyrdtoof groaned in dismay at the lost night’s work.

“You little gritz get up there and stop them a-shootin of us!” growled Kommodor Deffgit as arrows started raining down, particularly around him, from the top of the stone arches. The Kabin Grotz scampered away to find a ladder.

Blind Fug squinted down the bolt of his crossbow and squeezed the trigger: Gordo Rams-eye fell, clutching the bolt that was suddenly protruding from his chest. A few moments later, after some hurried re-drawing and reloading a second Halfling went down. Fug chuckled to himself and drew chalk tallies on his crossbow’s side.

Over in the pie shop’s attic Dubloon Dreg lost his temper with the diminutive assailants and ran roaring down the gang plank towards the grinning mugs of Bill and Ted. The Halflings laughed as they knew the Orc would not be able to reach their lofty perch, but Dreg had other plans: he turned and sprinted back along the gang plank then with a roar he leapt across the 30 foot gap between buildings to the house across the alley. Faygin Bolger, the Halfling thief who was hiding in that ruin was shocked to the core to see nearly 200 pounds of Orc Pirate sailing through the air towards him. He was less surprised to see the pirate disappear from view and plummet to the cobbles bellow!

The Kabin Grotz got halfway up the long walkway to the Catering Corp’s position when Bob, The Butcher of Dumplington, came waddling down to meet them. The Halfling Chef sent Stormy Trug tumbling off the walkway with a girly screem and Dirty Morgun followed when one of the Chef’s chums hit him with an arrow.

The pigs came squealing and snorting into the Cod and Cutlass and knocked poor Wyrdtoof off his feet. The porcine invaders mercilessly mauled the Shaman before the rest of the Ogresuns fell upon them with murderous intent and slaughtered three quarters of them.

“Take that an smoke it ye little zoggers!” called Deffgit and waved his boarding axe at the distant Halflings in jubilant celebration. Their assault was broken and they were falling back carrying the limp bodies of three or four of their mates.

“Hmmm” said Barnacle Nog, as he peered through the rain. He wasn’t quite sure of the best course of action; as first mate of the Ogresun command decisions were not normally left to him but with the Kommodore and Wyrdtoof bedridden he was next in line. “Hmmm” he said again. Ratmen darted along the city walls and scampered over gangplanks into the upper stories of ruined buildings nearby.

“Roight!” said Nog at last, “Scupper: you get that sack from the pier, the rest of you go get any loot to be had from the buildings before those Ratboyz nab it all.” Dubloon Dreg stood his ground and started shouting as the others jumped to their tasks but Nog just ignored the old fool.

Both watches splashed forward through the gathering puddles as a light shower of sling stones rattled and pinged of the cobbles around them. None of the Orcs paid the missiles much mind and none found their mark. Skaven may be renowned for their sneakyness but this lot (who called themselves The Nezumi) weren’t going to be celebrated for their shootyness!

Scupper Lug grabbed the bag of merchandise from the wooden jetty but didn’t hang around over the dark water for long – he’d seen too many shipmates pulled down into the murky depths by tentacle terrors!

The Skaven quickly secured the valuables from the two foremost houses and got themselves into defensive positions. A few of the Ogresuns climbed the nearest ladder (after a brief fight about who should go first!) but they soon realised that the Rats were too strongly dug-in for it to be worth the reward.

The rain got heavier and heavier as the Pirates withdrew in relatively good order and the Skaven did the same, both parties keeping a careful watch on the other as they went. Later that day Salty Ogbad started sneezing.

“It’s getting late Boyz, we don’t have time to hang around,” yelled Kommodore Deffgit “we have to get to the Sarky Cutter before they call last orders!” The dreadful concept of the inn closing before they could get a drink spurred the Ogresuns on with desperate vigour – they picked up their pace from a brisk walk to a rapid jog. As the band of Bretonnians appeared round the corner the pirates saw no need to slow down!

Arrows rattled off the cobbles around them (chiefly around the Kommodore!) as they ran. Wyrdtoof summoned the power of Mork (or possibly Gork) and thin tendrils of inky green smoke curled around the pirate crew.

A couple of deck hands paused to fire crossbows at the peasants armed with longbows, high on the stone wall above them: a bowman cried out in gratifying response and fell to the parapet clasping the dart protruding from his leg.

Barnacle Nog leapt forward, accompanied by Scupper Lug and the Goblins; together they clashed cutlasses with the Breton swords. The burly first mates’ bulging muscles and fearsome cutlass-work drew the full attention of the Bretonnians, but the other pirates ended up doing most of the actual damage. Scupper Lug clubbed a squire bearing the band’s colours to the ground, one of the enemy knights fell under a barrage of blows and the Goblins pounced on both – stiletto knives doing the dirty work.

The Kommodore got stuck in too, but he kept a weather-eye on the overall situation and held back the pirates when the knights sounded the retreat: It was more urgent to get to the pub than finish the foreign devils off!
