Guys, sorry to but in again but help is required.

For Childplays i have just finished my shiny new Soviet Assault Sapper army. I have played two games at the club (GIMPS) which have been my heaviest defeats in my 4 years of playing FOW.

I need to know now if my list is complete bobbins or if (hopefully) i just need some practice

HQ
2 understrength sapper platoons (15 stands each)
4 Flamethhrower teams
2 * 4 SU85
1 God of War( 4 122 Howiizers, 4 Ziz 3)
1 Understength Spetznaz platton (only 3 stands....i know, i know)

So far i have been up against a Stug company from S.O. and got hammered as my SU85's were unable to cope with 2 tigers, 10 Stugs (with tank riders), 3 Marders, Pioneers and Armoued Nef's. The terrain didnt help as it was pretty sparse and my huge infantry platoons were simply machine gunned by his armour once the SU85's were neutralised. Of course it didnt help that we ended up with one of the missions were i couldnt use the Spetznaz to infiltrate one of my platoons.

Last night i went up agaisnt a pioneer list from FE, which as a result meant i was up aginst 2 units pioneers, 3 Brumbars, 1 unit Pak 40's, armoured Nef's, Weapons platon, armoued cars, Tiger, AA. Attacking in Cauldron and again not able to use the Spetznaz infiltrate. Much the same as first game, as trained SU85'S with Hen and Chicks cant hack it against even 2 dug in Pak 40's. The problem is that with the SU85's my opponeent will always get the jump on me due to only being able to move 6" if i want to fire. Of course in the second game my dice were rubbish ( no complaints in first game) i.e assaulting objective, did everthing right pinned target, positioned right to minimise defensive fire, used sappers smoke bombs to get concealed, 5 shots hitting on 4's....pinned, broke off failed 4 out of 5 saves...

So far i have not been able to use the infiltrate from the sappers, which is probably a blessing as i dont want to rely too heavily on it, as when i do get to use it (in about 60% of the missions) i will have a platoon about " 16" from an objective before the game starts. (21 stands, of fearless trained sapper smg teams, with four flamethrowers, four Panzerfaust, a re-roll for the 1 i C, then another re-roll for Kommisar....and i get first turn). It is possible to get up to "8" away from objective before i take first turn but it will be difficult.

So guys, basically, is this list, complete and utter bobbins.....

don't know enough about FoW to be able to comment (only been playing since April myself).

The only thing I can think of would be to drop the all so small Spetnaz or beef them up entirely, but I am not a fan of small platoons unless they have a purpose (or are there to make up your overall PC).

I do like the way you are asking us for help there are 3 fow players on here none of us have been playing more than 18 months though

Ok, 1st thing I'd try is to get at least one of those sapper coys up to full strength. even with smoke pots you need to use QoQ to guarantee getting them into assault against pinned enemies and these guys seem all about the assaults.

Half spetsnaz is fine, just use them as recon only and use cautious movement to protect them as they lift gtg while hammering dug in infantry. Remember their recon move can get them forward 12" if you stay mounted, they're pretty good at avoiding nasty ambushes especially as most of your stuff is only moving 6" a turn normally.

Not sure on the SU-85s, they can't get into a long range slugging match with German armour. They can give it out but can't take it. I mostly use mine from a bit further back or from in cover to reduce hits. They're good assault guns, 8 of them should do over PaK40s at short range as long as you lift their gone to ground. Even moving you should get a gun or two, standing still you should nail 3-4 guns. Might be best using them as assault guns to take out HMGs and anything that can do over your infantry as they'll be doing the heavy lifting rather than as pure tank-hunters.

T-34/85s can tangle with German tanks if you pick your battles but they're expensive and your flamethrowers fllowed by a sapper assault is still probably
your best bet. Add in some faustniki and you should muller tanks with infantry assault after flaethrowers have reduced the defensive fire.

Not sure how you would alter stuff and keep 6 platoons though.

@Anathema: the problem is that to increase a platoon by 7 teams costs an extra 180 points. The most viable option is a large unit of t34/85. but this would stop me from having 6 platoons and also based on my knowledge of what the german players are taking (6 are from the Gimps, i can make an educated guess of what Alex and Lee are taking and Sam Street and Peter Entwistle) armour 7 wont cut it either, as against panthers your just as well off with SU85's.

To be honest the best counter soviets have against panthers are infantry, our tanks don't do too well. It was interesting watching jimmys panthers back away from my royal engineers last time we played. Pioneer types are a heavy tanks nightmare, medium tanks are their dream.
