Ok so following on from the warhammer quest thread (which we shall still be playing at some stage I'm sure!).

Who wants to play, and can reasonably regularly make, a warhammer flavoured game of DnD.

Viktor has said he can host on friday, saturday or sunday evenings.

I shall be the Dungeon Master and I'm pretty sure that there are pretty close translations to all of the current fantasy races (and more) covered.

You would pick both a race and a "class" (and more often than not a sort of speciality within that class).

e.g. you can be an elf, that elf can choose then to be a ranger, that ranger can choose to either be a bow armed ranger or a melee fighter etc.

So say you wanted to be a warrior priest, you'd probably choose a human, cleric or warlord depending on how up close and personal you wanted to smite your enemies and if you wanted it to be prayers to sigmar that healed your allies or your stirring inspirational speaches.

Dwarf trollslayers, high elf (eladrin in DnD) mages, halfling rogues, even half orc barbarians and lizardmen are covered (dragonborn!).

The only real stipulation in my campaigns are that your characters are all basically "good" (anti-heros are ok if you feel confident enough roleplaying one though). That not only makes it much easier to come up with reasons for you all to go off adventuring but more importantly reasons for you to go off adventuring WITH each other (e.g. paladins tend to get uppity when they see their friends start murdering innocent people and the group dynamic generally goes downhill pretty quickly from there!).

I'm fairly confident I know enough about the warhammer world setting that I can plan some realistic adventure hooks. You'll all have to expand on your definitions of "orc" or "skeleton" etc. as obviously there are more than a couple of different levels of each within what the Orc and goblin army book would tell us (you'll find that some zombies are pretty bad-ass for example!).

You can also let me know what type of level you'd like to start out on, I'd probably reccommend pretty early levels as your all new.

Lv1 characters are basically at the level of being able to swing a sword/whatever around and will have basic equipment, they'll be able to do a couple of moves "at-will" (for example a mage will have a choice of such stables as "magic missile" etc.), they'll have one more that they can do once per "encounter" (lightning strike), and one that they can only manage once per "day" (like a big fireball or something).

Obviously these are only the basic game mechanics and if at any time you want your character to jump up on a table, jump over the enemies sword as it slashes under you while back flipping over them and skewering them from behind then you only need to tell me that's what your attempting and it's my job to craft that into some kind of "skill" check. That particular example would be "acrobatics" and the better your character is at that skill the more likely he is to be able to pull it off (though that wouldn't be an easy one, you'd get a big bonus to your to hit roll or damage if you pulled it off.)

Anyway, hope that gives you a little bit of flavour for hopefully what this'll be about!

Also - If people could let me know what type of warhammer fantasy character they're interested in playing then I can suggest an appropriate DnD race and class.

Ok, well an ogre bull is a little more tricky but I think the general theme can be captured by playing a "goliath" yeah. Big, strong and not particularly smart. We can use that as a rule template and re-fluff it. From what I remember from reading the novel set in ogre kingdoms (wild kingdom was it?) ogres aren't necessarily stupid, just introspective and obviously a different value system .

You'd then have to decide on what type of class you'd want to be. Assuming standard ogre type would mean your probably thinking of being a melee combatant

You could easily be one of two things, a striker (damage dealer) or a defender (tank if we want to use mmorpg speak).

Barbarian would seem to fit for the striker role, running at people with your long legs and cleaving them in two with a massive great weapon.

For the defender probably one of the fighter sub-types that doesn't wear a lot of armour - they rely more on shrugging off wounds than deflecting them would fit quite well?

Those are just options obviously, if you had something in mind I'm sure we can find something to fit.

Not really, 4th ed is a lot simpler than 3rd ed. As long as I know what's going on there's not a problem. You tell me what you character wants to do, I'll tell you what you need to roll to achieve it. Esp as this is hopefully going to be more a roleplay group.

It's going to be same place and same time as for Warhammer Quest (we'll give it a try later on).
So at my place, Rusholme/Mosside area, on late afternoon/early evening on either friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Also I hope you understand that I don't have the specific models for all of the enemies that your likely to have to face while adventuring (there are books full of them!) so there may be a certain amount of proxy where the monsters are concerned - depending on how much this bothers people will determine how much I do it and therefore the variety of enemies you'll face. (less proxy = less variety obv)

How much the first session is more an introduction to the game and creating your own characters is up to you guys.
The first session can either be me running you all through the character creation process - or you can give me as much information about the type of character you want to play as possible and I'll generate all the characters for you and then the first session can be more active. PLEASE GIVE OPINIONS ON THIS.

I'll give you a basic run down of the combat mechanic below so you have an idea of how things work though. e.g.

Your party is exploring an abandoned mine, you turn a corner and the corridor expands out in front of you into a wider cave, in front of you there is a table dimly lit by an oil lamp. Seated around it are a group of leather clad orcs noisely eating a partially cooked boar. One of them looks up in alarm and grunts out a warning to his mates, they spring from their stools and draw their weapons....

The call to "roll initiative" is the cue that things have gone from story mode to combat mode. I will draw out a birds eye view of the area you are currently in on a gridded "battle mat" on the table in front of us all. Placing minatures to represent the monsters and placing your minatures on the board to show where you are when the action starts. To decide who acts first each player will roll a d20 and add their initiative value (a score primarily based on your level and dexterity). The monsters do the same. Whoever has the highest goes first etc. etc. This sets the order of turns for the following combat (I'll have written them down so will remind you when its your turn to go). During your turn you have 3 actions. These are a "standard" action (generally an attack of some sort), a "move" action (guess what you do with that!) and a "minor" action (things like drawing a weapon etc.). You can do these in any order you want (so you can draw your sword, then move over to an orc and attack it, or cast a spell, move over to hide behind some nearby crates and then not bother with your minor action etc etc.).

When making an attack your character will have a choice of a certain number of "powers" that they can use (this number increases with level so to start with you'll only have to choose between about 4 so not very complicated, don't worry).

There are generally 3 different types of attack power.

1) At Will powers. The weakest of your attacks, however there is no limit to how often you can use them.
2) Encounter powers. Your medium level attacks, these can be used once per fight (or once per "encounter")

Say I wanted to hit an orc with my sword, firstly I'd move over next to it using my move action, each square on the battle mat represents one point of movement.
There will be an "At will" power that lets me do a basic attack as a standard action. On my character sheet I will have a "To hit" modifier, (depending on your level, your weapon, your statistics etc. - this number is pretty static so once you've worked it out once you wont have to again until you level up or something so don't worry about it being complicated, I'll work it out for you), basically it represents how good your character is with their sword. You then roll a d20 and add your to hit modifier. You'll then tell me your score and I compare it to my monsters armour class, if you equal my armour value I'll tell you you've successfully landed the blow, if not then I'll tell you you've missed.

Assuming you've hit, you then look at the power you used to see what damage it does on a hit. For hitting someone with your weapon it'll generally say something like

"1[W] + strength"

The 1[W] part refers to the type of weapon your using e.g. a dagger will do d4 damage, a longsword, d8 damage and a two handed axe may do 1d12 for example. the 1[W] means 1xweapon damage. 2[W] would mean 2 x weapon damage etc. etc.

The "+ strength" bit means that the stronger your character is the more damage the attack does so you add your strength modifier (written down on your character sheet) to the damage you do.

(for a spell it'd be even easier and say something like "1d8 + intelligence")

Again, once you've worked this bonus damage number out once it's pretty static and one type of character will generally be using the same weapon and the same modifiers for all of their attacks so even though it sounds complicated its actually very simple once you've done it once. Promise!

Also I hope you understand that I don't have the specific models for all of the enemies that your likely to have to face while adventuring (there are books full of them!) so there may be a certain amount of proxy where the monsters are concerned - depending on how much this bothers people will determine how much I do it and therefore the variety of enemies you'll face. How long does a gaming session usually last for? Fridays are pretty much out of the question for me, due to work and seeing the missus. Saturdays are a bit more flexibile, i have most afternoons free from around 2/3pm, would need to be home around 6/7pm. Sundays i potentially could do but there a little more awkward as Saturday night is usually part night and i dont like to drive the day after.

How much the first session is more an introduction to the game and creating your own characters is up to you guys.

The longer a session the more you get done, its not like fantasy where you have a game and finish in 2 hours and then start another game, it's an ongoing story. You'd generally stop a session after an encounter (certainly not in the middle of one). It wouldn't be worth playing for less than 2 hours (as after everyone got there eat, talked for a bit etc. etc. you'd have little time left for anything decent, 3'd be ok - especially if people were on time and had eaten already etc., 4+ even better. But while we're just getting started if we could do 3 hours that'd be fine.

Saturday night is usually part night and i dont like to drive the day after.

Ok...I'm having a look at my schedule (and at other people's as well).
This weekend I'm in London, on 5th December there is the naval battle at the Mill (plus the BB tournament). Then on 22nd I'm going back home and won't be back until 7th January.
So there are two choices: Friday 4th (but Zoglug -Andy, isn't it?- may have some problem), giving us 3 weeks before the break. Or the following weekend (with Saturday 12th as a preferred choice), which just gives us 2 weeks before the break.
Or, third choice, starting on the 8th-10th January weekend...
Opinions, people?
I personally prefer for the first section to be a characters' creation section. Going through the whole proedure can surely help us familiarise with stats and their meaning, right?
After that we might take Sunday eves (5-6, maybe?) as a default.

Friday the 4th is one Friday i could potentially do! With me being at the BB tourney, my Girlfriend is having a girly weekend. I dont get home from work until 6ish though. So its like to be around 7pm before i get anywhere.

It should then give us 3 weeks to pick up on the basics as Jonny said and produce our character backgrounds. On the 12th, if we all meet then, i really need to be home by 7ish, because its my cousin's bday party. After xmas Sunday's at 5/6pm defo sound like a winner to me!
