What kind of things do we need to decide on for our characters? as I've got a bit of an idea for mine but not sure how game releveant it is.

Everything can be game relevant . Your guys a barbarian so you'll likely want to use a two handed weapon (they better with them) so as a dwarf its probably a choice between a type of great axe or a type of great hammer? If everyone can have a think about their character background and why they're started the life of an adventurer (can be as cheesy and cliched as you like - in fact that often makes my job easier lol!) Think about your potential family/friends, has your character already made some enemies along their way? Who taught you what you currently know? Which god do you have greatest faith in? Also what alignment is your character?

Alignment is overall on a compas system. i.e. North is good, south is evil, west is lawful, east is chaotic. The mid point is neutral or unaligned.

A good character will generally try and be helpful to those around them and act unselfishly most of the time etc.
An evil character is simply out for themselves and screw everyone else (some campaigns allow evil player characters, my level of GM ability currently does not!)
Neutral character: one who neither tends towards good or evil actions. A true neutral character is very hard and also quite boring to play. e.g. your character is just about to die, their final words are "tell my wife, I said hello". Neutral should be a temporary alignment as your decisions will quickly change your alignment.
Lawful: You believe the best ends are always met with strict adherence to the law.
Chaotic: You have no time for rules and regulations, preferring to let your own moral compass shape your actions.

Alignment is just supposed to help you think about how your character would react in any situation. It doesn't force you into one action over another or play any mechanical part in the game, however if you consistantly decide against your alignment the GM will probably end up changing it.

Your characters name.
Which God they most identify with (Sigma, ulric, vaul etc etc).
You'll all be starting in a village, probably in the border princes. Why is your character there (esp relevant for those of you who aren't human!), name a couple of people you know in the village and their relationship to you, any past mementous moments? Made any enemies already?

I'll be getting you to identify a pre-existing relationship/interaction your character (PC) has with one of the other characters (this must be agreed on by them). e.g. old friend, body guard, mentor, brother etc etc. This is a postive relationship. Everyone must have a different one (i.e. andy can say viktor is his body guard, viktor comes up with something other than "andy is my charge" and would say, "zoglug is an old friend from a privious mercenary group we were both in" or whatever).

I'll also be getting you to identify a source of minor tension between your PC and another PC (you get frustrated that they always leap before they look, you disagree about a minor point in theology etc.)

None of these things (apart from the name!) are strictly necessary to the game but they help flesh out your characters and give you ideas for how your characters are likely to react in situations.

Befriended Ogre whilst exploring………………Ogre saved his life whilst fighting……………..and the pair have explored since. Talk of……………….has encouraged the pair to meet a group of adventurers to seek…………………… hence why they have ended up in the Border Princes

From a small clan that never really fit in with the larger dwarf society living in the mountains outside the main hold due to his barbarian lifestyle and very cold homeland he wears little clothing and no armour. quite a muscular dwarf he wields a large hammer passed down from his father who has retired from battle and works as the village blacksmith.

Decided to leave home for a few years to travel, find fame and fortune which will bring honour to his clan and earn him greater respect and status within it. Not looking for death in battle but not afraid of it happening. Always keen to hammer some greenskins

Travelled to (wherever we start) to see a local dwarf who he helped fend off some skaven from a merchants caravan a few years ago. Spent the last few days getting reacquainted (drinking heavily in the local tavern) and becoming rather friendly with the local barmaid.

Drinks a lot but it takes a heck of a lot to get him drunk.

Obviously distrusts elves and thinks little of most of them and other races until they’ve proved themselves at the bar or on the battlefield. Though does have a fondness for human women who have a bit of meat on them.

You can have the bow and cloak which won't be magical yet but can start to display magical properties later on? cool, but why s he never being allowed to return? And I imagine that being exiled from his home (although a cool roleplay thing) may have required more than just him wanting to have an explore? Maybe he's been wrongfully accused of something (some dark elf trickery perhaps?) and is on a quest to clear his name?

Here's my rubbish efforts. Don't really know how much exposition will take place throughout a campaign so don't know how much to leave out.

Name: Ludwig
God: Sigmar
Alignment: Lawful Good
Equipment: Two Hammers

Background: Ludwig is a member of the House of Ludwig, a family of lesser nobles who have, for centuries, devoted themselves to the Church of Sigmar, training it's members to become warrior priests. It is a general consensus among the clergy of the Church that the House of Ludwig is the most unreliable, incompetent and downright useless organisation since the Twin-Tailed Comet tore the skies all those years ago. All of its patriarchs have been mad as hatters and are renowned for sending their family members on pointless missions, against immeasurable odds, under-equipped, alone and far from home. House Ludwig's casualty reports make horrific reading.

And so this is where we find our own Ludwig, sent with a dozen others on some crackpot errand, to places in the world where the light of Sigmar does not shine. Rumour has it that the current head of the house simply shut his eyes and stabbed pins into a map, sending his underlings to wherever they landed. Lies, obviously, but Ludwig's landed somewhere in the Border Princes.

The normally reserved, dogmatic Ludwig, ever seeking to toe the line and not make waves, will no doubt be out of his depth as he tries to convert the heathen masses of this horrible land. Every soul counts, and if only one person is introduced to the ways of Sigmar during this quest it will all have been a waste of time. Much like many of the quests undertaken by the Ludwigs of the land.

Who does he know in the town?: A bumbling old priest called Ludwig (surprisingly), once Ludwig's old scriptures lecturer. Our Ludwig is his replacement.

Who is an old friend?: Durak Grundson is a fellow of few talents, but a very useful few they are. The House of Ludwig is not above contracting mercenaries and Durak is one of the best. He and Ludwig have fought against ghouls in the graveyard and enjoyed a rather dangerous experience during the incident known as 'Merenghi Fantana's Rise to Power'.

A source of tension?: Viktor's ogre was once paid protection money by a man wanted by the Church of Sigmar on suspicion of heresy. The matter was eventually settled after the man was found not guilty, but the tension is still there.
