We're only using pit fighters and normal equipment so far Lee, so whips aren't an option. Introducing other races and their kit will certainly raise lots of issues.

In terms of strikes first however, I don't forsee any major issues. We'd just work it out as we went along.

I've been drawing up some rules for multi-player pit fights. They might not be any good as they're still a prototype.

Set Up

Pit fighters roll of to determine set up order.
All must set up no further than 5" from the centre.
To determine who goes first, roll a d6 and add your pit fighter's initiative. This represents your fighter seizing the moment.
Take turns order of highest to lowest dice roll.

Actions

Treat the fight using the standard Mordheim game mechanics with the following exception:
Fighters may sacrifice their turn to work the crowd. They may not do anything, and cannot be engaged in combat, but may add a crowd point in the same manner as 'Are You Not Entertained?'

Terrain

D3-1 mud pits
D3-1 pit traps
1 obstacle

Crowd Points

Crowd points may be accumulated by the following:

+1 per combat
+1 per critical
+1 per stun
+1 per 'Are You Not Entertained?'

Multi-opponent pit fights are more dangerous and as such please the bloodthirsty crowds more.

Including Beasts

Tigers, fiends from the deep and other nightmarish creatures are not an uncommon sight in the pits. Sometimes the baying crowds can only be pleased by a tentacled, razor-skinned monster squeezing off somebody's head like a champagne cork. Players (or a cunning Championship promoter) may choose to include beasts in their multiplayer pit fight games. Here are some examples:

Tiger - same profile as warhound (one tiger per competitor)
Black Pegasus - Same profile as black pegasus (one only in games with 4+ pit fighters)
Chaos Spawn - Same profile as chaos spawn (one only in games with 3+ pit fighters)

Feel free to invent your own monsters and let your imagination run wild.

Deployment of Beasts

Black pegasus and spawn (and other large beasts) to be deployed at the centre of the arena.

Tigers to be deployed 5" from the centre. Roll a scatter dice to determine which direction they appear from. They may even start within 1" of a pit fighter, representing them leaping out from trap doors or hidden doorways.

Ideally a neutral party will control the beasts, however if none are available then they will charge the closest pit fighter, rolling off if two or more are equidistant. If a pit fighter is knocked down or stunned then tigers will charge them if not already in combat, even if the downed fighter is not the closest model. This represents their natural hunting instincts.

In fights containing beasts, pit fighters may still attack each other.

Victory Conditions

Different victory conditions may be set. These may be things such as last man standing, team deathmatch, working together to kill a mammoth beast etc. The players' imagination is the limit.

In terms of experience, fighters will be rewarded with the following at the end of the game:

+1 exp for winning
+1 exp per enemy pit fighter taken OOA
+1 exp per 10 crowd points

I'd love some feedback. Then we can jig them around and hopefully have some concrete rules ready for when we start the campaign proper. I'd also love to playtest them (or whatever revised rules spring out of the feedback) at some point to gauge their balance. Please don't hesistate to rip them apart.

Pit Fighting alongside a Mordheim campaign

Sponsorship
Each of the pit fighter characters is sponsored, one by each warband in the campaign, and the remainder by one of the Vercuso newspapers.

The Pit Fighter Championship
This is an ongoing knock-out competition with fighters progressing and scoring championship points.

First round:
• All pit fighters fight in randomly-drawn one-on-one match-ups
• Pit fighters score 2 championship points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss
• Any injured pit fighters who rolled 'Sent to the Pits' or 'Captured' are put on one side until the end of the round. They must then fight a multi-fighter exhibition game together, or fight a random beast (see above).
• All pit fighters who have not died move on to the next round...

Subsequent rounds:
• All pit fighters fight in one-on-one match-ups according to their championship points score: Arrange the fighters in decreasing order and pair up with the adjacent fighter. Where fighters have the same championship score, rank them by accumulated crowd points. (Randomise where a number still share the same score.) An unmatched fighter at the bottom of the list must fight a random beast (see above).
• Pit fighters still score 2 championship points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss
• Any injured pit fighters who rolled 'Sent to the Pits' or 'Captured' are put on one side until the end of the round. They must then fight a multi-fighter exhibition game together, or fight a random beast (see above).
• All pit fighters who have not died move on to the next round...
• ...and so on...

Final round:
• When the time comes to draw the championship to a close, use their championship points to arrange the remaining fighters into a seeded knock-out league to determine the winner. There can be only one.

Warband hero injury rolls
If an injured hero rolls ‘Sold the pits’ he must fight a randomly generated pit fighter character. Both models will gain experience, injuries etc. as normal. If the hero survives, he also gets the financial prize indicated in the rulebook.

If an injured hero rolls ‘Captured’, the enemy warband may send him to the pits to fight their own 'sponsored' pit fighter character (assuming he’s still alive). Both models will gain experience, injuries etc. as normal. If the hero survives, he also gets the financial prize as if he was ‘Sold to the pits’, but it the enemy warband automatically receive it as payment for his release.

A warband may not voluntarily send one of their own heroes to the pits - it's just too risky!

Betting on pit fights
Warbands may bet their gold crowns on championship fights according to the odds posted by the Vercuso bookmakers (aka Andy).

Each of the pit fighter characters is sponsored, one by each warband in the campaign, and the remainder by one of the Vercuso newspapers. If a warband’s chosen fighter is killed, they may transfer sponsorship to another pit fighter but this will cost them whichever is highest of his current experience, championship points or crowd points in gold crowns.

How does that sound? You're either paying for expertise, success or popularity, and he will definitely cost at least 22gc.

Don't you think it would be better to have blank cells in the Pit Fighter profile? So that you can actually erase the old value (rather than crossing it which make the roster look a mess) if you get an advancement?
