I would normally say start at 1, but i have to admit the problem with that is 1st levellers die so easily and you spend a lot of time with players dying and having to be replaced that it can ruin the adventure.
But it does allow better character building, if you survive.
I was thinking of maybe going old school and start on one of the old basic modules like B1 In Search of the Unknown, or B2 keep on the borderlands (the first module i ever played!)
I think im pretty open on starting level but what i was thinking is using one of the alternate stat rolling methods where you have 10 for each stat then roll xd6 (cant remember the amount used now!) and add them to your stats as you wish.
This allows you to create the character class you want to play (luckily basic is pretty basic as well!) and if you roll well your more likely of getting a real hero.
I was thinking about this last night and realised that in some ways a basic set of role play mechanics allows you to concentrate more on the character building adventure side. (Im so trying to stay away from any 40k/fantasy analogy's)

I have 2 views on role playing characters (esp fantasy hero's) the first is the Hercule's type hero who is known for his enormous strength etc, where the stats make the character. And the other is the odysseus hero, who is more of just a ordinary guy in an extra ordinary world and has to get by on wits and skill.
I think both have merits but i think its all down to what kind off game you want to play.
