Dazza has very kindly given me a mammoth of MAMMOTH proportions for my Cave Orcs! I'm planning to update the Forgeworld chaos war mammoth rules below. Any advice from those more familiar with 8th Ed would be much appreciated.

Save: The plates on the side of the Mammoth give it a 6+ armour save.

Ignore Psychology: Nothing scares an enraged Mammoth! They are immune to Psychology.

Large Target: Mammoths are…well, Mammoth sized! It is a large target.

Terror: The Mammoth is massive, shaking the ground with its foot falls, bellowing and snorting as it crushes all before it. A Mammoth causes terror in their foes. See the Warhammer Psychology rules for details. A Mammoth has a unit strength of 12 for fear tests

Move: So huge and heavy is the Mammoth that they step over or easily crush obstacles such as walls and fences without breaking stride. Treat any obstacles that are not higher than the Mammoths knees as open ground. The Mammoth is a lumbering beast and cannot make a March move. It may still charge as normal.

MAMMOTH SPECIAL ATTACKS

Mammoths do not attack in the same way as other creatures though they select their victims as normal. They do not respond to orders and have no plans beyond violently crushing anything before them. The player controlling the Mammoth may select one of the following types of attacks each time it is the Mammoths turn to attack.

Trample, Stamp, Gore…

The Mammoth just walks right into and over the enemy, crushing them beneath its massive feet, smashing them with its trunk and tusks and generally throwing its massive weight about. This can have a devastating effected on densely packed troops, but skirmishers can more easily evade the trampling. A unit attacked by a trampling Mammoth sustains 1D6+the rank bonus of the unit being attacked (max 3) Strength 10 hits. Work out damage and saves as normal.

Butt

The Mammoth charges head first, ramming its huge weigh into the target, flattening buildings, walls, towers. This attack can only be used against stationary targets such as buildings, walls, castle gates etc. A butt attack cannot be used against enemy units or characters, they are too small.
The Mammoth automatic scores one hit against the target, causing a Strength 10 hit. If this is against a castle roll on 2D6+10 on the appropriate damage table.

Pick up and …

The Mammoth uses its agile trunk to grab a hapless victim that is either in base contact or touching a model in base contact (the trunk has a long reach). The target may make a single attack to fend off the trunk. If it hits and wounds the Mammoth then the attack fails, otherwise the Mammoth grabs the model and rolls a D6 to see what the Mammoth does next:
1-2 Throw back into combat. The victim is hurled back into his own unit like a missile. This causes D3 wounds on the victim with no saves of any kind allowed, and D6 Str 4 hits (saves as normal) on the unit. If the thrown model survives place it at the back of the target unit.
3-4 Hurl. The victim is hurled into any enemy unit within 18” of the Mammoth, randomly determine which. This causes D3 wounds on the victim with no saves of any kind allowed, and D6 Str 4 hits (saves as normal) on the unit. If no enemy units are in range threat this as a Throw back into combat result. If the thrown model survives place it at the back of the target unit.
5 Eat. The Mammoth swings the victim into it’s gaping mouth and munches him down. The model is removed from the game. If the target is another large creature then even a Mammoth’s mouth is not large enough. Roll this result again for large creatures that the Mammoth picks up.
6 Squash. The Mammoths strong trunk constricts the victim until it pops! The model is a casualty and is removed from the game. Any creature or character with a basic strength of 6 or above is too strong to be squashed, in which case roll again on this table.

Bellow

The Mammoth roars and bellows at the enemy. Deafeningly loud and terrifying neither the Mammoth nor any units in contact with it actually fight if they have not already done so this turn. The Mammoth’s side automatically wins the combat round. The enemy must make a break test with a –1 modifier.

HOWDAH

The Howdah on the Mammoths back must carry a single unit of up to 20 Chaos Marauders. This unit may include a champion, banner bearer and musician. This unit may be equipped with hooks and chains, for swing down at their enemies. Hooks and chains count as throwing axes and cost +1 pts per model. Up to 10 Marauders may use the hooks and chains to attack units in close combat with the Mammoth. Whilst in the howdah the Marauders count as Skirmishers for the purposes of resolving combat. If the Mammoth is killed the surviving Marauders must spend their next turn reforming.

In addition to the Marauders the howdah throne may seat a single Chaos Lord or Exalted Champion for the points costs indicated in Warhammer Armies book: Chaos. A Chaos Sorcerer may cast spells from the back of the Mammoth.
The howdah may also carry an Aspiring Champion carrying the Army Battle Standard.

Any characters or the Marauders can dismount from the Mammoth, to fight on foot as normal. The Mammoth must remain stationary for the entire turn, and those dismounting (down ropes and rope ladders) can do nothing else (including casting spells etc) in the turn they dismount. They are formed up in a single unit in base contact with the Mammoth model, as if reforming. Once dismounted they may not remount, this would take far too long.

A character may dismount to take part in a challenge, and may automatically remount or continue fighting on the ground if he survives.

The howdah can be targeted by missile fire separately from the Mammoth and counts as hard cover against missile fire for those in it. All attacks against the Mammoth and its riders must be resolved against the Mammoth, not the riders who are too high up to be hit. Attacks by flying creatures can be targeted at either the riders or the Mammoth itself.

Troops riding a Mammoth are immune to psychology and do not take panic tests, they have nowhere to run! They will be carried out of combat if the Mammoth should fail its break test.

The Mammoth is so tall that troops in the howdah can use it as a siege tower, and can exit the howdah onto castle battlements and towers as if it was a siege tower.

RAMPAGE

Once a Mammoth is badly wounded it is likely to become uncontrollably wild, and begin to rampage out of control. At the start of the Chaos players turn roll a D6. If the score is higher than the Mammoths remaining wounds it goes berserk and begins to rampage out of control. Once the Mammoth starts rampaging do not roll again, it remains berserk until it is killed or leaves the table. Note, do not roll until the Mammoth has 5 wounds or less remaining.

As compulsory movement the Mammoth moves 2D6 inches in a random direction as determined by the scatter dice. The Mammoth counts as charging and tramples any unit (friend or foe) it moves into. If the random movement takes the Mammoth into a wall or building then it butts the obstacle instead.

POINTS

600 + cost of the unit or character carried. The Mammoth counts as two Rare choices for a Chaos Army. The unit of Marauders and the Characters must be bought separately.

Shouldn't need too much tweaking I hope. I'm obviously going to replace mauraders with boyz (handy that the points cost doesn't include crew).

Few things to tweak, max wounds it can have are 10.
There are no unit strength rules anymore so they can be deleted.
As for the obstacle bit, might want to just put that as obstacles (which are listed in the rule book) rather than things which are at/below its knees.
Need to update the bit about which chaos heroe's can ride it as the book has changed since this was written.

Ive removed the siege rules from it as they arent really used in 8th ed, if your playing a siege though, im sure you can discuss that with each other and agree to still use the rules it had.

HOWDAH
The Howdah on the Mammoths back may carry a single unit of up to 20 Marauders. This unit may include a champion, banner bearer and musician. This unit may be equipped with hooks and chains, which they swing down at their enemies. Up to 10 Marauders may use the hooks and chains to make a single attack at units in close combat with the Mammoth. Whilst in the howdah the Marauders count as Skirmishers for the purposes of resolving combat. If the Mammoth is killed the surviving Marauders must spend their next turn reforming.

In addition to the Marauders the howdah throne may seat a single character from the Warriors of Chaos Army Book. This may not be a special or otherwise named character. Due to his unique position he may fight as normal.

Any characters or the Marauders can dismount from the Mammoth, to fight on foot as normal. The Mammoth must remain stationary for the entire turn, and those dismounting (down ropes and rope ladders) can do nothing else (including casting spells etc) in the turn they dismount. They are formed up in a single unit in base contact with the Mammoth model, as if reforming. Once dismounted they may not remount, this would take far too long. They may not dismount if the Mammoth is in combat. No characters or champions on a Mammoth may issue or accept challenges.

The howdah can be targeted by missile fire separately from the Mammoth and counts as hard cover against missile fire for those in it. All attacks against the Mammoth and its riders must be resolved against the Mammoth, not the riders who are too high up to be hit.

Troops riding a Mammoth ar immune to psychology as they have nowhere to run! They will be carried with the Mammoth out of combat if the Mammoth should fail its break test.

RAMPAGE
Once a Mammoth is badly wounded it is likely to become uncontrollably wild, and begin to rampage out of control. At the start of the owning players turn roll a D6. If the score is higher than the Mammoths remaining wounds it goes berserk and begins to rampage out of control. Once the Mammoth starts rampaging do not roll again, it remains berserk until it is killed or leaves the table. Note, do not roll until the Mammoth has 5 wounds or less remaining.

As compulsory movement the Mammoth moves 2D6 inches in a random direction as determined by the scatter dice. If this movement will take it into a unit (friend or foe) then it does D6+1 Strength 10 impact hits and uses its Trample, Stamp, Gore… attack. After resolving the damage it is moved back an inch from the unit. If the random movement takes the Mammoth into a building then the Mammoth takes D6 Strength 10 hits. If it rampages off the board edge it is removed and treated as a casualty.

500 Points. The Mammoth is one of a kind so you may only ever field one of them and counts as a rare choice. The unit of Marauders and the Character must be bought separately.

I see there are quite a lot of changes there, (almost) all of which seem to make a lot of sense. I see you've dropped the points value too - how confident are you about this (sorry, but I don't know how much experience you have with rules writing)?

Why maximum of 10 wounds, is that an 8th Ed thing? I ask because the model is certainly big enough to warrant more! If that's how it has to be, maybe we should up the toughness a point (seeing as 6 always wounds nowadays)?

For the trample attack, I wondered about doubling the rank bonus modifer if it's crashing through a hoard?

Basically no stat can go above 10, thats why I changed it. Reason why I left it at toughness 7 was to give bolt throwers a chance at wounding. Now they wound on a 5, otherwise it would be on a 6. Oh, and its unit type would be 'unique'. I wouldnt change the number of hits on a horde as the attack is allready pretty good.

As for the points im quite confident 500 should be plenty, ive changed a couple of the attacks to not work if it hits a large target instead of re-rolling and lowered the number of wounds. Although I suppose I did put impact hits on. But i think it should be ok.

It makes sense for bolt throwers to be better at wounding it than arrows(!) - good call. And I'd not noticed the addition of impact hits.

First off, I haven't read what pete (vodrake) has written yet as I thought I'd have a go from scratch, I'll go back and read what petes written after I've gone through it for myself once. I'll put changes in red

Ignore Psychology: Nothing scares an enraged Mammoth! They are immune to Psychology.

Large Target: Mammoths are…well, Mammoth sized! It is a large target.

Thunderstomp

Terror: The Mammoth is massive, shaking the ground with its foot falls, bellowing and snorting as it crushes all before it. A Mammoth causes terror in their foes. See the Warhammer Psychology rules for details. deleted unit strength reference

Move: So huge and heavy is the Mammoth that they step over or easily crush obstacles such as walls and fences without breaking stride. Treat any obstacles delete "that are not higher than the Mammoths knees" as open ground. The Mammoth is a lumbering beast and cannot make a March move. It may still charge as normal and has swift stride.

MAMMOTH SPECIAL ATTACKS

Mammoths do not attack in the same way as other creatures though they select their victims as normal. They do not respond to orders and have no plans beyond violently crushing anything before them. The player controlling the Mammoth must roll to see which type of attack it performs each time it is the Mammoths turn to attack.

Roll of 1-2: Rear up and crush!
The mammoth rears up onto its hide legs and comes crashing down on anyone unfortunate enough to still be there when it comes back down. The unit suffers 1D6 Strength 7 hits which each cause d3 wounds. Work out saves as normal.
Roll of 3-4: Trample, Stamp, Gore…

The Mammoth just walks right into and over the enemy, crushing them beneath its massive feet, smashing them with its trunk and tusks and generally throwing its massive weight about. This can have a devastating effected on densely packed troops, but skirmishers can more easily evade the trampling. A unit attacked by a trampling Mammoth sustains 1D6+the ranks of the unit being attacked Strength 10 hits. Work out damage and saves as normal.

Roll of a 5: Pick up and …

The Mammoth uses its agile trunk to grab a hapless victim that is either in base contact or touching a model in base contact (the trunk has a long reach). The target may make a single attack to fend off the trunk. If it hits and wounds the Mammoth then the attack fails, otherwise the Mammoth grabs the model and rolls a D6 to see what the Mammoth does next:

1-2 Throw back into combat. The victim is hurled back into his own unit like a missile. This causes D3 wounds on the victim with no saves of any kind allowed, and D6 Str 4 hits (saves as normal) on the unit. If the thrown model survives place it at the back of the target unit.
3-4 Hurl. The victim is hurled into any enemy unit within 18” of the Mammoth, randomly determine which. This causes D3 wounds on the victim with no saves of any kind allowed, and D6 Str 4 hits (saves as normal) on the unit. If no enemy units are in range threat this as a Throw back into combat result. If the thrown model survives place it at the back of the target unit.
5 Eat. The Mammoth swings the victim into it’s gaping mouth and munches him down. The model is removed from the game. If the target is another large creature then even a Mammoth’s mouth is not large enough. Roll this result again for large creatures that the Mammoth picks up.
6 Squash. The Mammoths strong trunk constricts the victim until it pops! The model is a casualty and is removed from the game. Any creature or character with a basic strength of 6 or above is too strong to be squashed, in which case roll again on this table.

Roll of a 6: Bellow

The Mammoth roars and bellows at the enemy. Deafeningly loud and terrifying neither the Mammoth nor any units in contact with it actually fight if they have not already done so this turn. The Mammoth’s side automatically wins the combat round. The enemy must make a break test with a –2 modifier.

HOWDAH

The Howdah on the Mammoths back must carry a single unit of up to 20 Chaos Marauders. This unit may include a champion, banner bearer and musician. This unit may be equipped with hooks and chains, for swing down at their enemies. Hooks and chains count as throwing axes and cost +1 pts per model. Up to 10 Marauders may use the hooks and chains to attack units in close combat with the Mammoth. Whilst in the howdah the Marauders count as Skirmishers for the purposes of resolving combat. If the Mammoth is killed the surviving Marauders must spend their next turn reforming.

In addition to the Marauders the howdah throne may seat a single Chaos Lord or Exalted Champion for the points costs indicated in Warhammer Armies book: Chaos. A Chaos Sorcerer may cast spells from the back of the Mammoth.
The howdah may also carry an Aspiring Champion carrying the Army Battle Standard.

Any characters or the Marauders can dismount from the Mammoth, to fight on foot as normal. The Mammoth must remain stationary for the entire turn, and those dismounting (down ropes and rope ladders) can do nothing else (including casting spells etc) in the turn they dismount. They are formed up in a single unit in base contact with the Mammoth model, as if reforming. Once dismounted they may not remount, this would take far too long.

A character may dismount to take part in a challenge, and may automatically remount or continue fighting on the ground if he survives.

The howdah can be targeted by missile fire separately from the Mammoth and counts as hard cover against missile fire for those in it. All attacks against the Mammoth and its riders must be resolved against the Mammoth, not the riders who are too high up to be hit. Attacks by flying creatures can be targeted at either the riders or the Mammoth itself.

Troops riding a Mammoth are immune to psychology and do not take panic tests, they have nowhere to run! They will be carried out of combat if the Mammoth should fail its break test.

The Mammoth is so tall that troops in the howdah can use it as a siege tower, and can exit the howdah onto castle battlements and towers as if it was a siege tower.

RAMPAGE

Once a Mammoth is badly wounded it is likely to become uncontrollably wild, and begin to rampage out of control. At the start of the Chaos players turn roll a D6. If the score is higher than the Mammoths remaining wounds it goes berserk and begins to rampage out of control. Once the Mammoth starts rampaging do not roll again, it remains berserk until it is killed or leaves the table. Note, do not roll until the Mammoth has 5 wounds or less remaining.

As compulsory movement the Mammoth moves 2D6 inches in a random direction as determined by the scatter dice. The Mammoth counts as charging and tramples any unit (friend or foe) it moves into. If the random movement takes the Mammoth into a wall or building then it butts the obstacle instead.

POINTS

600 + cost of the unit or character carried. The Mammoth counts as two Rare choices for a Chaos Army. The unit of Marauders and the Characters must be bought separately.

Seems like me and pete had the same type of ideas about how to change it to 8th. Main thing was that it seems like you should roll to see which attack you do like a giant rather than pick (as the fluff clearly describes how even it has no plan abouit what it'll do next). I've added another type of attack as I don't think there should be an auto win plus break check with a -2 modifier 1/3rd of the time. Thinking about it now though I'd prob increase its leadership a little and make it stubborn. Impact hits also make sense but it may start to get silly seeing you have a unit of "marauders" and a chaos lord to attack too (imapct plus thunderstomp plus trample plus unit plus character!!!)

1-2 The Mammoth Gores at the front ranks of the enemy unit. If the Mammoth charged, roll to hit every model in the first 2 ranks. In any other instance, just tthe first rank is affected.

3-4 The Mammoth rears up and brings its feet crashing into the enemy unit. This is treated like thunderstomp, but goes in initiative order. it causes 2D6 hits and can affect cavalry and Ogre sized models too.

5-6 The Mammoth Gores and tramples the enemy unit as they move to attack. attacks at Initiative 1. Roll to hit every enemy model that attacks the Mammoth in this round of combat

Fleeing Mammoths: If a mammoth flees through any unit, the unit takes 2D6 str 7 hits.

for the Howdah, i think the mammoth needs to be counted as a moving building. Give it the same rules as a building for assaults/shooting etc
