My name is Brandon Vallee (aka Stillfrosty) and I would say that I was one of the “Cinderellas” at this year’s finals. This was my first Adepticon event I decided to hit hard and go for the gold. I played all three days and it was extremely exhausting but well worth it and very rewarding. At the end of the event I placed 5th out of 246 and if Tony does not go to the ETC event, I am the next one in contention for the slot (Jay Woodcock received the other postion).

In case you guys wanted to know I was the one who ran the Khan Biker list featured on table 1 in the finals first round against Clark’s Space marines. My list was as follows…

Going into the finals my record was 3-0-1 I received a draw against Doug (who also made it to the finals) after an issue with our game. When we originally signed off the sheets we both agreed that I had one with 2-1 objectives. However 45 minutes after the fact he became aware that we had read the mission wrong and complained to the judge. After 5 minutes of discussion, the judge awarded us both with draws as it was well after the fact and that he should have caught it sooner. At the time I was quite pissed about this result, but in the end it allowed me to move into the sweet sixteen because I got to play several underwhelming armies.

This was my only complaint about the event. I think the judge did the best he could without screwing either of us over. All of my games were fantastic and there were no disputes over the rules. The players were generally very easy going and the terrain was relatively easy to define, playable, and mutually beneficial to all armies.

In regards to terrain, there were over 128 warhammer 40k tables (do the math people) not including all of the other events. I think the Adepticon Staff did a great job evenly distributing the terrain on all tables. Typically there was one building in the center which would block line of sight for infantry and small tanks. Then there were 2-3 city ruin type pieces and 2-3 area terrain pieces such as a forest or a rocky hill. All elements of the area terrain (such as the trees) were removable for being able to move models through the piece. I was impressed because at no time did I feel there was a planet bowling ball or a city fight type of table. All of the tables were balanced and fair.

Clark had an interesting list simply because of the Thunderfire cannons in his army. I had never seen a list online with so many of them. I knew about their subterranean rules and that would prove to be a bane for my army. The mission we played was a pitched battle deployment with 5 objectives, kill points, and terminate a marked unit. We rolled off and he won the roll and chose to go first. He placed his razors next to the center building tac squads and cannons on the flanks in terrain. He stayed more than 18 inches away from the board edge so I could not get an assault off. I opted to deploy everything in reserve or outflank. I did deploy a razorback in order to protect one of my flanks (from being blocked off) and to pull his terminators away from the bulk of his army (bait). He did not take the bait but infiltrated his terminators to protect his tac squad.

Over the course of the game he was really unsure what to do. The terminators moved up hugging the center piece while the las razors shot at my razor back. The wreck the vehicle round two and the tac squad gets out to become more appealing for the terminators to chase after. I got the command squad in, speeder squadron, and a small bike squad in round 2 and promptly killed a razor, boosted the command squad on the flank, and thinned out a tac squad on the opposite flank. Turn three he went for the bait with his terminators and moved them off the terrain to engage the tac squad but failed to reach them. Thunder firecannons shot at the small bike squad and they lost a few dudes. The command squad was obscured from enemy fire. Round three most of my army comes in. The speeders light up the other razor back and begin thinning out the squads the command squad moves up again and is reinforced with an outflanking melta gun squad which also boosted to get into position. The opposite flank gets boosted with a plasma squad. The small bike squad with a wounded attack bike and a regular dude charge 4 tac marines to get locked in assault.

Turn 4 he moves the terminators up an assaults the tacs killing them and thunderfires the hell out of bike squads. As an aside, I lost more bikes in dangerous terrain tests then I did against his shooting. My turn 4 my last speeder squad comes in and my last small bike squad. The command and the melta move up the targeted thunder fire and to assault the tac squad and his thunder fire cannon the plasma squad moves up to assault the thunder fire cannon and assist the two bikers in the assault with the tac marines. The round I finished off two thunder fires and an entire tac squad. Round five he realizes that my command squad is not stopping but there are two wrecked vehicles in their path. He rolls poorly for terrain tests and fleet moves leaving them out of assault. My bike squad finishes off the techmarine but the remnant squad remains. My turn five my command and all bike units move to finish off the last tech marine and I finish off the remnant squad. Right now I have massive lead in with 3-0 objectives. We roll and get a turn six. Once again the terminators epic fail on their terrain rolls and fleet rolls and do not get into assault. I take a few wounds to shooting. My turn six all of my bikes move up to finish off the last razor and the remaining marines. I thin them out with all of the speeders and then I charge wiping out all of them. 15 minutes is called but he wants to play another round so I indulge him since this game was over. He finally gets the terminator into assault and knocks out two small bike squads, the khan and the apothecary. I move to secure two objectives gun down a bunch of terminators and the game is called. 3-0 White Scars Victory.

Personally, I never have had much luck against tyranids with this list. This is mainly because I never get to face them since everyone has given up on them when I play at events. The game was pitched battle, sum of parts (half to kill more than half of the opponents army), objectives 3.

This game was going to be a rough one because Jay is a really good gamer who has won many events. He deployed first and covered the center using his gargoyles as cover for his army. I deployed everything and castled my bike army. I stole the initiative and thinned out a few squads. He moved forward and stunned the hell out of my speeders. Next turn I shifted my army and thinned out the squads some more. He shot at the speeders again and blew up a few. Turn three I realized that there was no way I was going to win a shooting war with all of my heavy guns being incapacitated so I decided to combi assault several of his units to beat him down with combat resolution. So I charged one side of the massive gargoyle squad with my command squad and the other flank with bike squad and wrapped into a unit of twenty genestealers. At the end of the assault I caused a combat resolution of -16 against both fearless units and wiped them out. The following turn he did the same to me but with gaunts and a tervigon and with some really lucky dice rolling, the tervigon hit and wounded with seven attacks and wiped out a bike squad and with combat resolution thinned out the other squad. The command squad took a stealer charge and lost most of their members. At this point of the game it was over. But I managed to prevent him from getting an over whelming victory on me so I used my khan and command squad to hit and run into his deployment zone and flew my speeders away from him. He needed to get five kill points in order to achieve the one objective and he only got four while I got 3. He needed to get more units in my deployment zone then I did in his and we tied in that aspect. But he had a pooped out guant squad claim the center objective while I had none so he won 0-1.

Personally this list was terrible. It was all over the place and had no long ranged shooting ability what so ever. I absolutely love facing lists like this. We played kill points, corners, and control the center with an HQ. I won the roll off and forced him to go first. He deploys everything near the center. I play a reserve game and outflank/reserve units. He moves up and controls the center of the table with his army. Bottom of turn two I get in two speeder squadrons and a small bike unit. The speeders knock out his storm raven and immobilize a rhino. The small bike squad stuns the other one. Turn three he moves up to try and get the small attack bike which is well out of assault range. My turn three I get some more speeders in my command squad on the same flank as the small bike squad and a plasma squad on my other flank. Plasma squad moves boosts towards the center. Command squad gets shielded by the small bike squad from any potential assaults and acts as more bait. My speeders light up his dred and his rhinos wrecking all of them. Turn four he moves all of his terminators sanguinor and a small assault squad to intercept the command squad but is still out of range. My turn four the rest of the army comes in. I throw all of my scoring units into uncontested corners. The command squad turbo boosts along with their meat shield down my flank. My speeders light up the center of the table knocking out the honor guard and thinning out the tac marines. The plasma bike squad charges and finishes off a tac squad. Turn five he finally gets and assault off with his terminators and annihilates the meat shield. My turn five I continue to pound his scoring units so he only has 2 tac marines and 2 assault marines left. I charge the command squad into the sanguinor and kill him but they take a beating in return because he hates them. Game ends in turn five. I only lost one kill point while he lost eight. His two man assault squad was in two corners and we rolled to see which one they were in and of course he got the one to contest me so I won 1-0 objectives.

A-typical net list for Space Wolves. Surprisingly this my first puppies match for the entire tournament. I absolutely LOVE facing space wolf armies because they are all the same and I get a kick out of massacring them. We played dawn of war, kill points, control 3 home objects, control 3 enemy objectives. He won the roll off and deployed a wolf guard squad in a rhino with a priest in the middle. I reserve/outflank everything and opt not to seize the initiative. He moves long fangs into cover and his rhinos up and his thunderwolves behind the rhinos for cover. He did not move the long fangs in far enough so they could be assaulted by an outflanking unit.

My turn two, I only get a small bike squad on my right which is not ideal for getting an assault off a small melta squad on my left and two speeder squadrons. The speeders target the only long fang squad in line of sight (thanks blocking terrain!) and drop them down to a man. The small bike squad shoots at the long fangs and does nothing. Assaults and kills one and wins combat so I stay locked in. Turn three he disembarks a grey hunter squad to dispatch the bike squad from that assault and does so successfully. He moves his other rhinos up to shoot my other bike squad with jaws. Naturally he pops my powerfist…. Thunder wolves move slowly towards the bike squad on my melta squad. The grey hunters kills the unit of bikes but not before I kill two long fangs in the process. Round 3 I get another speeder squadron in the command squad off my board edge, the other small biker squad to replace the one that just died and the plasma squad with the melta squad. The command squad moves up to apply pressure on the grey hunters. The speeders focus on the rhinos and kills two and immobilizes one. Turn four he gets two grey hunter squads and a run priest to deal with the command squad while the thunder wolves move to charge the plasma squad. He snipes out two more fists with jaws (one in my plasma squad and one in my command squad) and proceeds to assault both units. Thunderwolves crush the plasma squad and the command squad dies but before they do they kill 5 grey hunters and the Khan lives and kills a rune priest. This cause one unit to break and the khan got surrounded. But thanks to hit and run he got out of that assault to go escort that pack of grey hunters off the table and to avenge his battle brothers against those long fangs. He forgets to move his grey hunters out of the tight circle he made around my khan which made a great target for flamers and frag rounds.

My turn four the melta gun squad runs away from the wolves and the khan positions himself to assault the long fangs while escorting a unit off of the table. My last unit came on which was my tac squad and they take an objective for me. The speeders hit the two squads of grey hunters on the table killing all but two and wounding the rune priest on my left and leaving four on my right. The tac squad which is camping on the objective and for the first time all tournament I finally fired my sergeant’s combi-melta and killed a wolf guard. The Khan assaults the long fangs but does not kill all of them and they remain locked in assault. Turn five his unit runs away some more and the thunder wolf lord leaves his unit to assault speeders. He also moves his last three wolf guard to assault the tac marines. The wolf lord misses the speeders completely and the tac marines beat the grey hunters in assault and cause them to break. The khan dispatches the long fangs. My turn five The khan moves to kill the other long fang squad and my speeders move to finish off the remaining grey hunters and rune priest. I knock out all of his scoring units and he has two scoring units fleeing in terror. The khan dispatches the remaining long fang squad. We roll and get a turn six and at this point he has two fleeing grey hunter units a squad of thunder wolves and a pissed off wolf lord. Khan escorts the grey hunter squad off of the table the wolf lord charges the razorback and destroys it and the thunder wolves move to hit the remaining melta gun squad but fail their terrain test. Round six I begin directing all of my fire power into his thunder wolves and khan waits patiently mocking the fleeing units. My remaining small bike squad takes his objective while the small melta bike squad takes another of his objectives. So at this point I am winning 3-0. Fifteen minutes are called and he begs me to play another quick round, so I agree as it was really entertaining at this point. Thunder wolves kill of the melta bike squad and the wolf lord kills the tac marines. My speeders shot at the thunder wolves and the Khan dispatched the rest of them in a blaze of 6’s. All he had left was a lone long fang which did absolutely nothing to my tanks but damn could he pass saves and his wolf lord. The khan dispatched six units by himself. Because I lost the tac squad I got dropped down to 2-0 but I still crushed the wolves.

I know that this was long and painful to read, but it was some crazy great times at this event. My only complaint about the way the finals were ran was the bracket system. Though I had a better record than both the 3rd and 4th place finishers stronger schedule and more wins I wound up with fifth. That is the nature of the beast and I hope that next year they fix this problem.

Overall I went 6-1-1 which definitely is not bad for the Khan and the codex marines.

Ha, I did not even realize that I forgot to cut that out. I wrote up this article for another website and I used that to introduce myself. I'll have you know that I don't have a Flame On shirt yet as I never got one. But if you want to bring one for me to wear in future events I will proudly represent the club.

I hope that either one drops out. I really want to go and get some drinks with all of you. Maybe we should make a Flame On team for the ETC? lol
