Ok, prepare for diagram overload.

The rage rule in the BRB states

In the Movement phase, units subject to rage must always move as fast as possible towards the closest visible unit.

So here the set up - the blue circles represent Death Co. with jump packs. The red circles represent enemy units A and B

So what do/can I do in the movement phase.

First when it says move as fast as possible I take it it doesn't always mean as fast as the units movement allows, as in the following case the unit would fly well past the closest unit.

So I believe as fast as possible, refers to; must end their move as close as possible to the nearest enemy unit.

Also I am fairly sure its not this, as it says the UNIT must move towards the enemy unit, not each model, then the Death Co dont have to do this -

So does that mean the Death Co can do this;

As it satisfies the criteria of the unit being as close as possible to the nearest enemy unit (its 1" away) and then all the rest are placed within coherence wherever I please (as they are not making the unit any further away)

Also does it mean I could do this, as again the Death Co are as close as possible (and have technically moved faster)

Or???

I feel you've got this bit right.

It is my opinion that when the BRB says 'the unit' it covers all models of the squad.

So you're third diagram, where the 'Rage' inflicted unit has surrounded enemy unit 'A' is the way it would be played. This way, the unit, ie ALL of them, have moved as far as possible towards the closest enemy unit.

when it says only "the unit" i believe it is referring to the unit as a singular.

thus the second and third diagrams satisfy the criteria as "the unit" is a close - as possible while "all models in the unit" may not be.

No but provided you have moved as far as your move allows towards them it is fine. It says moves as FAST AS POSSIBLE. So if I move, as in your example 12" forward, the full jump pack move, then provided it is towards the closest enemy target and I finish said move closer than when I started it is fine. So in that case I if the move carry's me over them, such as in diagram 2 or 5, it is fine provided I have made my full move (moved as fast as possible) AND I am closer than when I started.

I dont agree that you can only end your move slightly closer, i think "move as fast as possible (no comma) towards" doesnt refer to the unit moving as fast as possible, but to it moving as quickly/directly towards the enemy unit, ie via the shortest possible distance (eg if i wanted to move as fast as possible to you across a room it would be via the most direct root). In which case, in retrospect i dont think the bottom image (5) is allowed.

However in image 4 the unit has made itself as close as possible, by moving via the most direct route (as fast as possible). For me, as the rule doesn't say "all models in the unit" as it does for many other rules, coupled with the fact it allows the controlling player to charge whatever target he wants, not just the closest visible enemy, then this seams perfectly fine by me - and within what was intended (if they had intended image 3 to be right i honestly believe they would have included the two above statements)

It doesnt stop people using throw away units to draw the death co out of position, just means they have to be clever about it and gap the throw away unit from their army sufficiently.
