The Invasion at Black Fire Pass- The Big Easter Warhammer Game at the Hogbunker!
Well here it is my long overdue and unheralded battle report of the grand battle between Orcs, Ogres, Empire, Dwarfs and Vampire Counts.

The Mission
We decided to play the Invasion! mission in the back of the big rulebook (pg 410) with a very precarious alliance of Empire, Dwarfs and Vampire Counts attempting to thwart a joint Orc and Ogre invasion marching north up the Black Fire Pass into the lands of the Empire.

Quick brief of the mission both players are attempting to dominate the four quarters of the board (by having a lot more units in than the enemy) and control the three key terrain pieces by having the nearest unit to their centrepoint, or occupying them. The Defender can set up anywhere more than 12” from an enemy, including holding the key terrain pieces as their advantage, but the Attacker gets to recycle destroyed Core unit choices to show his endless supply of troops.

The Attackers
Richard took the role of attacker, bringing suitably aggressive armies in the form of a 3000pts Orc army and a 3000pts Ogre army. My knowledge of Orcs or Ogres is not the best but suffice to say there was a large mix of units- Ogre Bulls and Orc Boys backed up by Scrap Launchers, Savage Orcs, Spider Riders, Squig Herds, etc. Of note the Ambushing Spider Riders and Yeti’s that would appear from behind our lines, and the two rhino sized Ogre mounts carrying mobile cannons proved troublesome.

The Defenders
This was far more convoluted.
Lee brought 3000pts of Empire. Several units of Handgunners with full commands bulked the force out, with a massive unit of Inner Circle Knights being the punch. Two Helstorm Rocket Batteries, Helblaster Volley Gun and Cannons giving it brutal shooting. A fair bit of magic characters thrown in two, which would absorb their share of power dice much to the annoyance of the Vampire Counts.

I split my 3000pts into a 1000pts Dwarf force consisting of a unit of Thunderers with full command, a unit of Quarellers with full command, a unit of Hammerers with full command led by a Thane, a Cannon and a Volleygun. Unsurprisingly the Dwarfs would perform far above their weight on the defensive!

My 2000pts of Vampire Counts was led by a Vampire Lord and Master Necromancer leading two Skeleton units, Grave Guard, Ghouls, Zombies, two Dire Wolf units, a Varghulf, Black Knights and a Cairn Wraith. As with the Dwarfs, they proved highly effective on the defensive.

Deployment
Main Picture

As the attacker, Richard deployed first- as you can see in the picture below- a tide of Orc and Ogre stretches from edge to edge. Rich wisely placed his Ogres in front, not only to take advantage of their higher movement but to prevent any embarrassing Orc squabbles stalling their advance.

For our deployment, the Dwarf Thunderers claimed the Watchtower within spitting distance of the enemy with the support of a unit of Empire Knights (top left, main picture).

Dwarf Quarellers also claimed the Fortified Manor (mid left, main picture) because no-one argues with a Dwarf with a wall of Handgunners deploying in front of it.

The final objective, Entrenchments (mid right, main picture) was held mostly by a reserve of the undead Vampire Counts backed up by Dwarf and Empire firepower.

The board centre was left empty in the hopes the enemy would pile into a kill zone, whilst heavy hitters like the Inner Circle Knights sat at the back to counter-charge late in the game. Various Dire Wolves, Wraiths, Outriders, etc faced out towards our side edge and rear hoping to discourage Ambushers.

Turn 1
The Orcs and Ogres rushed forward, though the huge unit of Orcs on the right flank decided to squabble instead- foreshadowing their contribution to the battle.
Shooting was minimal, whilst an impressive Miscast by an Orc Shaman caused first blood!

The Coalition (as I’ll call the Dwarfs, Empire and Vampire Counts for brevity) on the contrary did very little moving. A few units shuffling position to better cover their comrades.

Magic was poor, only a few Skeletons joined the undead ranks.

The Knights supporting the Thunderers found their charge blocked by the Watchtower itself and repositioned instead, this would cost them dearly.

The Helstorm Rocket Batteries proved their worth, annihilating a hefty chunk of the Squig Herd hoping to make them scatter in later turns.

Turn 2
First charge of the game went to a big unit of Goblin Wolf Riders who took on a, perhaps foolish, forward unit of Zombies in front of the Entrenchments. The Zombies and their attendant Necromancer survived just long enough to spare the doggies any reprisal shooting and setting them up to charge again in their next turn...great...

Ogres smash into the Watchtower attempting to push the Dwarfs off the first objective, they hold firm. The Knights on the other hand are caught reforming and promptly die.

The Orcs and Ogres advance ever closer, though the massive Orc unit (bottom right) has a long way to catch up.

The first of the ambushers, the Goblin Spider Riders turn up in annoyingly the one position not covered by counter-flanking troops...

An Ogre cannon ball aiming for the Helblaster flies overhead only the splash down in the mud a hair length from Lady Drusilla Von Baroch, not pictured- cannon ball.

To add insult to injury, the Goblins bow fire breaks the Outriders, causing them to flee suicidally towards the main enemy battleline.

Victory for the Defenders at the Entrenchments is short-lived as the Wolf Riders return with their big brother’s- Swamp/River Trolls.

The Ogre Bulls rally and prepare to march into the Empire gunline again, whilst the other unit is once again repelled from the Watchtower by the rapidly dwindling Dwarf Thunderers.

More ambushers in the form of two Yeti’s harass the Fortified Manor.

Counter-ambush Dire Wolves barrel into one Yeti hoping to take it down.

They almost manage it too, but the Yeti survives- for this turn at least.

The Vampire Counts battleline shuffles sideways to allow the Ghouls to move forward in preparation for the inevitable overrunning of the Empire gunline positions ahead.

At the game half-way mark the attacking Orcs and Ogres dominate two quarters, as do the Coalition of Dwarfs, Empire and Vampire Counts- but the Coalition still holds all three terrain objectives! 2 vs 5 objective goals!

The main battlelines are about to collide at the centreline in a fight that favours the attackers, the outcome may be about to change...

To add to the attackers morale- the Dwarf Thunderers in the Watchtower are looking very light on numbers!

This turn see’s the attackers finally barrel into the defenders across the battlefield.
Trolls smash into the Empire Handgunners holding the Entrenchment alongside the Wolf Riders seeking revenge against the Skeletons and Dwarf Volley Gun.

A fresh Ogre Bulls unit smashes into the Empire gunline deployed in front of the Fortified Manor.

With predictably brutal results.

The sight is so sickening that the Dwarf Quarellers suddenly remember a stash of Bugmans nearby and evacuate the Fortified Manor.

A similar story unfolds on the right flank as the Trolls scatter the Empire Handgunners at the Entrenchment.

After 9 rounds of combat the Ogres finally slaughter the Dwarf defenders, throwing their banner from the ramparts and replacing it with their own.

Black Knights barrel into the remaining Yeti (the other presumably killed by shooting by this point) to aid the Dire Wolves- the fight is short and bloody.

The Vampire Counts counter-charge on the other side of the battlefield too- the Varghulf and Skeleton unit with Master Necromancer attempting to retake the Entrenchments.

The Dwarf Thane leads his Hammerer guard into the empty Fortified Manor to show the Quarellers how it’s done.

The Varghulf makes short work of the Wolf Riders who once again flee. Though the Skeletons find it far tougher to shift the Trolls.

As the Coalition forces close the noose, surely the Spider Riders can’t escape this time...

Also in that shot is Lee’s fleeing Handgunners, in desperation he requested I position my Cairn Wraith in their path forcing them to take Dangerous Terrain tests to flee through it- hoping the remaining Handgunners would die allowing his wizard to rally....

The Wolf Riders conveniently rally just in front of the huge Orc unit preventing them moving forward...

The first assault on the Fortified Manor see’s the Hammerers suffer horrifically but hold. With the Ogre Tyrant in the unit, this was going to be far tougher to hold than the Watchtower!

The Orc and Ogres turn see the Trolls churn through lots of Skeletons.

Only for them to return!

The Dwarf Quarellers rally and the Black Knights having finished off the Yeti, both attempt to reposition to get back into the game.

The Goblin Hero manages to kill the Helstorm and avoid the charge of the Inner Circle Knights- his comrades are not so lucky!

The Spider Riders are run down! The Grave Guard decide to move forward a little too late to get into the fight whilst the Ghouls and Dire Wolves attempt to aid the recapture of the Entrenchments.

The Spider Riders are frustratingly recycled (technically a fresh unit from the invasion) ready to aid in the fight for the Entrenchment!

The Trolls continue to re-kill Skeletons in record numbers and it falls to the Ghouls to charge in.

More Ogres arrive to finish off the Empire gunline whilst the fight for the Fortified Manor is costly for both sides. The Dwarfs holding for now.

Unexpectedly the Trolls flee, a Skeleton unit attempts to run them down but fails finding itself in front of a fresh unit of Savage Orcs.

In fittingly heroic style the Dwarf Thane is the last man standing as he repels the Ogres from the Fortified Manor!

The Savage Orcs and Spider Riders plough into the Skeleton Warriors.

Quickly pummelling them to dust, both units overrun into the Entrenchment defenders.

The Dwarf Quarellers sneak back into the Fortified Manor, a little drunker, and attempt to redeem themselves in front of their Thane. The Inner Circle Knights canter around the Manor ready to fight.

With wily cunning the Vampire Counts raise a unit of Zombies blocking the route of the Trolls and massive Orc unit- preventing them rushing the Entrenchment defenders in their last turn.

With both armies dominating two quarters each and the Orcs firmly holding the Watchtower it fell on the Fortified Manor and the Entrenchment to decide the battle. Dwarfs holding the Fortified Manor whilst Savage Orcs held the Entrenchment put the Orcs in the lead with 4 vs 3.

The Dire Wolves are easily cut down, the Savage Orcs holding in position to claim the Entrenchment.

Just for the sake of it the Trolls and Orcs obliterate the Zombie speed bump.

The Ogre Tyrant makes one last attempt to capture the Fortified Manor but is repelled- sadly the Dwarf Thane dies in the fight but the Manor is held.

Inner Circle Knights smash into an Ogre unit, whilst Grave Guard and Zombies perform the “totally not gamey” line dance of positioning exactly on the half way line between quarters so they can choose which to be in when counting for dominance...

Despite overwhelming odds the Ogres hold against the Knights charge on a double 1 much to Rich’s amusement and Lee’s annoyance,

So it falls down to the Savage Orcs and the Entrenchment, if they hold the Orcs & Ogres win and vast hordes of the creatures will pour through Black Fire Pass into the rich Empire farmlands beyond.
Last action of the game see’s the unlikely hero of the day- a Cairn Wraith- swoop with deathly silence into the Savage Orcs and....

...causes them to leg it! Raising its Scythe into the air the Wraith holds the Entrenchment and wins the game for the unholy coalition of Dwarfs, Empire and Vampire Counts!

The Orcs and Ogres dominate their own two quarters easily, with the Watchtower firmly secured for 3 objective goals.

The Dwarfs, Empire and Vampire Counts just barely dominate their own two quarters, holding the Fortified Manor quite decisively but claiming the Entrenchments by the skin of their teeth for 4 objective goals.

Really enjoyable game with the battle ebbing and flowing both ways. Surprisingly balanced mission too- considering the back of the book missions used to be notorious for imbalance.

If I was to play again I’d bring more Dwarfs, excellent defensive troops. Though it’d be fun and challenging to try out the Attacker role!

We treated the armies as one big army a side- though each race got it's own General, etc. In hindsight, an advantage to the defenders but not really considering the Dwarf Thane and units all had same Leadership.

one slight difference was that Channelled/stored dice could only be used by the force that generated them.

And i didn't fail to cast the comet's. Richard just didn't want to let me cast any
