A little over due but I am trying to start making a habit of cataloguing my tourneys (i get a lot of good feedback so why not?).

This time its Open War.

For only the 2nd time ever i decided to "grace" the Flame On team with my dubious presence. The last time I was in attendance and despite me and Great Harlequin coming 1st & 2nd we still didn't win the team shield which was the 1st time we lost it as a club since taking it from the 1st Company Vets. Was it me that jinxed things? Who knows?

My list for the day was my ETC 2009 Daemon list (the original 1750pt version of what I took to the GT heat):

GAME 1 - GAVIN (1ST COMPANY VETS) - MARINES - CAPTURE & CONTROL/SPEARHEAD

So I roll up to my first game and am presented with a ton of Ultramarines to face. After my usual 5 mins of explaining to the opponent what Daemons do (still surprised at how little people know about them) Gavin wins the roll and decides to allow me to go 1st while he puts his whole army in reserve.

Turn 1: I start Open War as I start every tourney by getting the wrong wave. At least this time there is no opposing army to threaten me. My Fiends land in a ruined building in the centre of the board near my flag, while all the PB’s end up stung out across the middle of the board with my icon on the left flank. The Flamers scatter back onto a PB unit and mishap, thankfully they go back in reserve (otherwise that would be embarrassing)

Gavin then brings down a lone drop pod with some tactical marines into a wood on my armies left flank, the opposite side to where his objective is. The jump out and discover their bolters are just out of range of some PB’s.

Well that was exciting…..

Turn 2: All my reserves except the errant Flamers arrive which is a nice change. Ku’Gath thumps in behind my Fiends. The Prince scatters all the way to the left (may as well have used the icon there), the Soulgrinder arrive on either side of the big man and Epidemus plus cheerleaders land (off the icon) beside my home flag. I chuck a few pie plates at the tactical marines but the cowards duck behind the trees and I cause minimal casualties. I then sneak a couple of PB units towards them in preparation for my next turn and jog my other units into better positions.

Its at this point we start to think that dice gods have something against Gavin as not a single reserve arrives. Oh dear that is not good news for those Tactical Marines. They shuffle through the woods and open fire on some of the advancing PB’s but my zombies are too tough for boltguns and the turn is over.

Turn 3: Ok so I have most of my army, he has 1 unit. This should be fun Ku’Gath and the Prince (who has flown over to the centre of the board) kill a few marines with their shooting (3 IIRC). I again shuffle units around into better positions. It should be noted at this point that I have 3 Nurgling bases summoned from Ku’Gath in a triangle formation around Gavin’s home base (my team mates commented in passing that this was a bit cheeky). With not much else to do I charge 2 PB units and a Soulgrinder, after fleeting, into the Tactical Marines. Combat is appalling with both sides failing to score any wounds and we are both left feeling a little deflated by the lack of action in this game. Tally = 3

Finally some Ultramarine reserves arrive: the Whirlwind (goes on the left) and a tactical squad in Rhino. So not what Gavin was hoping for then. The Rhino muscles up the centre and out jump some tactical marines who shoot up a nearby PB unit and score a few kills. The Whirlwind fires at the Fiends (it can just see one) but is shot scatters off target. Straight to combat then; thankfully this time my models at least remember how to fight and see off all the tactical marines in short order taking one or 2 casulaties on the PB’s in the process. Some quick consolidation rolls back towards the board centre and jobs a good ‘un. Tally = 5

Turn 4: So once again there is only 10 marines for me to attack. Ok there are a couple of tanks now but still this is going all my way for the time been. Things get even better when my Flamers arrive and land right next to the newly arrived tactical marines. Ku’Gaths pie plate, the Daemon Princes Gaze and 3 breath of chaos blasts later they are all dead. Followed quickly by the Rhino and Whirlwind which get nuked by my Soul Grinders. Tally = 12

Ok at this point I consider it would be good for the rest of the Ultramarine army to arrive as I need to have time to kill them before they claim their home flag and the game ends. The Maccrage crew have other ideas and this time it is only the Assault Squad + Chaplain and last Tactical Squad that arrive. The Assault Squad make straight for the 3 Nurgling bases around their objective and multi charge them and the nearby Icon Plaguebearers. Their Rhino boshes forwards and attempts to block the units flank from any counter charges. Next up is the Tactical Squad who park alongside the Assault Squads Rhino, get out and take aim at those evil flamers. Gavin puts all his available bolter fire into the Tzeentchian Daemons but in a flurry of bad dice on his part and great inv saves on mine only a single Flamer is dead. Things go much better for him in the assault with the PB’s getting hammered by the chaplain and power weapon serg and my Nurglings also take a few wounds. The little guys are left alone to retaliate but despite scoring a few wounds its not enough. Tally = 15

Turn 5: More Nurglings arrive near the Marine flag (I have managed to summon a unit every turn now. If the Marines hadn’t have killed those in combat I would have ran out of bases). My Flamers jump over to the tactical marines and after the Daemon Prince softens them up a little they wipe the squad out to a man. My PB’s try to race towards the Marine flag but a flurry of bad difficult terrain tests and run moves leaves them miles short. Both my grinders then fire at the Assault squads rhino and take it out opening a path for Ku’Gath and the Fiends. Ku’Gath chucks his nurgling bomb into the unit slaying half of them then follows it up with a charge alongside the Fiends who also engage the Tactical squads Rhino. Combat goes as expected with the Chaplain and Assault marines getting torn to shreds. Unfortunately I fail to destroy the Rhino and it is now primed to block off my home objective and claim a draw. Tally = 20

Oh dear this has happened all too often.

To make me even more pessimistic Gavin then pulls out his uber sternguard unit in the drop pod and lands right beside my home base (forgot about them). His Rhino moves 7” to cover his home flag and finally the preads arrive, showing up on the left flank away from the action with LOS to Epidemus and my base. Shooting phase and both preads score kills with the lascannons. Next up is the Sternguard who all put hellfire into Epidemus and his chums. Gavin scores 20/20 3+ hits! Followed by 20/20 2+ wounds!!!!! I strategically elect to go to ground and after 3+ cover saves and 3+ FnP not a single PB falls! GET IN!

Now all I need is a 6th turn to actually reclaim my flag from the Pod and sternguard beside it.

….. 3+ and its Turn 6 – YES!

Ku’Gath and a Soulgrinder stomp towards the Sternguard. Ku’Gath pie plate causes carnage killing all but the 2 powerfist sternguard. The Soulgrinder then fires his vomit flamer at the Pod, catching and killing both remaining sternguard, scoring a glance on the Pod and rolling a 6 to destroy it (open topped remember). WHOOOOO! Then to make my life complete the Prince and last Soulgrinder slam into the final Rhino and after missing with all but 1 attack I manage to immobilise it removing any chance of Gavin contesting my home base (which is a good thing as the other PB’s again shuffled minimal distance to still be short of the marines flag).

Gavin takes this all like a true gent and decides to put all the Preds fire into the Fiends (he couldn’t see Epidemus as Ku’Gath was in the way) and by way of revenge wipes them all out (he scored 10 hits, I failed 10 saves) but it was not enough as the game had ended.

Final score 19-6 (OW scoring is out of 25) to me.

In reflection I think Gavin was too worried about my Daemons and placing his whole army in reserve was always going to make things tough for him. If he had deployed he could have punished me getting the wrong wave and set himself up better for later turns. As it was the luck was very much with me and his reserves rolls cost him the game.

GAME 2 – ADAM/GOBSTYKS – TZEENTCH DAEMONS – KILL POINTS/DOESN’T REALLY MATTER WHAT DEPLOYMENT IT WAS AS ITS DAEMONS –V- DEAMONS

Adams army was an awesome conversion/concept based upon the dark mechanicus using various models such as old epic knights. Combined with my army this was going to be one REALLY good-looking game – shame my camera died.

Oh and fluff wise Tzeentch and Nurgle are arch rivals so this is going to be good on loads of levels.

TURN 1: Adam won the roll and opted to go 1st hoping to get the majority of his army down 1st and make things hard for me by swamping the board. Tzeentch is fickle though and he got his second wave: Wing Prince, Plaguebearers, Screamers, Nurglings and the 2 regular Horror units. Phew. He attempted to land the majority of his army around a central pile of rubble. Everything landed except his PB’s which scattered north towards his board edge and one Horror unit which went south and landed near my edge and some ruins. His army did a few run moves and it was down to me.

Looking at the board and knowing that all the fire power the Tzeentch army can bring in would cause problems if I split my army so instead I chose to land it all on my left flank centred roughly around a large ruined building (top left), some ruins (middle left) and a large wood (bottom left). This side of the board as you can see had the lions share but I figured risking dangerous terrain tests would be worth if for cover saves. I rolled and again the gods were having a laugh at our expense as I also got the wrong wave (that’s twice this tourney). So my Icon unit lands near the building and runs into it. The other 2 PB units land near the ruins, the Fiends join them and finally my Flamers scatter into the woods but are ok. Phew! Nothing scattered off the board. With no real shooting to do I ran my units around into better positions and spread them out in case Adam bombed his flamers.

That was another VERY uneventful turn 1 of Open War.

TURN 2: The Great Sorcerer starts sending in reinforcements: Both Flamer units land near the ruins on my left. His wing prince lands off the PB icon as does Changelings unit. Finally he decides not to use the icon for his Herald and tries to get it close for some shots on my icon unit. It scatters and ends up WAAAY too close to my Icon, within 1” in fact and dies! 1-0 to me Adam then opens up with all available units on my Icon but I cowardly go to ground and only loose 2 PB’s and the Icon is safe. The 2 Flamer units decide to target the nearby Fiends with instead but my cover saves are good (they used warpfire not breath) and I only loose a single Fiend.

Things get even better for me, Nurgle was obviously please with my Icon units accidental slaying of Adams Prince as ALL my reserves arrive at the same time! Epidemus, Ku’Gath and both Grinders all land around my Icon creating a strong phalanx. I decide to send my prince to the other side of the board with a plan to drive the combat weak Tzeetnch Daemons (there is a horror unit and screamers nearby) towards my big stuff and generally prevent them running away. My shooting phase is spectacular to say the least. Ku’Gath dumps his pie plate on the clustered Plaguebearers (ignoring Changelings tricks) killing 4 of them. Next my Daemon Prince shoots the screamers and kills 2. Both Grinders shoot Changelings unit and leave only the trickster and a single horror alive. Finally my shooting phase ends with my Flamers moving up to the “southern” horrors and dumping 3 templates on them killing 7 and then charging into combat to kill the final horror. My Fiends round up my turn charging one of the Flamer units and chopping them into bits before dancing 6” back behind the ruins to end a very successful turn. Tally = 6 / KP’s = 3-0

TURN 3: Tzeentch is obviously angry that my Nurgle horde is causing so much carnage and Adams remaining units arrive: Scribes (separate for some reason), 2nd Herald and both bolt Princes, all coming down around the Changelings icon. Straight to shooting then; The Flamers hop forwards to get some more shots off on the Fiends and slay 2 more – booo. The Horrors on the right try to shoot the Prince while the screamers fly away but he is too damn tough. Adam then fires all the bolts available into one of my Soulgrinders but AV13 is too much and its shrugs them off. With little left to do he charges both the flying Prince and Nurglings into my Flamers, Tzeentch really sucks in combat, well for Adam at least as his prince only kills one flamer. The nurglings bounce whilst I cause 4 wounds on them in return. I win combat, more Nurglings pop and the Prince even takes a wound! Woooo!

My turn begins with both Grinders rolling forwards blasting Adams 2nd Flamer unit apart. Epidemus shuffles towards the Tzeentch lines with the other PB’s. Ku’Gath then marches towards the remaining PB’s and slays them all in combat – RAAARRR! My Prince likewise chases down the Screamers and slays them all. Finally my Fiends rush into the flying Prince in order to help out my Flamers. They hack and slice but Adams 4+ inv it too much. His Prince strikes back and kills the last 2 Fiends (well everything can’t always go my way) but my Flamers are legends causing 4 more wounds on the Nurglings without return drawing the combat. Tally = 11 / KP’s = 5-1

Turn 4: Adam’s army is really starting to come apart and he needs to do something quick. He runs Changeling away from the approaching PB horde into the central ruin. While he sends the scribes, herald and both bolt princes round some woods to take aim at Ku’Gath. 5 Bolts (scribes got double bolt) later and big K has taken 2 wounds whilst 3 of my PB’s fall to the Heralds Gaze. Adams horrors again lay into the Prince and this time a flurry of wounds and piss poor saves on my part see him go down to 1 wound – oh dear! We move onto the epic Prince/Nurglings/Flamers combat and again Adams dice are poor with only 1 Flamer falling. My final Flamer then causes 2 more hits and wounds on the Nurglings– seriously these guys have hit and wounded with every attack, they are gods! I win combat again, the Nurglings finally all go pop and the prince takes a 2nd wound!

I start to consolidate my victory by moving again moving the Grinders towards the Tzeetnch centre where I blast Changeling with one and slay the Scribes with the other. Ku’Gath stomps towards the 2 Bolt Prince, causing a wound on each with his shooting (they are standing together) but then fluffs his slow and purposeful test and is 0.5” out of charge range. My PB horde with Epidemus shuffles through the woods near Ku’Gath but are also too far away to get to grips with the Princes. My Prince flaps into combat with the last Horror unit but again 4+ saves are too much and the assault is bloodless (or ichorless?). Lastly much to my disappointment the final Flamer dies at long last to Adams flying prince who scuttles back towards the centre of the board and all the action. Tally = 11 / KP’s = 7 – 2

TURN 5: There is very little left of Adams army and with little time left he decides to make an effort to keep the game from turning into a massacre. The flying Prince decides there is little more he can do and zooms as far away from everything as his wings can carry him. Its now down to the 2 bolt princes who been too close to Ku’Gath to escape decide its hero time. They fire both bolts off and score a wound before charging into the big man and cause a 2nd, bringing him down to his last one, before he turns round and slaps one of them down to a single wound as well. I win combat but the Princes hold and things look dicey for my head honcho. In lest exciting news Adam once again passes all the 4+ saves his horrors are called to make and the combat is a draw once again.

I try to send all the available PB’s into combat to help Ku’Gath (or at least avenge him) but the shrubbery they are in proves too tricky to negotiate and they all fall short of the charge. My Grinders steam forwards and pop shome shots off at the cowardly flying(away) Prince bringing him down to a single wound. My Prince finally finds a chink in the Horrors armour and knocks a couple down without taking any hits again (5’s to hit and 6’s to wound). Our eyes turn to the main event, the princes lash out but despite hitting on 3’s and wounding on 4’s they only manage a single wound out of 8 attacks. I pick up my Flame On dice and roll for Ku’Gath’s 4+ inv save……… 3! Ku’Gath dies – NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! But the game ends and Nurgle is the victor.

Final score is 7-3 to me but Ku’Gaths death means the result moves from a massacre to a solid 19-6 win.

Looking back Adam made some odd moves with his army, not using the Icon for example with his Herald and not joining the Scribes to a Horror unit for example. Coupled with some bad dice rolls and my armies inherent resilience to the majority of his shooting it was always going to end up coming down to combat to secure a win and my army is better at assaulting than his. Great game, great army and I move onto the last round on table 4 versus a Calgar horde.

GAME 3 - JACK BILLING/SPACE MACHINES - SEIZE GROUND/PITCHED BATTLE

So i am on table 4 for the final round and if i have a good game there is the possibility of some silverware due to my painting scores (which i had already been informed on the QT i had gotten maximum for). I rock up to my table and after a 5/10 min delay my opponent arrives with his Marine horde:

Calgar
10 Terminators with 2 Cyclones
10 Tactical Marines: Melta, Lascannon, Power Fist + Rhino
10 Tactical Marines: Melta, Lascannon, Power Fist
10 Tactical Marines: Melta, Lascannon, Power Fist
10 Devastators: 4 Missile Launchers
Whirlwind
Whirlwind

So that's quite a lot of Marines with the Grandmaster Flash himself leading the show. Its certainly going to be an interesting game; lots of marines for the tally but lots of terminators to cause real pain for my big guys.

The 5 objectives went down pretty much in the staggered line across the boards middle line. Jack won the roll and chose the board edge that contained a fairly sizeable ruined building in the DZ to the left. He then his WHOLE army in there. Terminators to the front, marines behind and the Whirlwinds sitting behind the ruin itself. Lastly he deployed his Rhino on the far right behind a hill.

TURN 1: Jack shuffles his marines and terminators around a little bit (the building extended slightly beyond his 12" DZ) to take up more optimal positions and then it was over to me.

I split the army, as usual all the big hitters + Epidemus in wave 1 and get a 3+ Whooooo! At last the chosen wave! Things then get even better with all my units either hitting or scattering only a couple of inches. By the end of the deesptriking i had surrounded the Marines with a ring consisting of (from left to right) Soul Grinder, Ku'Gath, Soul Grinder, Daemon Prince whilst Epidemus came down in the centre of the board and began to spread out to take 3 objectives simultaneously (they are in a rough triangle). I move to the shooting phase and my luck reaches new levels (or Jacks hits rock bottom): Despite all the marines been in cover Ku'Gath's pie plate kills 4 Devs, 5 Tactical marines and a Terminator(!) The Daemon Prince then kills 2 more Devs leaving only the Missiles alive. My Soulgrinders then both pour their fire into the building and when the smoke clears the marines have lost over half their numbers including 2 of the Lascannons, 2 Power fist Sergeants and 2 Melta guns!!!!!
Tally = 12(!) Objectives 2-0

TURN 2: Jack is shocked to say the least. The game has only began and his army is in tatters. He shrugs at his horrendous inability to pass cover saves and makes some moves to try and re-dress the balance. Both Whirlwinds taget Epidemus's unit but fail to hurt the zombies. He then lays a Lascannon and meltagun into one of the Grinders but its shrugged off. Next he dumps 4 Missiles from the Devs into my Prince but i only take a single wound. 5 Terminators and Calgar add their fire into the it but they all either fail to wound or i pass my armour/inv saves. Jack is not looking best please at this point, he fires his 2nd Cyclone into another Soul Grinder but AV13 is too much. He then charges the same Terminators into combat but before they can even swing the grinder cuts 4/4 down and then all their attacks bounce! Calgar inspires them to stay in the fight but things are not looking good.

I doubted things could have gotten better but they do. All my reserves arrive, the Fiends scatter onto Ku'Gath BUT then roll a 3 so Jack places them in my bottom right corner where they roll a 6 to run towards the left hand lurking Rhino. All my PB's arrive around the remaining objectives and the Flamers go "balls out" in front of the Devs, Terminators and Calgar to score a hit landing on target. 3 Breath of Chaos's later and there are no Terminators or no devs left and Calgar has taken 2 wounds himself (he wasn't attached to a unit). OUCH! Ku'Gath fires his Pie Plate and Breath (he landed that close) killing another combat squad. My 2nd Grinder Flamer the remaining powerfist combat squad but the Sergeant is the only survivor, I then risk the charge but Jack gets some luck at last and takes the Daemon Engine down. The other Grinder fares much better slaying the last terminators. Finally my Prince flaps over to Calgar and promptly chops him in half. Tally = 16 Objectives 5-0

TURN 3 ONWARDS: At the start of Turn 3 Jack had less than 10 models on the board including the 3 tanks. My army quickly mops up his remaining Marines, the big guys take down the Whirlwinds in the later turns and my Fiends spend a few turns speeding along to eventually charge the lone Rhino, which has just tank shocked Epidemus's unit off an objective, and turn it into scrap metal.

The game ends in about 45mins with not a single Ultra Marine or Tank left on the board!

What can be said. This is one of those games where I couldn't fail a dice roll whilst my opponent, in this case Jack, failed everyone he was called to make. There is nothing you can do against that kind of luck. Despite this I feel the game would have gone the same way eventually. Setting up all your models in one big clump when i pack 3 pieplates and several breath of chaos templates is asking for trouble, cover saves or not. Its a shame that luck dictated the game so much as i was really looking forward to an epic end to the tourney and Jack obviously was a good player to get an unconventional army up to table 4. Alas i will have to wait till next time.

The final results were counted with me coming 2nd by 0.5pts thanks to Merlin and Dazedandconfused getting a draw on turn 7 of their table 2 game

More importantly Flame On won the team shield back!!! WHOOOOOO!
