Did my first ToS the weekend before last (lost in the warp in meantime) and had a great laugh with my mates and a couple of us even managed to qualify for the final, where I'm sure we'll get a good going over!

16 Stealers with feeders and scout
3 cheap warriors
8 spinegaunts (WON)

All performed quite well, except when I came up against 2 Eldar forces with Seer Council's on jetbikes and got absolutely creamed both times- those guys just don't die when they are fortuning all their armour and invulnerable saves and witchblades really don't go well with nidzilla! Anybody got any suggestions on how you deal with that sort of problem?

I used to use it all the time, its well worth the risk IMO. At least a double 1 means the power is cast and you don't suffer greatly with the helm and multiple wounds. People probably don't take it in order to shave points.

Fairly new to the forum but thought you might (?) appreciate a bit more detail on my first foray into the GT scene. First up I have to say that everyone I met was really sound, sure a few rules queries were debated but I never had a crossed word with anyone I played and those I met at the event (and bugmans) were all good fun. Heard a few stories about some “picky” players and “dice-moaners” but everybody seemed to be having a great time. I’m sure the final might be a little less relaxed but I don’t intend to let that worry me, as the forum says “it’s a game about war, not a war about a game”!

As for my games, first up I was draw against Chaos. A really well painted “count as” army using Sisters of battle as Chaos marines (2 squads), rapters (1 squad) and havocs (1 squad). All ably supported by a defiler, slanneesh lesser daemons, and Tzeentch winged DP with warptime. The mission was Seize ground and quarters. Game went fairly well with my limited fire managing to luck out at nail his rhino before 2 fexes crashed into his defiler and popped it in midfield general advance down centre went well and when my stealers ambushed his Daemon prince on the flank I felt like an early finish was in order. Sadly his DP and damn warptime had other ideas and butchered my stealers followed a fex, a tyrant and both its guard both I finally shot it back into the warp!. At the end he only had 3 “marines” left on the table and holding one objective and with me holding 2 that was my first win in the bag.

Second was nids!. Broodlord and retinue, Godfex, 3 big units of gaunts, 10 shooty warriors 3 ravenors, 3 Zoanthropres. The mission was KPs and PB. Won initiative and managed to shoot up his BL and retinue early doors. He return some fairly unlucky fire and charged in his ravenors however being out of synapse my fexes quickly ID’d them in CC and with his 2 big CC hitters gone I advanced fore (still steering clear of his Godfex though!!) as we tore into each other I managed to work through his numbers before finally turning my attention to his Godfex (nice two-headed conversion I must say)- and with help of tyrants and stealers eventually managed to down the beast. So with a tabling completed that was two wins- wow never expected that, surely this wouldn’t last……

(….and it didn’t.) Originally, drawn against Marines two Sheffield friends were on top table and wanted to swap so having not played Eldar before I was happy (naïve) to accept. However, as I was to later discover the guy I played was John Swallow who ended up winning Heat 3!!! Still it’s all good experience. John list looked something like this: Farseer (fortune, runes of witnessing) on jetbike with 6 jetbike warlocks (enhance, embolden and 4 destructors), 6 War walkers all with 2x scatter lasers, Eldrad, 2 lots of Fire dragons in 2 wave serpents (Eldrad hid in one as well), and 2 units of foot slogging dire avengers. The mission was home & away and DoW. I set out hoping to hold my objective and frustrate his army however I had not realised just how bad for Nidzilla 48 strength 6 scatter lasers are, especially with “guide” rerolling misses and “doom” rerolling wounds!! He also used fortune to good effect on the seer council and kept his farseer out of the combat (but attached to the unit) and managed to eat his way through the rest of my TMCs. My stealers turned up and managed to down a tank before being barbequed but that was it and a tabling at that. Suffice to say I sought solace with my mates in bugmans and after a skin full of hooegarden suddenly things didn’t seem so bad! But still a good learning experience and hats

Part two!!!

Fourth game was Blood Angels. 2 Venerable dreads (1 Furious), 10 jump troops, 10 footsloggers (+rhino), 5 Death company (+rhino), Chaplain (with DC), 5 Devastators (missiles), 1 Speeder with Mmelta and H Flamer. The mission was seize ground and DoW. Closest game of weekend. A real nice guy and I was pleased to see his name in the final qualifiers for the GT final. Have to confess I was still a little hung over at the start but unlike some other day 2 attendees I HAD been to bed that night and wasn’t in Rock city until 6am……. Things looked a dodgy to start with him combat squading everything and manoeuvring around the objectives whilst chipping away at my big stuff, things went bad to worse when (having turned up early but on the wrong flank) my stealers nailed one combat squad only to be toasted by his land speeder, still his rolls were bad and I managed to have enough left to charge his speeder and pop it, unfortunately the stealers did too good of a job and many went up in the explosion-dooh!. My shooting was doing pretty poor but then I lucked out when his one rhino went pop and he managed to immobilise the second one on dangerous terrain! Sensing a turning point I counter attacked his Death Company, chaplain and jump troops and after some casualties brought them all down. His Furious dreadnought finished off a fex but not before it had been immobilised. Rest of game was chasing down his remaining footsloggers and running my remaining stealers onto the objectives. 2-0 to nids on objectives but still a close fought game.

Fifth game was another pesky seer council on Jetbikes!. Farseer (fortune, runes of witnessing) on jetbike with 6 jetbike warlocks (enhance, embolden and 4 destructors), Eldrad, Holo Falcon (Eldrad hid in this), 1 lot of Fire dragons in 1 wave serpent, Wraithlord, and guardian footsloggers in reserve. The mission was home & away and Quarters. Still got a good going over by the seer council but gave a much better account this time and managed to get the jetbiking council locked in CC from turn 2 however my stealers messed up their runs and got torched by the wraithlord before they could help. Next batch accounted for a guardian squad but maybe I should have sent them to help against seer council (?) as it took 8 player turns 2 tyrants, 4 tyrant guard, 3 fexes and 8 gaunts to break the council in CC but I did eventually do it!! After that excitement my army was pretty much gone and I lost but had a laugh with my opponent along the way, so it’s all good!

Final game was versus smurfs lead by Sicarious. 1 LR Redeemer with Sicarious and 5 honour guard hiding inside, 3 scout bikers, 6 sternguard in a DP, 5 sniper scouts, 10 Tac marines in Rhino and 5 Devastators . The mission was KPs and PB. I think I only won one roll to go first all weekend, lost this one and was then made to go first! He was holed up in a building at other side of the board so advanced and shot as best I could. Then he podded in the sternguard and kraken fired my fexes before ploughing up the redeemer with Sicarious and his honour guard right into “the belly of the beast” i.e. the centre of my army. This initially worked for him and SG and Sicarious/HG managed to carve through a fex, my warriors a tyrant and 2 guard by they run out of breath and “Keith” (one of my trusty fexes) cleaved Sicarious in two! After some shaky shooting my remaining fexes charged and popped the LR whilst helping the reaming tyrant and late arriving stealers to finish off his remaing units. Another tabling to me. We had a couple of rules queries but my opponent was a fair one and the aggressive “devil may care” approach he took made for a really fun game.

So 4 wins and 2 spankings, have to say I was pretty surprised and more importantly really enjoyed the experience. I hear the final is a bit more “serious” (???) but I’m sure I will have fun and really pleased one of my mates qualified too.
