Ok as mentioned in a previous thread i might dig out battletech over xmas. To those who have only played the computer game etc here is a little overview of how the game works.

basically you have a mech, or team of mechs based between 20 and 100 tons each.
Each of these mechs have a payload of weapons armour and engine that is allocated paid for in tons.

The weight of the engine is dependant on the size of the mech and the speed is wishes to move, for simplicity the game uses a hexagonal board for gaming on with each hex roughly 1" in size.
The movement value determines the amount of squares that can be moved as well as turns so a mech with a move of 4 can turn 2 hex faces and move forward 2 hex's. etc.
Due to the power to weight ratio smaller mechs tend to have a greater move value. Mechs can also run with is 1.5 times their normal move.
Moving up and down hills, through terrain and water adjusts the movement cost.

A mech is made up of 8 or 9 locations (slightly hazy on this!)

The head (Where the pilot sits!)
The arms (used for carrying weapons armour and ammunition!)
Upper and Lower Legs (can also be used for carrying weapons armour and ammunition!)
Central and Left/Right Torso (hardpoint of the mech locating the engine and additional used for carrying weapons armour and ammunition!)

Armour is purchased in points of armour per ton, this is then allocated to area's of the mech with the head having a maximum of 9 points of armour, other locations can have much more. The internal locations also have a fixed internal armour value. which i remember being 3 for the head.

Shooting lowers the armour value on each location and once the armour value is stripped of the internal armour value is lowered, once the internal armour value is reduced to zero the location no longer exists.
Internal damage also can cause critical hits which can further hamper the game play of the mech, such as movement rate modifiers, armour explosions and weapons systems damage.
Once a location is destroyed hits to that location move to the next attached location so for example If the left arm is shot off the damage then moves to the Left torso.

Each mech has a variety of guns that it can be armed with
These can be classified as into the the following groups

Laserguns
They require not ammunition but produces heat. i will cover heat later.

Missile launchers
Each missile launcher is classed into 2 basic type Short Range Missile (SRM) launchers and Long Range Missile Launchers (LRM)
LRM's fire more missiles and have longer range, but tend to have fewer loads/ton of ammo. 1 ton of LRM 20 (fires 20 missiles per shot!) ammo might only have 8 shots /ton.
SRM's fire less missiles at shorter range and have more loads/ton of ammo 1 ton of SRM 6(fires 6 missiles / shot) could have 15 shots/ton *cant remember the exact numbers on these)
When a missile launcher hits your then determine the amount of missile that hit/shot. The average usually being just over half.
produces less heat than a Laser

Autocannons
Fires a projectile burst of shots each type of cannon has a number of shots fired and a range, the more shots fired the shorter the range.
This requires ammo purchases similiar to the Missile Launchers

Flamers
Do little damage but do produce heat on the target.

All shots are modified by movement of the firing mech and the total distance moved of the target, so a fast moving mech shooting at a streaking mech has a very small chance of hitting, but a mech standing still shooting another mech standing still has a higher chance of hitting.

Heat
Everything a mech does produces heat, as standard a mech can produce 10 heat points safetly. once it goes above 10 then you keep a track of the extra heat created the more heat created the greater chance of things going wrong like ammo exploding. if a mech produces 30 extra heat points (and survives!) it auto shutdowns.
Extra hit sinks can be fitted to mechs so that it can lose the heat quicker. Some mechs are so balanced that if they shoot all their weapons they can always dissapate the heat.
Water improves the dissapation of heat.

Jump jets
mechs can be fitted with jump jets, as well as being harder to hit and avoiding movement modifiers, this also allows mechs to attach other mechs on landing.
this is known as Death from Above! however this has risks to the mech performing the maneuver as well

Punching and Kicking
Mechs can also get physical, Power ranger stylee. A punch to the face from the larger mechs will destroy most mechs, but hittiing the head is quite hard.
Mechs who lose their legs have trouble standing up and walking.

There is already a number of standard mechs that can be used. some of these are awesome, some are rubbish.
But there is a mech creator which is excellent as all the standard mechs are created using this method, giving you free reign to create the mech you want to use.

Apart from having to record each mechs status individually, the only real flaws with this game is that it takes longer to play than ur average wargame
and the original hex boards leave the game looking a bit too kiddish, however i believe that its pretty easy to convert the rules into none hex mode and use normal terrain.
Also the original game came with card stand up miniatures, ral partha have made some metal (and i hear plastic!) versions but these are a bit epic like for my liking.

I hear rumours that this is now being given a new lease of live as Classic Battletech with loads of new stuff apparently either out or coming out.

The models are actually a lot nicer in the flesh although a little two tall and thin in the main. Also being metal with a few small fiddly bits they are an absolute bugger to build and quite a challenge to pin. but at an average price of £4-5 for a model that stands between an orc and an ogre, im not complaining.
Although i did buy the 25mm hex bases for them as well.

They are nearly built and will undercoat this week, but i have been trying to get other projects finished.

I`m definately interested, especially at that price for a force, but I don`t know enough to actually buy anything or make useful comments. If you`re willing to do a tutorial or starter session I`ll probably buy into this.

If we do about 400 tons each i might even splash out and buy the rest of the models we need just so they all look good.
Of course what i could do is just set up 2 armies with the same mechs in each and then its a straight fight.

Lee and I had a game of battletech the other week 2 mechs on 2.
As it was snowing we decided to play in the kitchen on the Hex boards and it actually played pretty damned well (still making a couple of rules errors but we are reading as we go!)

His awesome couldnt hit the side of a barndoor (Missed about ten 7+ to hit) but it was great when i caused an ammo explosion on his prone catapult.
Eventually managed to take down his awesome with a combined attack my awesome on his cat.

Looking forward to the next game as my mechs are now nearly fully painted. (I now have 16 mechs! they now need their own case!)
