Well played the Leeds heat of the YOT today, a whole 10 players turned up
Took my twin Lash Prince Chaos, same as before

Game 1 v Chaos Lots of City Fight terrain on the Table, Capture and Control,
Dawn of War

Prince +Warp Time+Wings+Mark of Tzeench
10 Berserkers+Champ+Fist (ended up in the Landraider)
10xCSM+Rhino+Champ+Fist (no Special Weapons)+Rhino
10xCSM+Rhino+Champ+Fist (no Special Weapons)+Rhino
Vindicator+Possession
Land Raider
2xObliterators

He rolled for sides and won. deployed everything but the Olbits, Rhinos on the left
near his objective, Vindicator and LR+Berserkers on the right threatening my objective

I just deployed the Oblits opposite his objective and left everything else in reserve

Turn 1

He came bounding forwards nothing to shoot at

I shot at the Vindicator and took the battlecannon off it, everything else
missed or was saved

Turn 2

He came forward again with everything but the Vindicator which went backwards
1 unit of CSM deployed

One of my DPs+ 1 troops in Rhino and one walking came on.
immobilised 1 Rhino and took down 4 troops from the unit he deployed

Turn 3

His Oblits arrived, and destroyed my Rhino (not sure why he shot this)

My other DP arrived

Shot up his Oblits, and then shot up his DP took 2 wounds off it with a lot of
(crap)shooting. Decided to LAsh it towards my forces DP1 rolls 11, DP2 rolls 2x1
and inflicts a would but the DP moves 6" towards me

I assult it with DP, 2xOblits and 8 CSM and.....take 1 wound off it. The stars of this
monumental failure being my Oblits with 4 PF attacks 3x2 and 1x1 to hit !!

Turn 4

Moves his LR forwards and deploys 10 Berserkers and the CSM leave the Rhino

No Shooting. Berserkers assault the Oblits the CSM my DP.

I go first and finally kill his DP with my DP. Berserkers assault he Oblits and take
3 wounds. CSM take 1 wound off my DP in return I take down 3 of his CSM...drawn combat

Final unit arrives and hides near my objective

my CSM assault the Beserkers as does my second DP...a lot die, Oblit is still there.

Kill a couple more CSM

Turn 5

He moves towards my Objective with LR, Rhino and Vindator but nothing within range

in the Assault, the Berserkers die, DP heads off towards his objective

In the other assault he is down to 2 Marines.

At this point I decided it would be a good idea to remove my Brain !!! as I seem to have
lost count of the turns

My DP goes for his objective, My Oblit goes for his LR

My Rhino with the scoring unit inside decides to move forwards but not towards my
objective ..leaving it outside 3"

My DP lashes his unit out of cover near his Obejctive, Single Oblit MUlti-Meltas the
LR from 1" and rolls a 3 on the penetrating table..oh good

At this point I remove the rest of my brain. Instead of shooting 4 oblits at the
6 troops standing in the open I decide to shoot the LR. The troops take down the Rhino
by shooting it up the bum

LR is fine.

I assault the Unit near the objective with a prince with 2 wounds and kill 2, and of course
the PF kills my Prince

And of course the game ends. He only killed 5 of my models and I had killed all but 5 of his
but he held one objective

So I manage to turn what was a surefire draw into a minor loss..a) thru rolling crap dice
b) by removing my brain...

Anyway really good game against a nice young guy...in his first Tournament

Star for unit me.....nothing really

Game 2 v Marines Seize Ground, 5 Objectives, Spearhead

Command squad in Razorback (TL Hb) (all power weapons)
5xSternguard 2xML
5xSternguard 2xML
5xSM with Plasma Cannon
5xSM with Plasma Cannon
5xSM with Flamer
5xSM with Bolters
2xWhirlwinds
3xLand Speeder Typhoons (quke nasty now as can fire Krak)

We place counters, he puts 2 in one quarter then rolls for sides and wins...he has 3
within his movement quite easily, so I am on the back foot from the start

He Deploys and is quite cagey about telling me what is in his army

He leaves the Typhoons in reserve

I deploy 4 Obliterators and leaver everything else in reserve

Turn 1

He goes first and shuffles about a bit..nothing

I shoot and manage to stun the Razorback...wooppeee !!

Turn 2

He gets 2 Typhoons, move 5

1 does a Deep Strike, 1 comes on from the table edge
He shoots 1 Typhoon and takes out on Oblit...thats the end of the shooting

My reserves, 1 DP, Troops in Rhino (2xPlasma), last 2 Oblits. I bring them on on the right hand
side of the table near the rest of his army

Rhino at the front DP and 2 Oblits behind it, smoke the Rhino.

Lash one Unit of sternguard out of cover and shoot them with the 2 lately arrived Oblits, I miss !!
Single Oblit takes down Typhoon 1. Stun the Razorback again.

Turn 3

His last Typhoon arrives. For some unknown reason he shoots the whole of his army at the Rhino
which is left totally unscratched (smiles)

DP 2 Arrives along with other troops in Rhino.

DP1 moves forward 12", Rhino 1 moves forward 12" troops deploy ,Rhino 2 comes on 12" and
smokes (went outside the building) troops deploy near an objective
Oblits shuffle around a bit.

DP1 lashes the 5xSternguard towards him. DP2 sits there. Troops 1 shoot the 5xSM to buggery
Oblits once again do very little.

DP1 Assaults and kills a couple but stays in combat

Turn 4

Razorback move forwards with 2 units mincing behind. Keeps shooting the Oblits but to no
effect Whirlwinds Now have some troops to shoot and they catch one whole unit and kill 4
but they are okay. Kills one Rhino

DP finishes the Sternguard in CC

Walking troops arrive and make for objective on my side,DP1 Jumps forwards to second Sternguard.
DP2 Jumps forward Troops 1 start wandering into a crator. Rhino1 move forward towards one objective.

DP2 lashes unit in cover but only rolls 4 so they are still in cover. Troops shoot them but to little effect

Oblits yet again do nothing

DP1 Assaults Sternguard kills 3, they break and are run down DP has 2 wounds left and is sitting in 4+ cover

Turn 5

He zooms 2 Typhoons forward to contest the objective in the middle and the one on my right, and sends the coomand squad
Razorback to the middle to give mobile cover. Whirlwinds shoot and kill a couple of marines. He kills DP 1 with...
2 bolter shots ....bugger that was my banker for clearing an objective gone.

At the moment he has 2 Objectives and I have non...hmmmmm

Okay walking troops move forward and claim an uncontested 1. Troops in terrain move forwards to the far right objective
they are now out of terrain.

I then have to make sure I take down the Speeder on my nearest objective. I shoot the unit at it
....and miss...I shoot the Oblits at and miss. I shoot the Rhino at it and miss. I shoot the last two Oblits at it..
and it goes down ..phew !!

DP2 lashes unit out of cover away from objective and DP and troops assault it, and kill it. Troops consoldiate within
3" of objective

I now hold 2 opponent holds 1 with 1 contested

Turn 6

He goes for it again, Speeder comes fast to contest my nearest objective, Whirlwinds move to make sure
they contest one objective. Command squad Razorback leaves centre objective to go for my left obejctive. Tac unit goes
for the centre

It is now a draw 1 each with 2 contested

DP moves for furthest unit. Troops move into terrain.

I tank shock the unit on the furthest objective but it is not 3" away.I lash the unit near the Rhino
away and bring it within Assault range.

I shoot everything at the Speeder and fail to take it down

I assault the unit with the DP kill 3 it breaks and is run down, I consolidated back towards the Whirlwinds

At the moment I have 1 objective and 2 contested

turn 7...don't get this far very often

Fortunately my opponent makes 2 vital mistakes here...he moves his command unit towards my left obejctive
deploys the unit and starts firing at my troops. He kills a couple and they hold on the moral check
thanks to a re-roll

at the moment

He forgets/chooses not to move the Whirlwinds of or the speeder.....(smiles...lots of auto assault hits) but did move
a 3 man unit to contest the centre objective

This is not good...at the moment he holds 1 and 3 are contested...bugger

Any way....

The Oblits/Troops take down the speeder, 1-1
The DP moves to one Whirlwind 5 Auto hits, 5 Penetrates..dead
The troops powerfist assaults the other Whirlwind 3 Penetrates...dead 2-1
the Rhino bless its cotton socks Tank shocks the unit off the middle objecive..and they break...2-0
the other objective remains contested...

A really excellent game

Star unit..Rhino1..took the whole of 1 turn of opponents shooting and then tank shocked 2 units off objectives

Game 3

Opponents army Sisters of battle....couldn't see the point of it

4 big units on foot, 2 Exhorcists, 1 heavy weapons (3 HB)....to what purpose ??

Not even going to talk about....played some young rules lawyer who did not know the rules

Started off ny telling me I could not leave my whole army in reserve...and down hill from there

Ended up playing speed 40k game over in 50 mins minor win to me

...

I think the young las who beat me in the first game won and was quite excited as it was his first Tourney and
he had played well

2/3rds of a good day out.

First question is ...why not ??

I keep losing the rolloffs for first place, also with the objective based missions there is benefit to going second, that is how Graham and I did so well at the Doubles GT by playing the missions

Of the tables I played on at the weekend one was good and had plenty of terrain, the other one had terrain but very low level, so there was nowhere I could hide.

In the last game the player (?) had 2 exorcists, I left eveything off the table..he did not know what to do. When oblits came on 1 exorcist died the next turn the remaning one took out 2 Oblits had that happened the first turn as well I would had none left and would most probably have lost the game.

Also the army only does well if the Rhinos are intact and moving my troops forwards, if I leave them open to being shot at somewhere at my table edge I am screwed if they go down, as walking marines do not do a lot.

Of the 3 games I played I think I might have done better in game 1 as there was lots of terrain and might realistically have cleared one half of the table....alos I beleive one of the missions has night fight turn one which may alos make a difference

Yes in Dawn of war it is better to just leave everything off and bring it all on turn 1.

Looking at the first game, why not start things on the table. To shoot he has two oblits and a LR. You can hide your oblits well enough and your DPs behind your rhinos, in fact, I'd put your DPs in front of your rhinos to give the rhinos a cover save as the DPs already have a 5+ save at worst. If the LR shoots, its not flying towards you at full pelt. If you then manage to gain the initiative, you're sorted. If not, you have your full army on the table to kill his with. With reserves you always run the risk of nothing coming on turn 2 and you're screwed trying to get to his objective(s). I'd rather have a rhino killed on turn 1 12" from my board edge than in the same place two turns later.

Did so well at the doubles? Didn't you have negative VPs at one point? Doesn't sound very fun to me last turn objective grabbing with falcons (when they didn't die to the first shot at them)!

I just can't imagine you being able to play very aggressively in half the missions with putting everything in reserve. If the game ends turn 5, you've only played 3 real turns. What's the point in that?

Actually I did start this with the Oblits on the Table..as I often do if there is enough terrain to hide them properly...this makes my opponent think and gives me shooting all 5(?) turns.

Understand what you are saying here..fair point but if my Oblits have had 2/3 rounds of shooting before I arrive it can save me loosing what are perceived as easy Kill point

We got 5 wins out of 7 games, with one of the weakest armies there..I think that is good and where within one passed Moral check of getting a draw against Myles and Colins Chaos/Ork Biker cheese that is good !!. The VPs counted for nothing the misisons gave us the 5 wins...we can't all run off to the latest cheese list (ha !!)

Yep..the point is I have limited my opponents scoring and the objective of the game is to win...at the GT you only need to win the game by one objective/kill/point...a win is a win whether it is 1-0 or 5-0.

Until GW and other Torunament Organizers up their terrain to be 5th ED (ie some proper LOS blocking terrain) being in resrve is a good tactic.

At the YOT there where 2 Necron Players.....there was not one table on which you could have hidden a monolith and due to the height of the terrain most of the tables would not have given the Monolith a cover save as it would not have been 50% obscured

When Tourney organizers sort their terrain out the game tactics will change...until then .....
