Something that I've been wondering for a while regarding the placement of units in CC.

My reading of the book is that you can get 2 units max into CC with one enemy unit but don't neccessarily have to. Is that right?

So for e.g. if I land a thunderhawk full of assault marines as part of an engagement, I can get 8 stands of assault marines in base contact with 8 stands of the enemy - particulary easy with assault marines as they can deploy 15 cms away from the thunderhawk due to their jump pack. Since each enemy unit CC-ed loses their ZOC, the next stand of assault marines can bypass it and CC a further unit without having to double up on each stand of enemy before going onto the next one.

Wheras with terminators who can only deploy 5 cms from the TH, I may actually only be able to reach 2 units of enemy in CC, so would naturally double up. Or if there was only 1 unit within 5cm of the TH, 2 terminators could get into CC but 2 would have to FF.

Correct?

Concerning War engines and barging:

War engines can get 2 units in CC for every point of damage it has, so for e.g. would it be ok to barge 3 enemy units with the TH, leaving 1 "Space" (so to speak) for the Terminators/ Assault marines to disembark from.

Lets say for e.g. I wanted to air assault a Leman Russ tank company. The way I understand the rules, I could barge 3 Russes with the TH, and then put an assault marine in CC with the remaining 7 tanks, with one tank having 2 stands of assault marines in CC (Providing they were all within range, etc).

So all 10 tanks would be in CC and would only be able to use their 6+ CC value. Is that right?

Yeah I think the closest that you can come to barging here is landing directly on top of enemy units, and forcing them to the edge of the flyer model/base (unless there's something else in the rulebook about that, I don't have it infront of me).

Problem with that though is, as you point out in your other post Curis, if you contact enough enemy units that there is no way to physically escape from the transport (owing to base sizes) then you're just as screwed as if you contacted 2*DC...

Who gets to place the barged stands out of interest?

I think the 'barging' rules in general are one of the poorer parts of Epic. You shouldn't be allowed to 'shove' your opponent's models out of the way or move them during a wargame- that way lies fudging and dispute.

To compensate War Engines I'd scrap the Firefight/CC special rule for them, so they could spread CC as every other Epic unit does.

Curis, you missed Meph's point.... .if your final approach is more than 30cm you can make up to a 45 degree turn BEFORE you land to tweak what you actually land on and so barge.

I like the WE choosing CC or FF and the concept of barging- it is needed IMO. But a Si points out how the models are barged and who does it needs formalising.... probably along with WE basing.

Or you just roll with it and hope no one abuses these little oddities..... I'm still realing from the idea that 4 stands of infantry can trap infantry in 4 transports.

Also a little confused as to when measurement are taken from the model and when models are taken from the base? Do people play by the letter and measure ranges from gun barrels?

And do you let an opponent put broken formations within 15cms of enemy and then have them "killed" or do you point it out and don't let them? Similar to "comms failure" I'd always assumed this was just ignored and everyone pointed mistakes out as a matter of course?

I've always played from the edge of the base for all things even though I know the rules absurdly measure from individual models...

With regards to 'schoolboy' errors like moving within 15cm whilst Broken, or a list of many other rules mistakes- I always inform my opponent (often to my own defeat..) and let them re-do it.
I want to win my games by outplaying my opponents within the rules of the game (i.e. by outmaneouvering, etc), not by playing who can remember all the rules the best.

Actually it is really ambiguous, I've just re-read the rules.

section 4.2.5 says:
"If this option is
chosen then the aircraft and any units that disembark may enter
enemy zones of control as if they were charging."

Implying that you treat the approach move as a standard engage move (bearing in mind that once landed you have a move of 0).

and section 1.7.3 says this about moving through units:

"Units are never allowed to cross directly over
an enemy unit, even if it has lost its zone of control."

Which (to me at least) implies that you can't land directly on top of units, since you have to obey the 'standard' engagement move rules and are free to land inside the enemy zoc, but not directly on top of them.

On Flying WE - As they ignore ZOC right up to the point they land they can use their final turn to position themselves while barging. And if you don't allow a landing craft to barge then it should get some form of squash attack against stuff it lands on!

From memory I think Si wanted to make screening formations with scouts a possibility when the protected formation is air assaulted. Its all very complex when this happens and was a long debate when it last popped its head up!
