Well, Si and I finally gave this a whirl last night.

Once the confusion calmed down slightly it was quite enjoyable, there certainly is more going on than a game of US, and it seems that the worst excesses of the exploding ships have been stripped out of the game.
I liked how the two fleets felt different even though we were only playing with starter sets I would imagine the differences get more pronounced with more units.
Although there was still quite a bit of randomness involved towards the end of the game (once I'd got a vague feel for what my guys did and the basic mechanics) I got the sense that my decisions were actually making a difference (as opposed to yet another Naval game I've had a go at recently). I'm looking forward to having another go in a few weeks

Impressions on the ruleset were that it was pretty poorly written (the new version might be better, but unless it really takes off I'd resent buying it as it will probably be obselete next year), and I'm sure on close insepction fairly open to interpretation. It's a fun on a weeknight game, not a hardcore tournament game imho.

Pretty much agree. The models are very good, fun to paint, and relatively cheap.

The intent of the rules has a lot of potential, the core dice mechanic (4+ to hit, 6 gives two hits and extra roll), the much simplar turning circles (compared to BFG angle turns for example) and the basic rules provide a good grounding to layer on submarines below the ships, aircraft above the ships and tanks rumbling around on land- all potentially within the same game. Aircraft don't feel tacked on but a viable part of the game- theoretically your naval force could be 50% planes.

Based on the same game engine as Uncharted Seas- Dystopian Wars feels like the much more detailed second release of the game. With Uncharted Seas everyone basically had the same stock ships, firing the same stock gun batteries with each player squeezing in one dragon or one hot air balloon to break the tedium.

I've noticed already Dystopian Wars has Rockets and planes that can be reacted too with Ack Ack fire, Mines and submarines that can be reacted to with Concussion Charges, and Shields which absorb some of the incoming fire. This ability to counter the opponents action is the difference between US and DW for me, makes you feel like your defending your models, whereas in US I could just leave my opponent to it and he would eventually tell me if it's sank or not.

That said the format of the rulesbook is terrible.

Rather than say for example, "A D6 roll of 4+ is needed to pass a Break Test. A failed test causes X."
Dystopian Wars (and Uncharted Seas) will do a Monty Python Holy Hand Grenade of:
"When a ship needs to pass a Break test, but not when it does not, it must roll one dice, not two, definitely not three. This one dice, not two die, must roll a 4, or a 5, or indeed a 6. Not a 3, or a 2. And especially not a 1! Below are four examples of ships passing a Break test"
Then what a failed break test will do is determined on a random page on the other side of the book. Awful. Helps when half the index ref pages don't match where they should be.

I'm definitely up for another game in two weeks or so, but I really want to find time to go through the rules and condense them into the 3-4 pages they should actually be for a quick crib/reference sheet first!

I'm very tempted by Vanguard Submarines and an Illustrious Sky Fortress for 1000pts, then to cram a Majesty Dreadnought and some Agincourt Gunships in at 1500pts! Happily I don't feel the need to drop any of the models from the starter fleet, though I will be taking a lot more shields on them!

It can get ridiculous at short range, I think Primary Turrets suffer a -1 to hit at Range Band 1 which might reduce incoming.
