I'm quite looking forward to giving it a go. Hopefully I can get all the bits together and painted in time.

Do you really think it needs more monoliths? I did ponder and agonise over the number of monoliths vs the number of activations and different abilities. I thought 7 portals would probably be enough with 3 Pylons who'll make it hard to get at them and close down the battlefield.

More monoliths would mean either 1 less Pylon or losing the flayed ones and I kind of like the abilities that they bring. 3 Pylons means that everywhere you fly on the board you'll have to take 2 shots and they can overlap their overwatch, whilst I'm hoping that the scouty, infiltrating Flayed ones who don't need a portal to get onto the field will be quite tricksy.

Having reflected a little on the kicking that Mike gave me today and the chat we had afterwards I'm actually starting to come round to his way of thinking on the Infantry Phalanxes.

It didn't matter that I had 2 more activations as the Monolith fms are too hard to kill and I just couldn't take on the Larger Necron Phalanxes, so the advantage didn't really count for much. Whilst I have done well with my current Necron list against the Flame On crew we do tend to run quite small and elite armies. I've played world eaters, Tau and Marines in the warm up to the Mangle and the smaller phalanxes have been more than sufficient.

Today though I ran up against tougher units like Revenents, mounted guardians and larger Phalanxes. These are pretty tough going for smaller Phalanxes to deal with and I've been reflecting on what the hell I'd do against a tank co for instance?

Whilst I could potantially use the activation advantage to whittle down the activations and then gang up on the tank co it's relying on not having much killed, everything being in the right place and broken units nearly always rallying. Today was a good example of things not going to plan, lol.

As an aside I really enjoyed it and have definately taken learning points. This is a new army to me and I appreciate the experience and the discussion afterwards. I definately think I'll do better next time having had some good solid necron experience.

Sadly though it does leave my list looking like a carbon copy of Mike's. I've sat and played with it for a good half hour now and simple arithmatic pretty much leaves it as the best build as far as I can work out:

Even down to the Flayer lord, lol. I did consider the lord for the Destroyers but the flayers tend to get beaten up on the most and would really benefit from the leader. Additionally when they do launch an engagement, it tends to be against a juicy Warhound or something else quite nice (They killed 2 today, woot!) and the Extra MW is generally more needed.

I do still favour Destroyers over Obelisks because they can use portals which is a really good way of getting around their poorer movement and because they can regenerate. Their support fire is much better too, although the extra firepower of the Obelisks is very tempting indeed. Fearless is nice too. *Strokes chin*

Which is basically the same list except that I've sacrificed one Pylon and consequently 1 activation to beef up all of the Infantry units. I've also had to re-jig the SC a bit because of BTS issues. I do rather like the idea of the SC being on the table more or less from the word go.

Mine was the one with the BTS/SC infantry phalanx and it did quite well. I lost to Christian and his siegemasters but won the other two games and managed to keep the. Gs formation relatively safe both times.

I have had games where the BTS formation gets focused on third turn precisely to break it and get an easy BTS point, and it's always a struggle trying to make sure the SC is on board end of each turn to help with rallying. It's a price you have to pay though to use the large phalanxes I do, and I really like them for their extra killingyness in assaults. The only other option is to use a large war engine, so I may try a couple games with the aeonic orb or the tentacle rape barge* to see how they do.

I've used the tentacle barge quite a bit at 4k - is very nice :-), but restricts you to a single Pylon and is a bit pricey imho to use at 3k.

Yeah, I think the BTS issue is just something I'm going to have to take on the chin.

I could try and put the SC into the smaller fm and beef up the BTS with a pariah but I really want all 3 fms to have maximum combat power. It really was quite an improvement last night taking immortal phalanxes against Aspect warriors and kicking their arses, really hard. The immortal Phalanxes have the same combat power as a tac squad and a dev squad put together!

I'm fairly confident that the above combination should really put pressure onto objectives and cause significant enough damage to the enemy in the first 2 turns that it takes some of the flak from the SC/BTS.

We'll see though, still experimenting and plenty of time before Nov.

I just can't see any way around it at 3000pts. It's a real pisser. 4K is easy because tentavled doom comes into play.

On the plus side, at least there are other armies out there that suffer the same problem and they don't regenerate.
