Sack it, got nothing better to do after spending a day job hunting and waiting till 6 before i go and see what wargaming in York is like so may as well write up some batreps for the club challenge.

As most will know i have recently been very excited about all things Daemon related, more specifically of the smelly kind, and have been using Wandering Rogues army whilst i slowly get mine off the ground.

The long term aim of this army is to take it to Germany for the ETC so therefore it is going to each and every tourney i can get to between now and then. The first outing was the recent WPS Club Challenge with the following list:

So with a monstrous creature heavy Epidemus army you can all probably guess what the goal of each game was

GAME 1.

I rolled up to the Adelphi with a fair few of the Flame On team all bright eyed and bushy tailed for the first time in years and who should my 1st opponent be other than my ETC team captain Alex West

Now Alex had decided to do an army swap with Castigator and so for the weekend was using his Sisters instead of the Space Pups we all know him for. He said he hadn't played any practice games and didn't even know were to find the Acts of Faith rules in the codex (no really he didn't!!). Suffice to say i got the feeling Alex would have sooner had an "easier" opponent than me given that he has yet to beat me in 40k. I on the other hand was keen to show him just how good Daemons could be and that it is not madness for me to take them to Germany over my usual Pink Nids.

The mission was the multiple objective one (yes i still aint learnt the names of the 5th Ed missions) with Dawn of War setup and after some pointless dice rolling for board edges etc (obejctives were all across the centre of the board and i had Daemons whilst he is mech) i kindly let Mr West go first.

So straight to my turn then?

True to the form of all my practice games i got the totally wrong wave down (2 PB units, Flamers and Fiends) with the flamers scattering 11" off board and killing themselves - Yay go me! whilst everything else ran to take cover in a nice big central wood.

Turn 2 and Alex boshes 2 of his Rhino's full of sisters up the board and together with both exorcists they reap a heavy toll on my PB's killing one unit outright (grrrr divine guidance) and leaving only 3 standing from the 2nd. Eeeep not good.

Thankfully once again true to the form of all my practice games my ENTIRE 2nd wave arrives on turn 2! Ku'Gath and both Princes land rather close to the 2 sister units who had just killed the PB's. One shooting phase later and there was an abject look of disgust upon Mr West's face as all 20(!) sisters were dead and my tally was maxed out. YAY go me!

Alex never really recovered from this pretty heavy blow and the rest of the game involved my fiends doing a benny hill with his 2 exorcists up and down the board charging them each turn and preventing either from firing whilst Ku'Gath and the princes killed off the seraphim in combat and then chased the final sister unit in a rhino to ground and gobbled them up.

Final score was a 30-0 to me.

So moving onto game 2 and after seeing the draw i was full of confidence knowing it was kill points which Nurgle does well at and was even more confident when i saw my opponent was Andy from Northern Warlords with the Rhino heavy Pedro army Josh/Exodite had just faced.

Oh how my confidence was to fade....

I won the roll for 1st turn and so sporting as ever allowed Andy to go first which led to him shuffling his tanks a couple of inches sideways in a big phallanx on a hill.

So my turn then Oh look once again i got the wrong wave. Oh look and the flamers have scattered off the board, thankfully they went back into reserve this time. My turn then involved the fiends running behind a wood to avoid his army whilst my PB units shuffled forwards.

Andy jostled his tanks around and fired some shots from the top felling a couple of PB's but otherwise was playing it cagey waiting for my big guys to arrive.

What happened next was 5 turns of woeful dice to say the least

Turn 2 saw my Princes arrive who managed to immobilise a rhino with a luck gaze shot whilst again my PB's shuffled forwards. Andy rolled his rhino's around and began shooting the big guys. The Pread failed to cause any wounds as did the vindicator. Nice. Next a load of melta and combi melta shots from the 4 rhino hatches again caused no wounds. Looking good. Andy then fired 4 Stormbolters which killed one prince and knocked 2 wounds of the second!!!! WTF! 8 S4 shots causing 6 wounds! Lady luck looks like she is going to favour you and then just takes it all away.

My turn 3 and NOTHING arrives.... oh dear. The loan prince charges a rhino whilst the fiends do or die vs another. Combat sees me nuke the rhino with the prince and take out a 2nd with the fiends. Not too bad, 2 KP's to me. I am in the lead.

Oh wait its Andy's turn; so thats the fiends dead to massed sternguard shooting (2+ to wound = ouch) and the prince is down to 1 wound. Could have been worse i guess, at least all his units are out of rhino's for when Ku'Gath arrives on a 2+

...... no Ku'Gath doesn't arrive, neither does Epi and his chums. In fact only the flamers do. Ok gotta go balls out here as my dice really don't like me. Flamers hit right in front of a tactical squad and promptly cook them with breath of chaos. Ok so far so good, Prince charges the pred who hadn't moved last turn and scores..... 1 glancing hit which stuns the tank! That's 5 S5 2d6 pen rolls against AV10. Balls.

Andy's Turn 5 and at least the prince is hidden by the pred from his army. Unfortunately the flamers are not and a few bolter shots later they are gone along with a PB unit (goddamn wounds on a 2+ is a lot more brutal than i thought). Was still in the game though with my prince, could kill the pread and move onto something else. 4 more autohitting attacks and nope not a SINGLE roll on the damage chart. What the hell is this pred made of?!?!?!?!?!

Still hoping i can get back into the game now that Ku'Gath auto arrives. Shame he scatters 11" directly away from Andy's army as does Epidemus. Oh dear oh dear. My prince finally managed to get through the invincible pred's armour and chalks up another KP. Am 1 behind now, time to send the PB's into some sternguard.....
.... now if at this point i realise what a fool i am. Those sternguard are veteran marines, thats 2 attacks each, oh and Pedro gives them +1 attack for being in 12". Oh and they have a fist and i am WS3. Yeah i lost that combat quite badly to say the least.

So 1 Nil behind, not good at all but wait a minute we have a turn 6, maybe just maybe...

Andy charges EVERYTHING into the last 3 PB's in combat to make sure they die and in the process leaves his units all clumped up and close to Ku'Gath. Oh goody this is going to be good

So cue Ku'Gath firing breath of chaos hitting 9 marines and his pie plate covering another 8!

Cue me only scoring 3 wounds out of 17 on a 4+ with no save!

Balls

Oh and then Big K only kills 1 marine whilst losing 2 wounds in combat.

Double balls!!!

Well at least one dice roll went my way and the game ended before i could be shamed by loosing the big man. Overall the game was very tough for me and despite some lucky breaks i just couldn't get into it with my reserve rolls being so poor. Andy played it spot on and got the win he deserved.

Lessons learnt:

1. don't be so smug and confident going into a game - you always loose for being a smug and confident git!
2. its daemons, you are going to get shafted by reserve rolls. Get over it, burn the scatter dice and get a new one!
3. don't forget that pedro + sternguard is far better than WS3 1 attack PB's.

So after eating some humble pie and drinking a couple of consolation beers it was time to move onto game 3.

My opponent was another of the Northern Warlords; Mike(?) with his Tau whilst the mission was Capture the Flag and the set up was Table Quarters.

Mikes list was;

Crisis Commander with Plasma
+ 2 Body guards with plasma and some shield drones.
3 Crisis suits with Missile Pods
4 Stealth Suits
8 Firewarriors
8 Firewwarriors in Devilfish
8 Pathfinders in Devilfish
Hammerhead
2 Broadsides

Once again i won the roll and allowed Mike to pick the corner and go 1st; he opted to take one with 2 large ruins in it obviously looking for a defensive castle to mount his attack from whilst the stealthes and kroot outflanked in a hope to come onto my objective late in the game. My objective went down in a tiny ruin in the middle of my quarter and the game was on.

So after mike moved his skimmers around a little it was my turn; Oh look i just rolled another 2 and the wrong wave showed up. Oh look the flamers scattered massively onto the enemy and went back in reserve..... My 2 units of PB's landed pretty much on the extreme right of the board in front of his broadsides and pathfinders whilst the fiends managed (for once) to land were i wanted them right behind the smelly daemons. A few run moves towards the tau and i was done.

Mike jostled his tanks and suits into position to get the best lines of fire and began shooting by pointing his pathfinders markerlights at my front PB unit, the gods were obviously smiling on me as only a single marker light hit - WHOOT! Mike promptly used this to boost the BS of his commanders unit and together with the majority of his army levelled all their guns at the same PB unit. Once the smoke cleared there were still 2/7 standing after some audacious saves. My luck though didn't hold as well when his hammerhead and SMS from the devilfishes chalked up 6 wounds on the fiends leaving my with only 2 of the spiders left.

My turn 2 and almost true to form my 2nd Wave arrives, this time Ku'Gath decided not to join the party straight away whilst my flamers once again scattered miles and had to roll on the mishap table (this time clipping some PB's), Thankfully once again the went back in reserve for later - phew. My 2 princes landed on the other side of a small shrubbery from the Tau commander whilst Epidemus in a true show of bravery landed next to my objective securing it for later. My princes opened up with their laser eyes killing off both shield drones in the commanders unit. My large unit of PB's shuffled a whopping 1" in the movement phase and another whole 1" in the run phase - obviously raring to go there lads! Thankfully my other units were much speedier with the fiends getting a 6 on thier fleet and charging the commander + chums whilst the 2 PB's from the 1st unit looked for revenge charging both the pathfinders and broadsides. Combat went all my way; 1 of the PB's fell to a broadside but his comrade killed 2 pathfinders, winning combat, breaking the boardsides whilst the finders were run down by him; nice. In the centre of Mikes army the Fiends brutalised the Tau commander and his bodyguards scoring no less than 6 rending wounds from 18 attacks! Only the commander himself was left on 1 wound. To make matters worse for the Tau the Commander passed his LD test on a double 1, holding the fiends in combat and preventing any retaliatory shooting from the rest of the army - WIN!

The Tau responding to this mauling by chucking all they could into the 2 princes and chalked up 1 of the big beasties for their trouble, but still there was no sign of the outflanking units and the broadsides kept running straight off the board!. Things weren't looking good for the Tau and the turn quickly moved to combat were the 2 fiends shredded the commander to pieces with a further flurry of rending hits.

My 3rd turn saw Ku'Gath arrive into play directly in front of the pathfinders (empty) devilfish then immobilising it with his breath of chaos. The Flamers tried to join the party for the 3rd time in the game and thankfully rolled a hit landing right beside the 2nd crisis suit unit, 3 breath templates and 9 hits later only the shas'ui was left - things just keep getting better and better My 2nd prince lept to the sky coming down infront of some rather squishy looking firewarriors who unsurprisingly got chopped up into little blue hunks of flesh. Finally to cap off the now superb turn for the Daemons my fiends sped round the back of the ruins rolling a 6" for thier fleet to engage the surviving shas'ui and once again a incomprependable flurry of sixes to wound saw him reduced ribbons.

Well things couldn't really have gotten any better could they?

Actually they could; Mike finally got both the stealth's and Kroot on the board. Bad news for him they both decided to come on his short edge and therefore removed the hope of them engaging Epidemus on my flag. At this point i was certain the game was in the bag and after the reinforcements only managed to kill 2/3 flamers i knew i was onto a winner.

From the point on the game was all in my hands and the final turns saw me take out the tau reinforcements whilst Ku'gath, the 2 fiends and the last prince chased and charged the last 2 tau skimmers bringing them both crashing to the ground for the game to end.

Another big 30-0 win to me and all i can say is that my bad luck from the previous game was repaid in spades with Mike being the unfortunate one who couldn't get anything past the dice.

Saturday night saw a very tired me and several other members of Flame On be all hardcore driving back to Manchester, waiting and hour for a Domino's pizza (we were collecting!) and then me falling asleep on a mates sofa. That's hardcore tourney players for you baby!

Suddenly it was Sunday morning and after another short commute back over to the land of the scousers and a quick YAAARRRR! for Flame On leading the overall club challenge shield by 0.3 points it was time for the penultimate game vs Chris from RGMB and his very nippy looking White Scars:

Khan
3x 5 bikes with fist, melta, flamer and HB attack bike
2x 10 strong Tac squads with ML's, Flamers and fist in Rhino
3 MM Attack Bikes
Typhoon

The mission to start Sunday off was multiple objectives and pitched battle though this was all made totally irrelevant when Chris informed me his WHOLE army was outflanking and the lone typhoon was going into reserve and that i was going first.

Now i need to point out before we go any further that as Chris had a biker based army i employed the classic dirty trick and placed 2/5 objectives on the top floor of the ruined buildings that made up the terrain on our board therefore denying the majority of Chris' army the chance to claim them. Evil yes i know.

Now with the entirety of the White Scars off board low and behold i should FINALLY roll a 3+ and get the right wave down! by the start of Chris' 2nd turn my entire army had arrived and Ku'Gath had summoned 2 Nurgling bases. These had scuttled off to contest some objectives in ruins whilst Epi and his chums took the centre objective atop a building and the 2 other PB units shuffled towards other "strategically placed" high up objectives.

Chris then began what was to be a true tale of woe with his reserve/outflank rolls with only khan and 2 bike squads arriving, both on the same flank away from the majority of my army. His 2 bike squads poured some fire into a PB unit atop a building/objective but due to cover and FnP no casualties were taken. Khan then speed Moondraken 6" forwards in the shooting phase and assaulted my 2nd PB unit but after fluffing his to hit rolls only 2 PB's fell over whilst Khan himself suffered 2 wounds in return! Thinking better of it he hit and run'd out of combat and hide behind the ruins.

Turn 3, Ku'Gath summoned another Nurgling base which then landed next to another objective. Next up the "victorious" PB's shuffled into some ruins claiming a 3rd objective for me, at this point i had 3 objectives and contested the other 2 with Nurgling bases. Next up my heavy hitters moved forward in the forms of my princes and fiends. together with Ku'Gath the 2 princes saw one of the bike squads blown away whilst the fiends raced into combat and rending the hell out of the marine bikes leaving only the serg and attack bike remaining.

Chris once again got shafted by his reserve/outflank rolls with only his MM attackbikes and Typhoon arriving this turn on the opposite board edge from the action, Ku'Gath got another nurgling base. They sped around some ruins and chucked a few shots into Epi's unit but once again the cover denied any kills. The turn moved onto combat and the fiends quickly saw of the last 2 bikers with their nasty nasty rending claws. Whilst Khan tries his luck again vs the PB's this time faring much better killing 3 and winning combat.

Turn 4 and i sent 1 prince after Khan whilst the 2nd consolidated back towards the massive castle of Daemon in the centre board with big K squeezing out yet more nurglings onto an objective. With little else to do the prince charged and unsurprisingly killed khan in short order.

Finally the white scars arrive from reserve with both rhino units and final bike squad coming on the same flank as the typhoon and attack bikes. Chris manoeuvred forwards and blasted 2 of the nurgling bases out of cover whilst his MM bikes turbo'd up his long edge ready to cook the inevitable Daemonic counter attack.

I didn't want to disappoint and after summoning more nurglings to the party Ku'Gath and the 2nd Prince stomped out of cover and towards the middle of the White Scar army whilst the flamers hopped forwards to find themselves in range of the 3rd bike unit. My shooting was so, so until the flamers did their thing killing 5 of the bikes and leaving only the serg standing.

Chris' Turn 5 and it was make or break time; the surviving serg charged the flamers, the attack bikes and typhoon lined up vs the daemon prince and the rhino units disembarked onto 2 objectives cleansing the nurglings from them whilst the rhinos tried to block Ku'Gath from them. Chris' shooting was to be another white wash and after sending 3 MM shots and 2 Krak Missiles into the Prince he was still standing after only loosing 1 wound! Combat saw the bike serg get slapped down by the 3 flamers before his fist could swing! Ouch!

Not good at all for the scars.

the way things stood i had 3 objectives to 2 and so Chris really needed an extra turn and some major luck to get the game back.

Lady luck smiled on him by granting the 6th turn. That though was as far as fate wanted to help the White Scars; Ku'Gath rolled triple 6 for his move and then charge crashing straight into one of the tactical squads whilst both princes flapped towards the attack bikes and even Epidemus came out charging the 2nd tactical squad. The Princes daemonic gazed and then charged the MM bikes, killing them all. Ku'gath charged and slapped down half the tactical squad whilst Epidemus boosted by all the other carnage held the entire tac squad in place suffering only a single wound.

The white scars 6th turn was pretty academic, both rhinos moving towards my central ruin to try and contest the objective and the typhoon zooming round chucking a piar of kraks off at the Price but only causing a single wound. Combat saw more marines fall to Big K and Epidemus killed another in his combat without taking a single wound.

I was still leading and things were bleak for Chris, they became even bleaker with us getting a 7th turn which saw Ku'gath kill the last of the tactical marines, the fiends charging a killing one rhino, once prince shooting the typhoon and immobilising it, the second then charged into support Epidemus and with the tally been on 20 the marines were cut to ribbons.

All Chris was left with was a single Rhino and immobile typhoon and the game was mine

All that can be said about that game was, personally, Chris made the massive mistake of outflanking against the daemons. IMO had he deployed en mass then his mobility and fire power would have cause me real problems. As it were he put his faith in getting the right reserve/outflank rolls and it failed.

Another 30-0 to me putting me on 3 massacres. With only Andrew Taylor on 4 wins things were looking good for a chance at some silverware going into the final round.

Swiftly moving onto the final round and i was drawn against Myles Davis for the last battle.

Those who remember my battle report from the final will recall i suffered a hefty defeat in the final game to Myles's Space Marines so i readily accepted the chance for a little revenge.

The last mission was to be kill points with a Dawn of War set up.

Myles's army was:

Lysander
+ 5 Assault Terminators
+ Redeemer
Dread
+ Pod
5 Terminators with Cyclone
10 Tactical Marines with Fist and Melta/Lascannon
10 Tactical Marines with Plasma/Plasma Cannon
2 Attack bikes (1 MM, 1 HB)

So once again i am going to have to take down the 650pt hammer that is lysander, assault terms and a redeemer with no ranged anti tank whatsoever! Its gonna be a challenge to say the least!

I won the choice to go 1st and as ever my generosity new no bounds and i gave Myles the 1st turn. He had deployed his 2 tactical squads on the extreme left of the board, 1 squad in a ruin half way up the board and the second in a big wood about 6" of his long edge. The "Brick'o'Doom" chugged up on the left board edge with the 5 shooty terminators coming on the right side of the same wood. Finally the pod landed to the right of the woods with the attack bikes gliding in behind to get some cover against any of my shooting.

My turn and the gods decided that getting the preferred wave once was enough for me and for the 4th time in 5 games i rolled a 2 Things got even more exciting when my Fiends scattered miles and landed on some of Myles's marines. He got to place them were he wanted and went for a quick KP placing them right in the middle of his whole army - GULP. Next up both my PB units landed in front of the ruin occupied by the forward tactical squad and shuffled towards the marines. Finally i decided to go balls out with my flamers and land them in front of the 2nd tactical squad to get a quick KP and reduce the shots going on the Fiends. They scattered but fortune favours the brave and they ended up right in front of the nice conga line of shooty terminators, 3 breath templates later and only the serg was alive.

With a slight look of shock and disgust at my flamers luck Myles went all out to get some KP's before my big hitters arrived. A ton of firepower from both tactical squads and the redeemer saw the fiends fall thick and fast till only a single plague spider remained. The assault phase began with Lysander and his chums charging the last fiend but before it could be bullied to death it managed to sneak a cheeky pair of wounds past Lysanders storm shield. Next up the terminator serg smashed into the flamers looking for revenge but all his attacks bounced off thier cheeky 4+ saves whilst the Dread got stuck in a little stream, rolling a double 1 for its terrain and failed to help the sergeant out. Excellent!

Well i may as well finish the tourney off as i started and look my entire 2nd wave arrived on turn 2. Epidemus and both princes landed behind the 2 original PB units whilst big K slammed into existence behind the struggling dread. Shooting saw a couple of tactical marines fall to the double daemonic gaze and 2 Terminators dissolved when the unit'o'doom got hit by Ku'Gath's pie plate. Assault saw the 2 small PB units charge the tactical marines but the power armour held and i lost 5 PB's from one unit - ouch! Next up was the flamers vs Terminator serg which once again saw the mighty 4+ invulnerable of the magic mushrooms hold them together. Good, good.

Turn 3 and Myles turbo's his 2 attack bikes away from my army looking to conserve KP's, in doing so they had to cross a river and each took a wound from the dangerous terrain Next up Lysander and his home boys jumped back in the redeemer which rolled forward and fired his assault cannon against a Prince to no effect. The princes armour didn't hold much longer as the combined fire of 10 tactical marines saw it stripped down to 1 wound with a cheeky stormbolter shell from the drop pod slaying it - GHAH! Why do i keep loosing Princes to bolter fire? Much to Myles's relief the dread finally managed to cross the small stream into combat though all its and the sergeants attacks once again bounced of the flamers who then had the audacity to slay the terminator in return.

I then sent my last prince flying towards the drop pod looking for some quick revenge and points whilst Ku'Gath charged the dread and Epidemus & 10 PB's shuffled in to support thier battered brothers. Combat went all my way; the prince smashed the pod to pieces, the extra attacks from Epidemus and his bodyguard tipped the balance and the tactical marines were slain and to finish the round Ku'Gath tapped the Dread on its shoulder and then once it had the robots attention, clove it in two. Not everything went my may though and the resultant explosion proved to be the undoing of the flamers who vanished back into the warp

Turn 4 and despite my losses i was storming into the lead, Myles knew this and so it was time for his big boys to join the part again. The Redeemer rolled forwards knocking a wound of Ku'Gath, the tactical marines doing likewise with some plasma just before Lysander and his 3 remaining terminators charged into the big man. Ku'gath (for once) swung 1st against Lysander and brought the valiant commander down to his last wound (after me being shocked at the knowledge that Lysander had 4 wounds not 3). The hammers started to fall but thanks to some poor rolling on Myles's part Ku'gath only sustained 2 wounds and stayed in the fight.

Ok it was time to reinforce Ku'gath and i ploughed and Epidemus and his retunie into the assault terminators, the last Daemon Prince flapped towards the tactical marines but tripped over a twig before he could charge. But to make things up the remains of the smaller PB units zoomed into combat with the attackbikes who fell to the plagueswords. In the main fight the massed poisoned attacks proved too much for the assault marines who both went down under the rusted blades. Ku'Gath swung, caused 4 wounds but they were all saved by Lysanders shield. Lysander retaliated and knocked Ku'Gath down to his final wound. Things were looking tense, would Ku'Gath finally be killed this weekend?

Turn 5 and the Redeemer moves up in front of the Daemon prince but all its fire power failed to cause any wounds. Seeing this the tactical marines decide Epidemus is an easier target and rush into engage him, thankfully my tally was past 15 and the 3+ FnP kept the Tallyman alive on 1 wound, in return i managed to kill enough tactical marines to bring the tally up to the magic 20 just in time for the final turn All eyes then turned towards Lysander and Ku'Gath, obviously the champs were getting tired as we each only managed to land a single hit which both bounced of our invulnerable saves.

I closed the noose on the Blood Wolves by charging the prince into combat with the last tactical marines, together with the power weapon always wound on a 2+ plaguebearers there was nothing left of the last tactical squad. Ku'Gath then hefted his mighty blade but all 5 wounds (yes i got 5 hits and 5 wounds) bounced of that confounded storm shield Lysander swung his big hammer round and smashed 2 wounding hits into the Plague Father but luck was with me also and both bounced off his invulnerable save - phew!

We rolled to see if the prize right would continue but it wasn't to be and the game ended with both our champs on their final wound.

Revenge was mine! Another fantastic game vs Myles and once again a top way to end a tournament.

The results came in and i finished in 3rd place - AWESOME!

All that's left to say is thanks again to 5 top opponents for 5 great games and hello to everyone i chatted to over the weekend.

Next challenge for the Daemons will be Destruction Derby in July - lets see if i can get my own stuff painted for this one.
